This notebook closely resembled Leymano's Travel Notes, which Fors later obtained in the original story. It corresponded to the ability of a Sequence 6 Scribe of the Apprentice Pathway and was extremely practical at low and mid Sequences, remaining useful even at high Sequences.
Surprise crossed her face. "You're going to give it back to me?"
"Of course..."
Edward put the notebook away again. "...not. Unless you're willing to pay an appropriate price to redeem it."
"..."
"What's this Beyonder item's name?"
"I don't know either."
"After you drove me into a frenzy just now, you probably could have taken me down if you'd followed up with a few powerful attacks. Why did you switch to weaker electric shocks, freezing, and flashes of light?"
She pursed her lips and said insincerely, "I only wanted to capture you, not kill you..."
"I see."
Edward smiled. "You were in a fight not long ago, so you'd already used up all the abilities you recorded before. Since you're still being hunted, you haven't had time to replenish them. Is that right?"
Christine's pupils contracted.
"How did you know?"
Of course... it was because I used Legilimency.
Edward wearily rubbed his temples. He had only just managed to pry into Christine's memories by both guiding her thoughts and distracting her. Unfortunately, he could only glimpse a few of the memories she was currently thinking about. Using Legilimency on Beyonders really was much harder, and the drain was enormous.
Edward smiled and said, "I was guessing before. Now I'm sure."
Her expression froze.
"Do you know the formulas for Sequence 6 and above of the Apprentice Pathway?"
"No."
"Do you know where I can find those formulas?"
"No!"
"Do you really not know the formulas above Sequence 6?"
She gritted her teeth and denied it again. "No."
Tsk. Judging by what I saw through Legilimency, she really doesn't know?
Is her standing in the Abraham Family too low, or is she too young to be allowed access to higher-Sequence formulas?
"I'm guessing that when members of your family advance, they simply drink a potion that's already been prepared. Is that right?"
"You guessed wrong!"
She snapped out those words, turned around, and left through the wall.
"I hope I really can make contact with the Abraham Family through her."
Edward wasn't worried that she would leave and never return. She had clearly come looking for him tonight because she wanted something else. As long as she wanted something, she would definitely return.
But what exactly did she want?
Whatever the case, bringing him such a useful Sealed Artifact on her very first visit certainly qualified her as a bearer of good fortune.
Five stars!
Let's see what recorded abilities are left.
When Klein arrived at the Blackthorn Security Company early the next morning, he found everyone discussing something.
"What happened?"
He asked as he accepted the coffee Rozanne had brewed for everyone.
"I don't know either. I hope nothing bad happens."
Rozanne looked worried.
Leonard lounged in a chair with his legs propped casually on the desk. "Beyonders fought over on Tulip Street last night. Although they didn't cause any serious damage, quite a few people were startled awake."
"Tulip Street?"
Klein paused in surprise. That wasn't far from where he was living now.
"The captain will probably send someone over there in a bit. Let's wait."
"Right. How has Old Neil been these past few days?"
After receiving the anonymous letter last time, Klein had immediately gone to the captain. They had rushed to Old Neil's home, brought him back after finding signs that he was losing control, and confined him behind Chanis Gate.
But that only treated the symptoms, not the cause. Chanis Gate could stop Old Neil from losing control any further, but it couldn't restore him to normal. More importantly, resurrecting his beloved was an obsession Old Neil couldn't abandon. In other words, he could only spend the rest of his life there.
Still, as long as he was alive, there was hope.
Naturally, they had performed divination on the letter afterward. Unfortunately, it bore no lingering traces, so even above the gray fog, Klein had been unable to divine any useful information.
Before long, Captain Dunn Smith emerged from his office. "Klein, Leonard, go take a look at the Beyonder incident on Tulip Street."
"All right."
The two turned to leave.
"Wait."
Dunn took out a register and handed it over. "This contains information on all the residents of Tulip Street. Take it with you."
Klein and Leonard changed into police uniforms and boarded a public carriage heading to Tulip Street. Since they were its only passengers for the moment, Klein leafed through the register as he asked:
"Leonard, Beyonders fighting in the street like this can't be very common, right?"
