Cynthia and Dawn faced each other in the Sinnoh League final, where their Pokémon battled until Dawn’s Empoleon and Cynthia’s Garchomp remained. With both Pokémon weakened, Garchomp blinded Empoleon with Sand Attack, leaving the match poised for a decisive exchange.
Cynthia defeated Hikari to defend her Champion title, then confessed her love to Kaim, who returned her feelings and promised to stay by her side. They traveled to Caitlin’s villa in Shallow Wave Town, where Cynthia reunited with Caitlin.
Cynthia and Kaim visited Caitlin at her villa in Unova, where they revealed that they were dating and reassured her about their relationship. After Caitlin congratulated them, she suggested a beach walk, and Kaim prepared lunch for them and their Pokémon.
Kaim spent a day at a secluded beach with Cynthia and Caitlin, discussed expanding his Pokémon team, and admitted he wanted a balanced team partly so Cynthia could teach him. When they returned to the villa, they found Shikimi and the young Isshu Champion Iris waiting there.
Kaim spent the evening barbecuing with Cynthia and their friends, then discussed his Pokémon team and future with Cynthia on a moonlit beach. After learning about the Abyssal Ruins, they planned to explore them together the next day and fell asleep side by side.
Cynthia told Caitlin, Iris, and Shikimi how Kaim’s sincerity and perseverance had made her fall in love with him, then spent the night with him at Cattleya Villa. The next morning, Cynthia and Kaim began their investigation of the Abyssal Ruins, entering the underwater maze as its exploration period started.
Cynthia and Kaim explored deeper levels of the Underwater Ruins, discovered a chamber filled with hieroglyph-covered stones, and recovered a crown that supported the records of an ancient king. After leaving the crown at the Pokémon Center for safekeeping, they returned to the villa, where Kaim admitted that being Cynthia’s boyfriend could be difficult.
Kaim and Cynthia grew closer during a beach outing with Iris, Caitlin, and Shikimi, while Cynthia encouraged Kaim to find the strength he needed to stand beside her. The group went diving together, and Cynthia surfaced after marveling at the ocean and its Pokémon.
Kaim and his companions enjoyed a swim before Caitlin challenged him to prove he was ready to train Metagross. Caitlin won their battle, and after the group returned to the Villa, Little Black asked Kaim to go outside and look at the moon.
Kaim met a mysterious young Trainer on the beach, then reassured Cynthia with a hug before returning to the villa with her. The next day, the group visited Nimbasa City, where Caitlin led Kaim and Cynthia toward clothing shops while Iris and Shimi went to the amusement park.
Caitlin and Cynthia took Kaim shopping, first choosing clothes for Caitlin and then dressing Kaim in new outfits until he bought several. After meeting Iris and Shikimi, the group went to lunch and discussed where to spend the afternoon.
Cynthia and Kaim spent a date shopping together, choosing matching hats and exchanging accessories inspired by Unova’s legends. They left the shops with a photo together and plans to visit Dragonspiral Tower after spending a week in the city.
Cynthia enjoyed her time with Kaim in the mall until two men harassed her, and Kaim drove them off by defeating their Pokémon. Later, Cynthia agreed to model in a Nimbasa Gym show, while Kaim learned more about Nessa and the tournament where she had met Shinren.
Kaim helped prepare for the fashion show while Cynthia, Iris, Chamomile, and Nessa rehearsed and performed. Cynthia enjoyed her first show, shared a tender moment with Kaim on the ride back, and the chapter ended with Kaim waking early while Cynthia and Umbreon still slept.
Kaim trained with Blaziken and Lucario, then joined Iris in a battle that exposed his hesitation and the gap between his Pokémon and her Haxorus. After Blaziken and Staraptor fell, Lucario faced Haxorus’s rampaging Outrage and was struck by its returning axe.
Kaim lost to Iris when his hesitation let Haxorus defeat Little Black, and Iris and Cynthia explained that he needed to trust his own decisions. Kaim resolved to change and continue pursuing a victory over Sumo.
Kaim discussed his lack of confidence with Caitlin and Cynthia, who encouraged him to value his efforts and trust himself as his Pokémon trusted him. After Kaim fell asleep drunk, Cochran arrived with news that Shaka wanted to visit the Dragonport Immortal Tower.
Cynthia and Kaim visited Dragonspiral Tower with Alice and met N, who revealed that he had once been Team Plasma’s king. Kaim accepted that N had acted out of concern for Pokémon and continued exploring the tower with him.
Cynthia, Kaim, and N explored the Dragonport Immortal Tower and discussed how its spiral structure might relate to Zekrom and Reshiram. N admired the trust between Cynthia and Kaim as they reached the tower’s ruined summit.
At Dragonspiral Tower, N introduced Kaim and Cynthia to his friend Zekrom and showed them the Isshu Region from the sky. After sharing lunch, N noticed Kaim's unease and asked about his lack of confidence in battle, prompting Kaim to explain how past failures had made him doubt himself.
Kaim took N’s advice to trust the people who believed in him and accepted N’s Zweilous as his Pokémon. After returning to Saba Town, he and Cynthia encountered Toya searching for N, then departed for Sinnoh with a renewed resolve to overcome his doubts.
Kaim defeated Cynthia’s Lucario and learned that he had reached Gym Leader level by trusting his own battle style. He went to Veilstone Gym the next day, where he prepared to battle challengers before facing Sumo, his longtime rival.
Kaim battled Gym Leader Sumo, showing a newfound confidence and defeating her Hawkazaru with Blaziken through a strategy built around Endure and Reversal. He then sent Lucario against Toxicroak, and the battle continued with Kaim setting up an Earthquake counter.
Lucario and Toxicroak knocked each other out, leaving Kaim to battle Sumo with Staraptor and Kuroki. Kaim’s strategic switches put Sumo under pressure, but the fight between Lucario and Kuroki ended with both Pokémon suddenly paralyzed.
Kaim defeated Sumo in a hard-fought Gym battle, and Sumo asked him to take over as the Veilstone Gym’s substitute Leader while she studied abroad. Returning home, Kaim told Cynthia that it was the first time he had ever felt he had truly won, and the first time in his twenty-three years that he felt victory.
