Background / History

The Great Yan Dynasty forged the Demon Suppressing Prison over three hundred years using the nation’s full strength. Its purpose was to imprison ancient demons that could not be killed. Its core is the Nine Bends Yellow River Demon Suppressing Grand Array, founded on the Eastern Spirit Domain’s dragon veins and chained to the starlight of the Nine Heavens 185 188 229.

During an ancient war, the tower suppressed and killed countless Demon God ancestors. Its disappearance led the Demon Race to believe it had been destroyed, but its name remained embedded in their primal memory. You Ye places its last appearance fifteen hundred years before its return 242 261.

Prison served the last emperor of Great Yan and knew Dugu Xin during that dynasty. By the time Lu Shaoyou reaches the ninth level, the spirit has lived alone for over two hundred years following the dissipation of the imprisoned demonic dragon’s soul fragment 227 307.

His isolation leaves him unaware of major changes outside. Learning that Great Gan has lasted 1,253 years shocks him, as he still believes the Thousand Year Imperial Dynasty Curse is active. Lu Shaoyou tells him that it was broken over two hundred years earlier 230 231.

Appearance

  • Elderly form: Resembles a hunched old farmer, with an ancient face, cloudy eyes, and wrinkled hands like withered bark 227 233 275.
  • Eyes: Despite their cloudiness, they are described as holding the depth of a starry sky and the weight of countless years 275.
  • Spiritual body: Can become towering during activation or turn translucent when weakened 259 274.
  • Physical body: Imperial Blood later gives him actual bones, flesh, and skin 311.
  • Tower body: A colossal nine-story structure with a black circular foundation, ancient runes, and a cold, deathly presence. When empowered, it shines purple-gold; it can shrink into an exquisite palm-sized pagoda 240 242 275.

Personality

Prison initially appears tranquil and content with farming, tea, and solitude. He sees through Lu Shaoyou’s attempts to recruit him and explains the bloodline restriction without belittling the younger man’s talent. His composure breaks when news from the outside contradicts his understanding of the imperial curse 227 228 229 230 231.

He is perceptive about both people and cultivation. He trusts Dugu Xin’s preparations when Lu Shaoyou fears the marquis has been killed, and recognizes that Lu Shaoyou has unusual opportunities without demanding his secrets 259 308.

His dignity is a sensitive point. Being used as a hammer or hurled as a projectile enrages him, while restored power brings out his boastfulness and desire to settle grudges personally. Against demons, he remains defiant even when injured and cornered 294 295 304.

Abilities & Skills

Nine Bends Yellow River Demon Suppressing Grand Array

The array is the prison’s true core, connecting the stars above to the dragon veins below and forming a realm capable of refining gods and demons 229.

  • Maintains nine internal levels, with the first alone approaching the size of a small world 185 188.
  • Suppresses imprisoned demons and the abilities of visitors; it also suppresses Lu Shaoyou’s Soul-Chasing Mark 184 185.
  • Makes the ancient inscriptions at its gates understandable to those who read them 188.
  • Can be reactivated with Imperial Dragon Qi, although full awakening takes time and requires royal blood 236 259.
  • Its seals deteriorate under prolonged demonic resentment and insufficient external support 188.

Suppression and Soul Refinement

Prison uses the tower to restrain bodies, souls, and surrounding space 304 307.

  • Produces a giant golden hand to retaliate against Zhan Ming’s attack 273.
  • With the Imperial Seal’s support, locks down space across ten thousand miles and crushes Zhan Ming’s escape channel 304.
  • Draws targets toward the tower’s dark entrance with powerful suction 304.
  • Captures Zhan Ming’s escaped Divine Soul and subjects it to soul refinement at the tower’s bottom 307.
  • Later seals the sky to help block Prince You Ye’s retreat 319.

Tower Durability and Size Control

The tower can serve as both a suppressive treasure and a physical weapon 275 302 304.

