Background / History
Life at Hogwarts
Lilith lives with Edward at Hogwarts and rarely leaves the Hufflepuff Common Room. Filch accuses her of tormenting Mrs. Norris, while Edward counters that Mrs. Norris previously tried to steal Lilith’s dried fish 4.
Edward introduces her to Audrey Hall over dinner. During Audrey’s subsequent Apparition lesson, Lilith remains curled against the arm and leg Audrey leaves behind through Splinching; realizing that Audrey’s body is missing frightens her into bristling and shrieking 6 8.
Before returning to Backlund, Edward entrusts Lilith to Professor McGonagall because he considers the other world too dangerous. When he returns, he finds Lilith fleeing with dried fish and McGonagall pursuing her in cat form. Lilith later bites Edward’s ear, prompting him to apologize for leaving her behind and appease her with dried chicken 9 30 31.
Crossing into Backlund
Despite Edward’s earlier precautions, Lilith secretly hides beneath a sofa inside his Leather Pouch and travels to the other world. She emerges in Audrey’s room, where she meets Susie. Initially frightened by the much larger dog, she cautiously accepts Susie’s gift of dried chicken 39.
Lilith chooses to leave with Edward rather than remain at Audrey’s home. At their rented apartment at 88 Minsk Street, she marks the unfamiliar surroundings, catches a mouse, and offers it to him. Her overnight activity and forceful morning wake-up leave Edward short of sleep 39.
Life in Tingen
Lilith accompanies Edward during his house search in Tingen and settles with him at 5 Tulip Street. Edward jokingly calls her the “lady of the house” as she plays with his hand 41.
She participates in his debut performance with the Blair Circus, climbing a rope into a suspended cloud of mist and subsequently reappearing on his shoulder. Later, when the Nighthawks attempt to arrest Edward, her sudden alertness helps warn him of danger, and he places her inside the Leather Pouch before the fighting begins 42 49.
Appearance
Lilith is small and is described as a little black cat in Tingen; Audrey and Melissa both remark on or enjoy her soft fur 32 46 50.
- Size: Small enough to rest on Edward’s shoulder or curl comfortably in someone’s arms 6 48.
- Tongue: Pink and barbed; she uses it to lick Edward awake 39 45.
- Expressive posture: Raises her tail while rubbing against people or furniture, bristles when frightened, and flattens herself deeper into Audrey’s arms to escape noise 6 32 39.
Personality
Lilith is affectionate with Edward, rubbing against him, purring in his arms, and playing with his hands. Her play can become rougher when frustrated: she gnaws his hand when denied a dried fish and bites his ear after their separation 6 9 31 41.
Food is an effective way to win her cooperation. Dried fish draws her into Edward’s arms, dried chicken ends her angry reunion with him, and Susie’s chicken offering persuades her to approach despite her fear. She also enjoys cheese, although its texture leaves her struggling to swallow it 6 31 39 48.
She is curious about unfamiliar territory but readily retreats from frightening situations. She hides under the sofa when a hand unexpectedly emerges from Edward’s Leather Pouch and initially keeps her distance from Susie. Loud pets at King’s Cross irritate her enough to cover her ears with her forepaws 32 39 42.