"Not necessarily. Think about it. If you were a poor wretch who was always being bullied, then became a Beyonder through some stroke of luck and gained decent fighting abilities, would you carefully hide yourself, or would you take revenge on the people who used to bully you?"
Klein considered it carefully for a while. "Hide myself."
"..."
"Actually, your hypothetical doesn't hold up. How could an ordinary person become a Beyonder through some stroke of luck? First, they'd need a formula. Then they'd have to gather the ingredients and brew a potion. After drinking it, they'd also have to avoid losing control." Klein counted off the points on his fingers as he analyzed them for Leonard.
Leonard smiled and patted him on the shoulder. "Young man, you still have a lot to learn."
Klein rolled his eyes and lowered his head to the register again. His finger suddenly stopped on the name of a resident who had recently moved to Tulip Street.
"Edward?"
Leonard noticed his brief reaction. "What's wrong?"
Klein smiled and pointed at the name in the register.
"Oh, I saw a familiar name, but he should be in Backlund. It must be someone with the same name. Still, since I've spotted it, let's start with him."
"Fine by me."
He shrugged. "Actually, I think we're just going through the motions. I don't believe last night's Beyonders would be stupid enough to stay on Tulip Street." He paused. "Besides, they might not have lived there in the first place."
The public carriage continued on its way, gradually picking up passengers. Conversation was no longer as convenient as it had been at the start, so one of them simply closed his eyes to rest while the other stared blankly out the window.
Twenty minutes later, they got off at Tulip Street.
Leonard took a deep breath of the flowers' fragrance, looking positively overflowing with romantic inspiration. "I like this street. A scene like this deserves a poem."
Klein folded his arms and quietly watched his performance.
A minute later, Leonard stepped forward. "Next time."
Klein pressed a hand to his forehead and said helplessly, "I really shouldn't have expected anything from you."
"How is that my fault?"
Leonard declared with complete confidence, "Over a hundred years ago, Emperor Roselle already wrote the finest poetry in the world. He's the one who left us later generations no chance."
Klein immediately shared his sentiment. "You're right!"
As they joked, the two arrived at 5 Tulip Street. Leonard checked the register again. "5 Tulip Street. Yes, this is it."
He strode forward and knocked on the door.
A moment later, the door clicked open, but no one appeared.
Leonard immediately took a step back and exchanged a quick glance with Klein. Both drew their revolvers and positioned themselves on either side of the doorway.
Leonard counted with his fingers. "One, two..."
A little black cat walked out. She looked at the two of them in confusion. "Meow? ('?ω?`)?"
A voice immediately came from inside. "Lilith, who's here?"
As soon as Edward poked his head out, he saw two armed "door guardians" flanking the entrance. One of them was the familiar Mr. Fool.
Klein froze for a moment. It really is him.
"Gentlemen? Is there something you need from me? Huh? You're from the Divination Club... Mr. Moretti?!"
As he holstered his gun, Leonard said in surprise, "Klein, he really is the Edward you know?"
"Yes, that's... that's right. Mr. Edward previously came to the Divination Club to have me perform a divination."
Edward stepped forward and clasped Klein's hand, saying happily, "Thank you so much for last time. Thank you for divining the potion that suited me best."
"Uh, you're... welcome."
Leonard was even more surprised. "What? You asked Klein to divine which potion you should drink? You can do that?" Wait, why did this guy reveal that he's a Beyonder so easily? Is he a rookie?
"Why not?"
Edward smiled. "The Beyonder world is completely unknown to me. Rather than drinking some random potion based on instinct or luck, why wouldn't I find a reliable diviner to make the decision for me?"
Leonard rubbed his chin and nodded repeatedly. "That does sound pretty reasonable. What happened afterward? Did Klein's divination really work?"
"It did! The moment the potion reached my stomach, I nearly lost control."
Chapter 48: You even dared to deceive Mr. Fool!!
"??? Sorry, did I mishear you? You're saying that, with Klein's help, you nearly lost control?"