  • Its body withstands Zhan Ming’s punch without actual structural damage even after the protective barrier breaks 275.
  • Shrinks to palm size or expands into a colossal pagoda 275 304.
  • Lu Shaoyou uses it as a hammer against the Blood God Blade 302.
  • Prison himself later attacks with it using pure strength 313.
  • Durability does not make its defenses inexhaustible: sustained attacks weaken the barrier and spirit, while Blood Filth Power injures him 274 294 295.

Dragon Summoning Technique

Prison teaches Lu Shaoyou a Xia Imperial Family secret technique that uses vital blood as a guide and the Purple Gold Dragon Token as a bridge to Great Gan’s national destiny 236.

  • Draws a wisp of Imperial Dragon Qi from a distant imperial source 236.
  • Supplies the key needed to activate the prison’s grand array 236.
  • Provides temporary access to imperial power without making Lu Shaoyou the prison’s rightful master 229 233 236.

Observation, Transport, and Knowledge

  • Expels Lu Shaoyou from the prison and sends him to the battlefield outside Canglan Pass 276.
  • Knows Dugu Xin’s history, the Xia clan’s origins, and the earlier prosperity of the Eastern Spirit Domain 307.
  • Explains the Yin Xu and Yang Shi stages of Cave Heaven, followed by Law Mastery and Return to Truth 309.
  • Teaches that genuine Law Mastery requires comprehending laws and engraving Great Dao Talismans into one’s Cave Heaven—not merely accumulating power 309.

Ownership Rules & Limitations

Rule or limitation Details
Xia bloodline requirement Only a bearer of the purest Xia imperial bloodline can gain the spirit’s acknowledgment and refine its core 229.
Forced refinement Prison states that unauthorized refinement would destroy both the prison and the person attempting it, regardless of their strength 229.
Bound to the array Initially cannot simply leave: he has merged with the Eastern Spirit Domain’s dragon veins and the grand formation 233.
Release through imperial authority An acknowledged Xia descendant carrying the Imperial Seal can unlock the restriction and take the weapon away 233.
Access token is insufficient The Demon Suppressing Token provides access and limited assistance, not ownership or freedom 185 233.
Incomplete activation Without an imperial controller, the revived prison cannot exert its full power; Prison relies on the Dragon Qi Lu Shaoyou summons 274 291.
Blood Filth vulnerability The Blood God Son’s treasure-corrupting power wounds the spirit and helps overwhelm his remaining defenses 294 295.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Lu Shaoyou’s Prison Trial

Shenwu Marquis sends Lu Shaoyou into the neglected prison under the stated purpose of sheltering him from the Soul-Chasing Mark while making him clear its demons. Lu Shaoyou turns the dangerous assignment into a source of Slaughter Value and soul-healing Prison Origin Power, advancing through its levels before discovering Prison in the ninth-level valley 185 186 188 227.

The expected final battle becomes a conversation with the artifact spirit. Lu Shaoyou’s attempt to obtain the weapon fails because he lacks Xia imperial blood, but their discussion leads to a way to reactivate it using Imperial Dragon Qi 228 229 233 236.

Return to the Demon Abyss

The tower’s manifestation above Shenwu Pass disturbs the Demon Abyss and awakens ancient enemies. Some seek revenge; others want to seize or destroy it before humanity regains full control 240 242 262.

Zhan Ming’s assault forces Prison to manifest outside the tower. Subsequent attacks by the Blood God Son and his servants nearly overwhelm the weakened spirit. Lu Shaoyou later uses the tower against the Blood God Blade, then sends Prison toward the Imperial Seal, enabling his recovery and revenge against Zhan Ming 275 294 295 302 303 304 307.

Embodiment and Continued Battle

After advising Lu Shaoyou on higher cultivation, Prison gains a physical body from Imperial Blood. He joins the wounded Dugu Xin in battle and later helps enclose You Ye by sealing the sky with the tower 309 311 313 319.
