Background / History
Preparing Harry for Hogwarts
Dumbledore and McGonagall send Hagrid to help Harry prepare for school. He arrives at the Dursleys’ home after becoming confused by the streets in the Muggle neighborhood. Initially mistaking Harry for a girl, he recognizes his resemblance to his parents and explains that he was friends with both of them. When Petunia demands proof of his connection to Hogwarts, he produces a letter 6.
Hagrid takes Harry aboard the Knight Bus to the Leaky Cauldron. The next morning, he arranges breakfast and shows Harry how to open the concealed entrance to Diagon Alley. At Gringotts, he hands over Harry’s vault key and presents Dumbledore’s authorization to retrieve a confidential object from Vault 713. He refuses to explain the object’s identity, emphasizing that Dumbledore entrusted him with the task 7 8 9.
During their shopping trip, Hagrid explains Quidditch and accompanies Harry to Ollivander’s. Before term begins, he also teaches Harry about magical secrecy and restrictions on underage spellcasting. However, he forgets to explain how to reach the concealed railway platform, leaving Harry to research it himself 10 11.
Life at Hogwarts
Hagrid meets the arriving first-years at the station, repeatedly checks that all forty are present, and leads them to the lake. He accompanies Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville in a particularly large boat while the remaining students use smaller boats 16.
After term begins, he invites Harry to his hut, where Harry and Ron meet his enormous black hunting dog. Their visits become frequent, and they sometimes help him care for unusual animals. Hermione begins joining them after Halloween; unlike the professors, Hagrid treats the children more like friends than pupils 21 23 44.
The Guarded Object
Harry later suspects that the Gringotts break-in was connected to the object Hagrid collected, then theorizes that the three-headed dog at Hogwarts is guarding it 24 34.
When Harry and his friends accuse Snape of attacking Harry during Quidditch and attempting to steal the guarded object, Hagrid rejects both accusations. He reveals that the dog, Fluffy, belongs to him and was borrowed by Dumbledore. Although he tells the children to stop investigating, he accidentally mentions Nicolas Flamel, giving them another lead 45.
Appearance
- Enormous build: Approximately twice an ordinary adult’s height and at least three times as broad. The Dursleys’ nearly four-meter-high ground floor only just allows him to stand upright 6.
- Hair and beard: A thick tangle largely conceals his face 6.
- Eyes: Described as gleaming like black jewels 6.
- Clothing: Wears a large, dark leather coat and boots big enough for children to use as boats 6.
- Expression: His broad, radiant smile conveys kindness despite his intimidating size 6.
Personality
Hagrid is gentle, hospitable, and considerate. At the Dursleys’ home, he carefully squeezes through the doorway and apologizes when his voice becomes too loud. He orders Harry’s breakfast in advance and welcomes visitors to make themselves comfortable in his hut 6 8 23.
His thoughtfulness coexists with forgetfulness. He remembers Harry’s birthday and gives him a snowy owl, yet overlooks essential travel instructions. His explanations can also be muddled: when describing Quidditch, he repeatedly drifts into discussion of his favorite teams 10 11.
Hagrid loves Hogwarts and takes pride in Dumbledore’s trust. That loyalty also makes him unwilling to accept the children’s accusations against Snape. His enthusiasm for magical creatures is less cautious than the standard warnings suggest: he repeatedly expresses a desire to raise a dragon and envies Charlie Weasley’s life among them 9 12 45 46.
