Power Progression

The Dimension War incarnation and the later God Quarry incarnation are distinct: the former was destroyed before the latter’s storyline began 82.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Peak multiverse-level — Dimension War incarnation 68 Reached through an Infinity Gauntlet containing Infinity Stones gathered from multiple multiverses. Only the Space Stone remained missing. Mephisto estimated that completing the set would grant early hyper-multiverse-level combat power.
Early single-universe-level — later incarnation 82 Equipped the Infinity Gauntlet taken from Nidavellir and embedded the Power Stone and Space Stone.
Late single-universe-level 83 Acquired the Soul Stone by sacrificing Gamora, then defeated the Collector for the Mind Stone, bringing his total to four.
Five-Stone enhancement; realm unspecified 84 85 86 Added the Reality Stone delivered by Supergiant. Could overpower Burst King Kong Thor and threaten Thor and Hela together, but still lacked the Time Stone.
Early hyper-omniverse-level — stated trial result 163 Passed the God Quarry’s Soul Trial and received six-colored Infinity Power from the Eternity Witches. Immediately destroyed a distant multiverse with an energy sphere.
Mid hyper-omniverse-level 181 182 Combined with the awakened Asura Armor. His compatibility was still incomplete, leaving room for further improvement.
  • Rank discrepancy: The God Quarry breakthrough explicitly ends at early hyper-omniverse-level, but subsequent passages repeatedly describe his unarmored Infinity Power as peak hyper-multiverse-level 163 164 165 166 168.

Background / History

Titan Star and hatred of the gods

The Celestials destroyed Thanos’s home, Titan Star, while the gods worshipped by its inhabitants failed to intervene. Thanos consequently hated both the Celestials responsible and the gods who had offered no protection. The Celestials initially allowed his search for Infinity Stones to continue because they regarded the surviving Titan as a spectacle rather than a threat 165 166.

His destructive ambitions also had a hidden influence. The Eternity Witches discovered a connection between his fate and the First Firmament, whose will had instilled in him the desire to collect the Six Infinity Stones, destroy the universe, and eliminate the Celestials 119.

The Dimension War incarnation

An earlier Thanos ruled the Black Order, whose campaigns had conquered countless individual universes. He sought multiversal Infinity Stones rather than their weaker single-universe counterparts 68.

Loki offered to help him obtain Earth’s Space Stone. Thanos questioned how Loki could overcome the Ancient One, the Vishanti, and the Lord of the Ming Realm. After Mephisto and the Shadow Great Emperors effortlessly broke his Power Stone attack, he heard their proposal for an alliance 68.

The resulting plan joined three objectives: Thanos would obtain the Space Stone, Loki would seize Asgard’s throne, and Mephisto would acquire the Eternal Flame. Thanos accepted Mephisto’s assistance but specifically questioned whether it required a soul-binding contract 69. This incarnation later participated in the Dimension War and was destroyed by Thunder Yatales, with no possibility of resurrection 82.

Renewed Infinity Stone campaign

A later incarnation invaded Nidavellir with the Chitauri Army, slaughtered its inhabitants, and seized the Infinity Gauntlet forged by Eitri. Lu Chen monitored him as a potential summoner of the Asura Armor 82.

On Vormir, Thanos sacrificed his beloved daughter Gamora to obtain the Soul Stone. He subsequently defeated the Collector for the Mind Stone, while Supergiant recovered the Reality Stone from a sealed space on Earth 83 84.

With five Stones, Thanos invaded Earth for the Time Stone. Thor confronted him in the King Kong Armor, and Hela joined the battle after saving Thor from a Power Stone attack. Thanos destroyed a distant planet and directed its fragments toward Earth, then attempted to seize the Time Stone from Doctor Strange 84 85.

Thunder Yatales’s intervention severely wounded Thanos and shattered his Space Stone. The Avengers then prevented him from activating the Gauntlet. Ebony Maw died protecting him, Hela pierced his chest, and Thor severed his Gauntlet-wearing right hand. Supergiant escaped with Thanos, leaving the Gauntlet behind; the remaining Black Order members were killed 86 87.

God Quarry trial

Thanos and Supergiant searched for the God Quarry for three hundred years. Before entering, he named her his successor as ruler of the Chitauri should he fail. Inside, he discovered mountains of Infinity Stones and statues of previous seekers whose souls had been trapped after failing the trial 119.

The Eternity Witches placed him in a false life as Earth’s celebrated guardian and leader of the Fantastic Five. He forgot his identity and original purpose, accepting memories of defending Earth against Infinity Ultron, the Dark Avengers, and other threats 120.

After recovering his memories, Thanos killed Night Bat, Captain Britain, Siren, Storm King, and Human Torch within the dream. He then destroyed the dream planet, shattered the illusion, and awakened in the God Quarry. The witches acknowledged his success and granted him Infinity Power 162 163.

Upon his return, the First Firmament’s consciousness secretly redirected his objective toward destroying the gods 164.

