Background / History
Senju upbringing
Xia Chuan grew up within the Senju Clan’s traditions despite losing its surname in childhood. She learned ninjutsu through family training rather than the Ninja Academy. She deliberately avoided becoming a professional ninja: dying on the battlefield could leave her young child in an orphanage. Nevertheless, she planned to give her child preliminary training and enroll him in the Academy when he turned six 14 20.
During her family’s difficult years, Tsunade repeatedly helped them and eventually recommended Xia Chuan for employment with Karn. Xia Chuan remained deeply grateful for this assistance even after becoming wealthy and attaining a high position 232.
Managing the Konoha shops
When Karn returned with a new shipment, Xia Chuan was already managing his shop, handling inventory, restocking, and sales records. She questioned his decision to increase prices by twenty-five to fifty percent, but accepted his explanation about wartime transport costs. Karn privately allowed staff and some of her relatives to continue buying at the original prices 14.
She helped prepare the neighboring pharmacy and recommended Jiekang Weilai, her friend’s husband, who had lost a hand on the battlefield. Karn hired him for his medical knowledge and entrusted Xia Chuan with recruiting two additional employees. He later left both Konoha shops under her supervision while traveling through the Land of Fire 15 18.
Establishing the confectionery business
Karn selected Xia Chuan to oversee the Kawaki Town confectionery factory because he considered her honest and trustworthy. He authorized her to recruit eight other workers, including unemployed members of the former Senju Clan, for factory management and cocoa-field patrols. Kawaki Miwa subsequently took over the Konoha food store 20 22.
Xia Chuan secured cocoa-growing agreements with four villages around Kawaki Town. The growers were promised high purchase prices for their beans and priority access to inexpensive grain. Karn then trained her and four other operators to use the imported confectionery machinery 22.
With enough staff recruited to begin production, Karn gave her five million ryō to purchase premises for a confectionery shop and a casino. He also instructed her to take in homeless children whose living expenses and education he would fund. She later handled preliminary casino preparations and recruitment in Kawaki Town and Tanzaku Town 25 27.
Casino growth and regional management
Xia Chuan recruited two suitable casino managers and twenty-three samurai and hired guards, four of whom could use chakra. Recognizing her improved judgment and management skills, Karn tripled her salary and retained a separate year-end bonus 34.
When the Kawaki Town casino’s daily takings exceeded 400,000 ryō, she personally handled almost all its accounts. Karn instructed her to purchase neighboring buildings, add VIP rooms, reinvest the proceeds every two weeks, and reserve twenty percent as operating funds 37.
By Chapter 40, the following businesses were under her management. Karn allowed her to identify opportunities and make investments independently 40.
| Business | Number |
|---|---|
| Casinos | 3 |
| Dessert shops | 4 |
| Confectionery factory | 1 |
| Izakayas | 4 |
| Restaurants | 3 |
| Grain stores | 3 |
She began planning a supply chain that would purchase grain directly from farmers and distribute it to grain stores and breweries. The brewery had not yet been built; Karn had agreed to supply its production equipment 40.
By Karn’s return in Chapter 73, she managed the Chamber of Commerce’s general accounts and received copies of accounts from Konoha and the Land of Waves. Her records were organized by region and business category and included newly recruited personnel. The casino network had grown to four establishments, located in Kawaki, Tanzaku Town, the Land of Fire’s capital, and Huachuan County. Casino income over the preceding four-plus months was fifty percent higher than before 73.
Her accounts also documented the organization’s substantial charitable spending. At least seventy percent of the income from its thirteen Konoha shops, together with Karn’s book income, went toward subsidizing orphanages 73.
Expansion into the Land of Waves
Xia Chuan traveled to Tanzaku Town to handle trouble affecting the business. Concerned that her existing guards could not reliably withstand bounty hunters, Karn ordered protection arrangements providing two Chunin squads each for her and Kawaki Miwa 40.
In the Land of Waves, she purchased a shipyard and recruited shipwrights and carpenters. Two Konoha Chunin squads and more than twenty samurai guards accompanied her. This shipping venture supported Karn’s plans to expand into other countries through maritime trade 48.
