Appearance
- Wears a coat and half-silk top hat and carries a cane when leaving the Divination Club 18.
- Changes into a police uniform for a Nighthawk investigation with Leonard 46.
- As Mr. Fool, appears as a mysterious figure concealed by thick gray fog at the head of Sefirah Castle’s bronze table 17.
Personality
Klein is cautious about supernatural danger. When Edward’s pathway readings produce suspiciously uniform results, he checks them again above the gray fog rather than trusting the initial answers. Before continuing, he also divines whether helping Edward would harm him 15.
His caution does not prevent him from helping others. He investigates Edward’s late-night plea despite uncertainty about the apparent loss of control, and later risks compromising his concealed identity to warn Edward during a Nighthawk investigation. His loyalty to the Tarot Club coexists with a genuine sense of belonging to the Tingen Nighthawks 17 47.
Klein maintains Mr. Fool’s composed, authoritative manner while privately reacting with anxiety, sarcasm, or embarrassment. Edward’s extravagant declarations of devotion repeatedly unsettle him, while requests for protection from the True Creator make the gulf between his apparent authority and actual Sequence painfully clear 28 47 50.
Money is a recurring weakness in his dignified presentation. Although he claims not to care greatly about fees, a prospective client’s one-pound tip persuades him to stay, and Edward’s additional ten-pound payment leaves him delighted. He also regrets having established prices too low to change comfortably 14 15 16.
After advancing to Clown, Klein declines his customary recovery leave and requests combat instruction. He wants to protect his teammates rather than remain a spectator when they are in danger 50.
Abilities & Skills
Divination
Klein practices several methods of divination, including astrolabe, crystal pendulum, tarot, and dream divination 15 30.
- Pathway assessment: Uses pendulum readings to evaluate Edward’s proposed potion pathways and ultimately recommends Apprentice 15 16.
- Risk assessment: Checks whether performing Edward’s divination or admitting him to the Tarot Club would be harmful 15 17.
- Tracing people: Uses Megose’s hair as a medium for dream divination 30.
- Interference detection: Recognizes manipulated results and repeats readings above the gray fog to investigate them 15 30.
- Limits: A suitable pathway does not guarantee safe potion consumption. Divining an exceptionally dangerous existence can also expose Klein to severe supernatural backlash 17 30.
Spirit Vision
Klein activates Spirit Vision by tapping his left teeth twice and uses it to inspect a person’s aura 15.
- Identifies Edward’s initial aura as healthy and free of sinister influences 15.
- Observes Edward’s health and emotional state after summoning him to Sefirah Castle 17.
- Detects signs of dishonesty in Edward’s account, though broad divination cannot establish which individual statement is false 17.
Sefirah Castle and the Gray Fog
Klein enters the palace above the gray fog by taking four counterclockwise steps and uses it as the Tarot Club’s meeting place 15 17.
- Establishes mystical connections through crimson stars and brings connected individuals into the palace 16 17.
- Controls attendance and can sever a member’s connection or remove them from future gatherings 17.
- Manifests parchment, tarot cards, and other materials used during meetings and divination 15 17.
- Receives pleas addressed to Mr. Fool through a three-part description and communicates with Edward through the gray fog 16 47.
- Conceals his appearance beneath fog while hosting meetings 17.
- Limit: The gray fog does not make dangerous divination harmless; the presence encountered while tracing Megose temporarily devastates the palace and leaves Klein in agony 30.
Clown Physique and Combat Development
The Clown potion strengthens Klein’s physique and grants multiple supernatural abilities, although their individual effects are not detailed in these passages 49.
- Gives him confidence that he can contribute directly in future battles 49.
- Supplements his completed mysticism lessons with planned morning combat training under Dunn’s approval 50.
Mystical Knowledge and Translation
- Reads Emperor Roselle’s diary pages and trades useful formulas for access to them 19.
- Supplies Derrick with the Sequence 9 Bard formula 19.
- Annotates the Telepathist formula’s ancient ingredient names with their modern equivalents for Audrey 28.
Equipment / Items
- Citrine crystal pendulum — A crystal pendant on a silver chain, carried around his wrist or inside his left cuff and used for divination 15 17.
- Revolver — Drawn alongside Leonard’s weapon when Edward’s front door opens without anyone immediately appearing 46.
- Nighthawk identification — Presented to Edward as proof of his Church of Evernight affiliation 47.
- Cane and top hat — Part of his ordinary attire at the Divination Club 15 18.
Relationships
- Edward / The Tower — Initially a divination client, later a Tarot Club member and Nighthawk teammate. Klein recommends Apprentice, answers his plea, admits him to the club, and warns him during the investigation into his identity. Edward already knows Klein is Mr. Fool, while Klein presents himself as the Fool’s Blessed 15 16 17 47 49 50.