Recruitment and the Asura Armor

The Shadow Great Emperors stopped Thanos from immediately hunting the Celestials, explaining that their true bodies were far stronger than the avatars he knew. He accepted her offer of cooperation and was summoned to the Land of Finality 165 166.

There, Lu Chen and his allies revealed the Beyonders’ Everything Dies plan, which threatened the omniverse. Because Lu Chen and the Shadow Great Emperors could not act openly, and the creation gods were under surveillance, they recruited Thanos as their “blade.” His assigned role included a staged victory over Eternity that would expose the gods’ sanctuary 167.

Lu Chen brought him to the Ming Realm Dimension, where Thanos infused the developing Asura Armor with his soul and Infinity Power. After returning to Chitauri Planet, he resurrected Ebony Maw, Cull Obsidian, Corvus Glaive, and Proxima Midnight 168.

Ten years after the armor’s creation, its consciousness fully awakened. Thanos answered its summons and combined with it, releasing an energy pillar that shattered the universe barrier 181.

Destruction of Eternity’s Divine Kingdom

Wearing the Asura Armor, Thanos joined Man-Thing’s campaign against the gods. Seventh Eternity, Death, and Galactus confronted them as part of the covert plan to draw the fighting toward Eternity’s Divine Kingdom 182 183.

Thanos drove Eternity through the universe barrier and protected Man-Thing from Death and Galactus. He later countered the three creation gods’ combined attack with the Asura Purgatory Slash 183 184.

After their defeat, Thanos and Man-Thing entered the Divine Kingdom and slaughtered its inhabitants. Thanos killed Zeus and the remaining chief gods, completing the sanctuary’s destruction. The Shadow Great Emperors absorbed the fallen gods’ origins, while Seventh Eternity reclaimed the kingdom’s creation authority 184.

Appearance

  • Purple skin and massive build: Repeatedly emphasized during his Infinity Stone campaign and the sacrifice of Gamora 82 83 84.
  • Golden battle armor: Worn during the invasion of Earth; much of it was shattered by Hela and Thor’s combined attack 85.
  • Silver-black Asura Armor: His later combat form, combining the powers of light and darkness 168 182.

Personality

Thanos is ruthless, proud, and convinced of his own destiny. He threatens Loki for potentially wasting his time, sacrifices Gamora despite visibly grieving, and initially refuses to accept his defeat on Earth 68 83 87.

His determination makes him particularly suitable for the Asura Armor, which demands an unwavering commitment to either righteousness or evil. Lu Chen identifies Thanos’s willingness to sacrifice even someone he loves as evidence of that resolve 146.

He can nevertheless recognize his limitations. He accepts Earth’s defenses as a genuine obstacle, admits his ignorance of higher cosmic powers, and agrees to cooperate with stronger beings without abandoning his objectives 69 166 167.

His treatment of trusted followers is markedly gentler. He reassures Supergiant, names her his potential successor, and displays a rare smile after resurrecting the Black Order 119 164 168.

Abilities & Skills

Infinity Stone Manipulation

Thanos channels individual Stones and combines their effects through the Infinity Gauntlet 85 86.

  • Power projection: Fires purple beams and shock waves capable of overpowering armored opponents 68 85.
  • Spatial movement: Uses the Space Stone to appear beside Doctor Strange regardless of distance 85.
  • Spatial defenses: Creates overlapping Space Barriers, though Thunder Yatales’s attack breaks through them and shatters the Stone 86.
  • Large-scale destruction: Destroys a planet and sends its fragments toward Earth 85.
  • Activation limitation: Sustained close-range attacks prevent him from using the Gauntlet effectively 86.

Infinity Power

The Eternity Witches grant Thanos this power after he passes the God Quarry trial 163.

  • Multiverse destruction: Erases a distant multiverse with a concentrated energy sphere 163.
  • Resurrection: Restores four fallen Black Order members with a snap and a green storm of time 168.
  • Armor synchronization: Infuses the Asura Armor with his soul and Infinity Power, establishing a connection before its full awakening 168.

Asura Armor Techniques

The armor combines the Light Origin and Dark Origin, enhancing Thanos to mid hyper-omniverse-level 168 182.

  • Starburst: Compresses an exploding galaxy’s power into a punch against Eternity 183.
  • Asura Fist: Delivers a silver-black energy strike that tears space 183.
  • Asura Purgatory Slash: Uses the Asura Purgatory Blade against the combined attack of Eternity, Death, and Galactus 184.
  • Compatibility requirement: His initial synchronization is incomplete; he expects further honing to increase its power 182.
  • Mental requirement: An impure or wavering state of mind can cause the armor’s energy to fail and force it to deactivate 146.

Dream-Acquired Abilities

These powers are explicitly acquired within the God Quarry’s dream; their continued availability after awakening is not established 163.

  • Spatial Jump: Disappears and reappears around opponents.
  • Gravity Ability: Restrains movement, enhances physical strikes, and crushes Human Torch.
  • Extreme durability: Withstands Storm King and Human Torch’s attacks, although Siren’s mental assault causes intense pain 162 163.
