Background / History
Little Black traveled with Kaim while still an Eevee and knew Steven during that period. Although not a picky eater, Little Black visibly reacted to disappointing food, prompting Kaim to study cooking so he could prepare better meals during their travels 228.
By the Alto Mare visit, Little Black was an active member of Kaim’s battling team. Later, Kaim identified Little Black as his strongest Pokémon and ace. Cynthia also borrowed Little Black for her Sinnoh title match, valuing the combination of defensive support, Dark typing, and the ability to create attacking openings 9 227 244.
Personality
Little Black is friendly, affectionate, and openly demanding of attention. Favorite places include Kaim’s lap, his head, and the space between Kaim and Cynthia when they sleep. Neglect can lead to sulking, and Little Black often asks to be picked up or petted 42 124 152 231 241.
That attachment is particularly strong toward Kaim and Cynthia. Little Black refused to leave Kaim’s bedside during his illness, continued watching over him until he recovered, and became visibly sleep-deprived. Cynthia persuaded Little Black to eat by explaining that they needed to care for Kaim together 182 207 208 209.
In battle, Little Black is resilient, deceptive, and willing to act independently. Feigned injury repeatedly creates openings for counterattacks. Outside battle, the same confidence appears as uninhibited affection toward Glacia, whose embarrassed reactions do not discourage Little Black 34 50 78 237 244.
Little Black enjoys battling but often yields opportunities to the more battle-hungry Blaziken and Lucario 152.
Abilities & Skills
Defensive Fighting
Little Black specializes in durability rather than raw firepower, combining natural toughness with precise movement and damage reduction 50 190 193.
- Curse increases physical strength and defense at the cost of speed. Little Black uses repeated boosts to endure powerful physical attackers 34 50 78.
- Parrying and impact control reduce damage through body shifts, angled tail blocks, and narrowly avoided direct hits 34 41 50.
- Protect can completely block attacks or be deployed partially to soften blows that cannot be avoided 193 219 243.
- Endure allows Little Black to survive Lucario’s Close Combat when ordinary defensive techniques are insufficient 50.
- Limits: Low speed, accumulated injuries, and powerful Fighting-type attacks can overwhelm this defensive approach 41 49 193 244.
Dark-Type Offense and Counterattacks
Little Black’s main weapons include Snarl, Foul Play, Whirlwind, and Night Slash, supplemented by Confusion and Shadow Ball. Offensive power is comparatively modest because training prioritizes durability 190.
- Foul Play exploits the opponent’s Attack rather than Little Black’s own, making it especially effective against heavily strengthened enemies 244 271.
- Feint and Sucker Punch capitalize on an opponent’s commitment to an attack or mistaken belief that Little Black is incapacitated 34 50 78 84.
- Dark Pulse can briefly obscure an opponent’s vision, allowing Little Black to reposition for an unexpected overhead attack 244.
- Snarl lowers opposing Special Attack. Three reductions against Empoleon help Blaziken survive and overcome Hydro Pump 193.
- Limits: Soundproof nullifies the sound-based attack used against Tyrantrum; Fighting-type opponents also create difficult matchups 190 193 244.
Team Support and Recovery
Little Black can protect teammates, weaken opponents, and transfer advantages between Pokémon 34 220 244.
- Reflect and Light Screen reduce physical and special damage, respectively. Cynthia uses Little Black to establish these defenses during her title match 243.
- Baby-Doll Eyes lowers Attack, helping Little Black withstand Mega Metagross’s Hammer Arm and Gallade’s Leaf Blade 227 244.
- Baton Pass receives Blaziken’s Swords Dance boost in one battle and later transfers accumulated attacking power back to Blaziken against Darkrai 34 220.
- Guard Swap contributes to the defeat of Steven’s Boss Aggron; Little Black subsequently withstands Mega Metagross’s attacks with Aggron’s physical defenses 227.
- Wish provides delayed healing for an allied Pokémon on the field, including Little Black 193.
- Moonlight heals Little Black, Morpeko, and Bachinki during the Nightglow Maze battle 271.
Synchronize and Psychic Immunity
- Synchronize passes paralysis to Sumo’s Lucario. The condition hampers the mobile Lucario more severely than the already slow Little Black 50.
- Dark typing makes directly applied Psychic-type attacks ineffective, allowing Little Black to enter safely against Musharna’s Confusion 34.
- Limit: Psychic immunity does not stop physical objects propelled by telekinesis. Bronzong exploits this by throwing stones that cling to Little Black and restrict movement 243.
Emotion Sensing
Little Black spreads a faint, diluted Dark-type aura to probe nearby emotions and malice 231.
- Detects an unseen visitor outside a room and recognizes a feeling of duty 231.
- Practices during spare moments to improve control 231.
- Initially has limited range and duration, reads emotions only roughly, and cannot determine a visitor’s identity or purpose 231.
Former Eevee Adaptability
- As Eevee, Little Black used Mimic to support a varied fighting style 271.
- Evolution fixes Little Black’s type as Dark, improving specialization but making some previously mimicked movements impossible to complete 271.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Moon Ball — Little Black personally chooses the pale blue-and-black ball with a crescent moon design. Kaim agrees to replace the existing ball with it 171 172.
- Leftovers — Gradually restores stamina during the Tyrantrum battle, though its recovery is too slow to replace Wish as protection against heavy damage 193.
Relationships
- Kaim — Trainer and closest companion. Little Black regards him as a beloved trainer, fights to answer his expectations, and watches over him during illness 50 207 208 209.
- Cynthia — The first person besides Kaim to whom Little Black becomes deeply attached. She provides affection and care, and later commands Little Black in her title defense 18 182 244.
- Glacia — Cynthia’s male Glaceon and Little Black’s affectionate companion. They cooperate in a tag battle; Little Black later kisses and nuzzles him, prompting discussion of possible offspring 84 237.
- Blaziken — Teammate whose Endure inspires Little Black. They exchange boosts through Baton Pass and defend Kaim together against Darkrai 34 50 219 220.
- Steven — Knows Little Black from the Eevee period and can recognize reactions to food. Later acknowledges Little Black as Kaim’s ace before their battle 227 228.

| Battle with Iris | Pressures Haxorus through evasive counters and attacks on its burned tail. Kaim’s hesitation creates the opening for Little Black’s defeat, exposing his lack of self-trust 41. |
| Victory over Sumo | Defeats Lucario but collapses afterward. Staraptor wins the remaining battle, earning Kaim the match 50. |
| Battle with Ishana | Endures Oranguru’s boosted attacks and defeats it with Foul Play, rendered as “Kasama” in the passage 78. |

| Cynthia’s Sinnoh title defense | Establishes defensive screens and weakens opponents. Against Gallade, independently substitutes Iron Tail for Cynthia’s ordered Shadow Ball, striking its face to rattle its brain and create the conditions for Mega Lucario’s victory 243 244. |
| Nightglow Maze | Evolves from Eevee, sustains the allied front line with Moonlight, and defeats the Polteageist leader with Foul Play, causing the remaining enemies to flee 271. |
Trivia
- Cynthia borrows Little Black not only for tactical reasons, but also to fight alongside Kaim symbolically and encourage him to recognize his own potential 244.
- Little Black’s interest in the moon includes asking Kaim to watch it together. Cynthia also considers the Moon Ball fitting for a Pokémon that symbolizes the moon 34 172.
- Kogomi owns a separate Umbreon also called Little Black. The opponent using Confusion and Rest in those battles is not Kaim’s partner 89 90 91.
- The supplied chapters depict Little Black as Umbreon well before the evolution scene presented in Chapter 271; the context does not explain that ordering 97 193 271.