- Audrey / Justice — Tarot Club member who provides Roselle diary pages. Klein facilitates her formula exchange, translates ingredients, and supplies his Blessed’s contact information when she offers an additional three hundred pounds 19 28.
- Alger / The Hanged Man — Tarot Club member participating in information exchanges and commissions; responds deferentially to Mr. Fool 19.
- Derrick / Sun — Tarot Club member to whom Klein supplies the Bard formula. Klein introduces him alongside Edward and helps facilitate his exchange with Audrey 18 19 28.
- Dunn Smith — Nighthawk captain. Klein reports investigative concerns to him and receives permission to begin additional combat training 47 50.
- Leonard Mitchell — Nighthawk colleague and investigative partner. Leonard insists on watching Edward himself because Klein, still a Sequence 9 Seer, has little actual combat ability 46 47.
- Crestet Cesimir — Senior Nighthawk deacon who assesses Klein for advancement. After Klein becomes a Clown, Crestet leaves an invitation for him to join the elite Red Gloves 47 49 50.
- Melissa Moretti — Younger sister. She criticizes apparent wasteful spending out of concern for their household, while Klein becomes wary of Edward’s friendliness toward her 50.
- Angelica — Divination Club receptionist who brings him clients and delivers the anonymous warning about Old Neil 14 15 30.
- Christina — Client seeking help locating her missing niece, Megose 18 30.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Edward’s Pathway Consultation
By Edward’s arrival in Tingen, Klein has developed a growing reputation as a diviner, sometimes seeing more than a dozen clients in an afternoon despite generally attending the club only twice a week 14.
Edward asks him to choose among several Beyonder pathways. The initial readings reject every proposed option except Secrets Suppliant, prompting Klein to suspect interference. Above the gray fog, he obtains different results: Apprentice is reasonably compatible, while Secrets Suppliant produces a violently negative response. He recommends Apprentice, and Edward pays him an additional ten pounds 15 16.
Admission of the Tower
That night, Klein hears a new plea and discovers Edward apparently suffering after drinking his potion. He establishes a connection and summons him to Sefirah Castle, where Spirit Vision shows that Edward is already healthy. Nevertheless, he accepts Edward’s belief that Mr. Fool saved him “in a sense” 16 17.
Edward offers information about Roselle’s Cards of Blasphemy. Klein admits him to the weekly Tarot Club gatherings, requires permission before revealing information about Mr. Fool, and lets him select the Tower as his codename. A subsequent divination indicates that Edward’s membership will not harm Klein and may benefit him 17.
Tarot Club Exchanges
Klein introduces the Tower and Sun, notices signs that Audrey and Edward know each other, and facilitates a trade involving the Bard formula and three Roselle diary pages. Edward also proposes a more convenient way to exchange physical items between distant members; Klein acknowledges the suggestion but does not establish such a service in the documented meeting 18 19 20.
At a later gathering, Edward asks for protection from the True Creator. Klein privately recoils at the idea of a Sequence 9 protecting someone from an evil god, but preserves Mr. Fool’s composure and offers to contact his Blessed 28.
Megose’s Disappearance
Christina reports that Megose has vanished. Klein’s initial dream divination incorrectly shows her returning home. When Christina brings her hair and confirms that she remains missing, he checks above the gray fog and verifies supernatural interference 18 30.
His next dream shows Megose visiting a villa and an abandoned warehouse before a terrifying presence attacks him through the divination. After recovering, he receives an anonymous message warning that Old Neil is about to lose control 30.
Tulip Street Investigation and Advancement
Klein and Leonard investigate a Beyonder fight on Tulip Street and find Edward living at number five. Edward claims to be a Church of Evernight official on a secret mission. Klein avoids an immediate confrontation, warns Edward through Mr. Fool, and reports the situation to Dunn 46 47.
Crestet initially believes Edward is an impostor, but later confirmation from Backlund establishes that he recently joined the Church. Edward is transferred to the Tingen Nighthawks, while Klein passes his assessment and advances to Sequence 8 Clown 47 49.
Klein subsequently requests combat training and formally introduces himself to Edward as Mr. Fool’s Blessed, claiming that he has not joined the Tarot Club. Their conversation ends with Melissa inviting Edward to dinner at the Moretti home 50.
Notable Quotes
“Taking a potion is inherently full of uncertainties and dangers. I only divined that Apprentice suited him better. I never said he wouldn’t lose control.” 17
“The next time we go on a mission, I don’t want to be stuck on the sidelines again, watching everyone fall into danger without being able to help.” 50
