Background / History
Recognition of Wang Yang
Wong was already an experienced battle sorcerer and one of Kamar-Taj's most powerful Masters when Wang Yang arrived. Theodore first told him about the newcomer’s talent, correcting Wong’s assumption that Belar would be the strongest apprentice in the batch. Wong recommended Wang Yang to Master Kamar-Taj but initially regarded him as another promising recruit 3 7 13 14.
His assessment changed when Master Kamar-Taj reported that Wang Yang had produced a combat-ready Magic Shield in one day. Wong secretly observed the apprentice through the Mirror Dimension and witnessed his rapid mastery of magical weapon construction. He concluded that Wang Yang might become the next Sorcerer Supreme and recommended that the Ancient One eventually teach him personally 7 8.
Teaching Wang Yang
When Master Kamar-Taj could no longer adequately teach Wang Yang, Wong accepted him as his apprentice. Before beginning combat instruction, he warned that talent did not protect sorcerers from arrogance, ambushes, or death in battle. He then tested Wang Yang’s portal casting inside the Mirror Dimension 13 14.
Wong introduced magical artifacts and Kamar-Taj martial arts through sparring. Wang Yang improved so quickly that Wong had to increase his strength to defeat him, privately recognizing that he probably could not have won using equal force. Afterward, he corrected Wang Yang’s movements and force generation and prescribed exercise and medicinal baths 15 16.
Satisfied with Wang Yang’s fundamentals, Wong moved on to the Rings of Raggadorr and later formal instruction in the Mirror Dimension. The apprentice’s progress repeatedly surpassed his expectations, prompting Wong to involve Hamir and seek additional instruction from Kaecilius 19 20 21 26 27.
Kaecilius and the Transfer to Mordo
Wong exploited Kaecilius’s competitive pride to make him seek out Wang Yang and share techniques he would otherwise keep to himself. Although Wong wanted the apprentice to benefit from Kaecilius’s expertise, he and Hamir warned Wang Yang that Kaecilius followed a different ideological path 30 31 33.
After Kaecilius betrayed Kamar-Taj, Wong brought Wang Yang before the gathered Masters for questioning and reassured him that he need not be nervous. Wong regarded the betrayal as consistent with Kaecilius’s extreme temperament. He later supported transferring Wang Yang to Mordo, privately relieved to relinquish the increasingly difficult responsibility of teaching him 36 37 41.
Chitauri Invasion
Wong relayed Hamir’s warning that the Chitauri were invading New York. During the fighting, he remained active in the Mirror Dimension battlefield reached through the New York Sanctum. When Wang Yang returned with Master Kamar-Taj and other sorcerers, Wong was exhausted and bloodstained but thanked him and asked him to join the front lines 42 50.
Appearance
- Youthful face: Looks fairly young despite being the same age as the veteran Master Kamar-Taj 7.
- Stern expression: Usually appears cold or expressionless, even when experiencing strong emotions 7 13 15.
- Monk’s robes: Wears robes that are bloodstained when Wang Yang encounters him during the Chitauri invasion 50.
Personality
Wong’s stern exterior conceals a warmhearted disposition. He values diligence and humility, praises genuine effort, and reminds Wang Yang to balance training with rest. His concern also extends to protecting a gifted apprentice from unnecessary danger on the battlefield 7 13 19 50.
As an instructor, he emphasizes strong fundamentals, physical conditioning, and respect for combat’s lethal risks. His corrections are severe: during martial-arts practice, even a small mistake can earn a strike from his staff. Nevertheless, his explanations of advanced magic make difficult principles accessible 14 16 19 20.
Wang Yang’s extraordinary progress unsettles his confidence. Wong usually hides his shock behind restrained praise, but eventually becomes visibly dejected and loses interest in magical research. He takes some comfort in seeing Hamir experience the same disbelief 15 20 21 22.
Despite his honest-looking demeanor, Wong can be calculating. His plan to secure Kaecilius’s instruction accounts for both the rival’s pride and his desire to win Wang Yang over, surprising Hamir with its effectiveness 31.
