"Hagrid," Ron said, never lacking in curiosity as a Gryffindor, "I can understand the biggest and the laziest, but why the ugliest too?"

"Er, well, because being a bit uglier makes them more intimidating," Hagrid said.

Hmm, that seemed to make sense?

Ron and Harry exchanged a glance, not quite sure for the moment.

Hermione was clearly more concerned about something else. She rolled her eyes at Ron and asked, "Hagrid, did you really just walk straight into the giants' camp?"

"Yes, we did. Giants don't understand manners and such. Beating around the bush doesn't work with them," Hagrid said.

"Wouldn't they attack you?" Ron asked curiously. In all the stories about giants he had heard growing up, they were brutal and extremely aggressive. Of course, that was not really something he could say outright in front of Hagrid.

"They didn't, though I'm sure some of them were thinking about it," Hagrid said unconcernedly. "But we had a way of dealing with that. Dumbledore told us what to do. He had us hold the presents he'd prepared high in the air, then keep our eyes on the Gurg, ignoring the other giants.

"That way, all the other giants stayed quiet and watched us walk over. We went right up to Karkus's feet-oh, Karkus was the name of the Gurg at the time-then bowed and put the presents in front of him. Heh, sometimes giants are actually more like Fantastic Beasts. As long as you follow certain procedures and methods, you can still approach them."

Harry and Ron nodded. The approach Hagrid described reminded them somewhat of approaching a Hippogriff in Care of Magical Creatures in their third year.

Yes, the more they thought about it, the more alike they seemed.

"What presents did you prepare? Was it food?" Ron asked.