Root interference and reduced authority
When Karn returned after a lengthy absence, Xia Chuan reacted nervously and lowered her head when questioned. He replaced her Chamber of Commerce badge, then reviewed recordings from the eavesdropping chip in her old badge to determine what had happened. The recordings revealed that she had been compromised by Konoha’s agents 73.
After presenting the accounts, Xia Chuan gave Karn a list of newly recruited personnel and expressed reservations about some of them. Karn acknowledged her willingness to tell him, then instructed her to concentrate on expanding desserts and food while others took over the casinos and her remaining responsibilities. Although she lost authority, she felt relieved: she believed she had wronged an employer who treated her generously, contrary to the Senju Clan’s standards of conduct 73.
Root’s later assessment relied on her Senju background, a written Hokage order, and her child’s attendance at the Ninja Academy as reasons she should comply with its demands. Root also independently planted agents during the Chamber of Commerce’s rapid expansion; these recruits were not all placed through Xia Chuan. Most lacked access to core secrets 89.
Despite Karn’s earlier instruction to transfer the casinos, subsequent reports described her remaining portfolio as desserts and casinos or gambling. Pharmaceuticals and other operations had passed to different managers 89 94.
Southern peninsula acquisitions and renewed responsibilities
Karn later entrusted Xia Chuan with relocating orphans and acquiring land and businesses on the Land of Fire’s southern peninsula, between the Land of Tea and the abandoned Land of Whirlpools. He intended to develop the area into a strategic base with a port and fleet, alongside longer-term military infrastructure. Xia Chuan only vaguely understood the full plan; her own original motivation was to save more people. She delegated the reception of wandering orphans to subordinates while personally overseeing the large-scale purchases 94.
Over approximately two months, she spent nearly one hundred million ryō, chiefly acquiring a noble’s houses, shops, and farmland. The noble had approached her because he wanted to move his family inland but had been unable to sell his local assets. After reviewing her report, Karn instructed her to continue purchasing the southern peninsula’s noble-owned properties, although he considered her approach somewhat too gradual 96.
During the Third Shinobi World War, Karn questioned Xia Chuan and Kawaki about the conflict. When he reassigned Kawaki to develop computers and communications infrastructure, he instructed Xia Chuan to take over Kawaki’s previous duties 157.
After being named the Land of Fire’s next daimyo, Karn gathered Xia Chuan, Kawaki, and his other subordinates to prepare for his new role. His plans included having the Karn Chamber of Commerce replace government departments 226.
Assisting Tsunade
Tsunade later approached Xia Chuan for money while concealing her pregnancy from Karn. Xia Chuan gave her the money, cautioned her about gambling, and explained that Karn had collected her casino IOUs. Before Karn collected them, Xia Chuan had intended to pay off Tsunade’s debts gradually with her own funds 232.
Tsunade asked her several questions about children and requested that she keep the visit secret, especially from Karn. Xia Chuan answered despite being puzzled, but subsequently called Karn about Tsunade’s pregnancy. Karn then located Tsunade through Apparition and brought her to his residence in Kawaki Town 232.
Personality
Xia Chuan is diligent, honest, and increasingly decisive. Karn initially guided even her merchandise placement, but experience allowed her to recruit personnel, negotiate agricultural agreements, and invest independently. Her willingness to work outside Konoha distinguished her from employees whose family circumstances made relocation less appealing 14 22 34 37 40.
She is courteous and modest, often bowing or responding bashfully to praise. She values the security her work provides for her child and relatives, and interprets Karn’s recognition as a meaningful acknowledgment of her abilities. Her helpfulness can occasionally miss his intentions: offering to furnish his rooms inadvertently removed his excuse for declining Tsunade’s invitation 15 16 20 22.
Her involvement with Konoha’s agents creates a conflict between village and family pressures and her obligations to Karn. She feels guilty for wronging him and regards that conduct as a violation of Senju principles. Losing some managerial authority consequently brings relief rather than resentment 73 89.
She retains a charitable outlook, identifying saving people as her original aim when carrying out Karn’s orphan-relocation and expansion orders. Her gratitude to Tsunade is similarly enduring: once financially secure, she considers additional wealth less important than helping the woman who supported her family 94 232.
