Background / History
Hidan was an ordinary Chunin in Yugakure before gaining immortality and learning Death Controlling Possessed Blood. He later wears a Yugakure rogue ninja forehead protector around his neck 1 30.
At the Jashin Cult’s hidden mountain base near the Land of Rivers, Hidan and Shinji undergo blood collection, experiments, and daily taijutsu sparring. As survivors of the cult’s ritual, they are exceptionally valuable to researchers attempting to reproduce their immortality 1 6.
Their rivalry predates the opening chapter. After one successful sneak attack by Hidan, Shinji retaliated by decapitating him and burying his head. Hundreds of cultists searched for three days and nights before Takihata forced Shinji to reveal its location 1.
Appearance
- Hair: Gray and slicked back 1.
- Eyes: Purplish-red 1.
- Forehead protector: Yugakure rogue ninja protector worn around his neck 1 19.
- Religious accessory: A pendant bearing the Jashin Cult’s triangle-within-a-circle emblem 32.
- Ritual transformation: His skin turns black and develops distinctive white markings while Death Controlling Possessed Blood is active 3 27.
- Temporary change: His hair is burned away during the Dry Well incident, leaving him bald afterward 17.
Personality
Hidan is foul-mouthed, boastful, and easily provoked. His insistence on beating Shinji turns a hot spring visit into an overnight endurance contest that continues despite orders to leave and repeated bloodletting. Challenges to his courage likewise push him into reckless confrontations 5 6 14.
He takes pleasure in slaughter and in the pain involved in his sacrificial technique. Weak opponents disappoint him, and he repeatedly seeks higher-quality sacrifices for Jashin. His devotion is directed toward the god he credits with giving him a new life—not toward Takihata, whose authority he increasingly disregards 3 23 32.
His hostility toward Shinji conceals growing attachment. He defends Shinji against a cultist’s insults, becomes angry when Shinji ignores him, and treasures the custom scythe despite pretending it is unremarkable. When lost in Greed’s cave, he privately expects Shinji to find him while insisting that he does not need help 8 32 34 46.
Abilities & Skills
Immortality and Self-Healing
Hidan’s ritual-granted immortality allows him to survive injuries that would ordinarily be fatal 1.
- Survives a neck wound, decapitation, and extensive dismemberment 1 47.
- Uses his durability to trade injuries with opponents, accepting several wounds to land one of his own 29.
- Still experiences pain, exhaustion, and the effects of severe blood loss 1 6 7.
- Has powerful self-healing rather than immediate limb regeneration; his severed arm does not simply grow back during the Zabuza fight 29.
- Can be immobilized by dismemberment and requires outside assistance to reassemble his body 47 50.
Death Controlling Possessed Blood
Hidan links his body to a target after consuming their blood and standing within a ritual symbol consisting of a triangle inside a circle. Injuries inflicted on him are reproduced on the linked victim 3 27 28.
- Blood acquisition: Drinks collected blood or licks it from his weapon 3 27.
- Self-inflicted damage: Uses his black spear to reproduce cuts and puncture wounds on the target 3 28.
- Enemy-inflicted damage: Can transfer wounds caused by the target’s own attacks 28 29.
- Ritual boundary: Remaining inside the symbol is necessary for injury transfer. Zabuza interrupts the technique by knocking him away; Hidan later resumes it by stepping back into the symbol 28 29.
- Early limitation: Its duration is still short during his first recorded demonstration 3.
- Target limitation: The technique has no effect on the hair creature in the Dry Well 15.
- Termination: The ritual ends when the linked target dies 29.
Taijutsu and Weapon Combat
Daily sparring and additional training after his defeat by Shinji improve Hidan’s close-range fighting 1 9 23.
- Beats a Chunin with rapid punches after evading his attack 23.
- Fights Zabuza with paired machetes and sacrifices an arm to secure an opportunity to draw blood 27.
- Uses broad, sweeping scythe attacks to slaughter lizard monsters 46.
- Remains vulnerable to superior speed and strength; Greed steals his weapon and overwhelms him before he can respond effectively 46.
Ninjutsu Limitations
The cult’s modifications leave Hidan with chakra but make conventional ninjutsu extremely difficult to perform. Researchers suspect mutated chakra pathways cause abnormal flow during hand seals 4.
- Death Controlling Possessed Blood remains usable despite this impairment 4.
- Cannot use Fire Release when confronting the Dry Well creature 15.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Bloody Triple-Bladed Scythe — An entirely red weapon commissioned by Shinji and given to Hidan. Its three differently sized blades make attacks harder to defend against and help collect enemy blood. A ring at the shaft’s base permits rope attachment for throwing and retrieval. Shinji’s system does not recognize it as convertible into a Cursed Tool 32 34.
- Pitch-black short spear — Carried inside his clothing; used for stabbing opponents and inflicting ritual wounds. Later shown as retractable and concealed in his sleeve 1 3 46.
- Kunai — Used for ordinary combat and cutting through the Dry Well creature’s hair 13 15 20.
- Paired machetes — Adopted during the Gato mission because Hidan enjoys their straightforward killing power; also used against Zabuza 23 27.
- Explosive tags — Carried after considering Shinji’s “human bomb” suggestion. Detonates one to escape Zabuza’s Water Prison, despite concerns about losing body parts 29.
Relationships
- Akagi Shinji — Rival and mission partner. Their mutual violence develops into grudging loyalty: Shinji takes punishment in his place, gives him the scythe, and rescues him from Greed 1 9 34 47 50.
- Cult Leader Takihata — Oversees his experiments, training, and missions. Values Hidan as a successful ritual subject but becomes wary when Hidan’s devotion to Jashin makes him increasingly difficult to control 3 9 32.
- Lord Jashin — Object of his worship. Hidan attributes his immortality to Jashin and treats killings as sacrifices 1 22 46.
- Mira Peng — Client and cult associate. Hidan resents his men’s dismissive treatment but later protects him from Zabuza at Shinji’s direction 19 27.
- Zabuza — Opponent whom Hidan considers a worthy sacrifice. Defeating a member of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen becomes a source of pride 27 29 30.
- Greed — Special Grade Cursed Spirit that steals his scythe and dismembers him. Hidan asks Shinji to kill it and promises to owe him a favor 46 47.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Cult Rivalry and Divine Punishment
After losing the hot spring contest to Shinji’s deception, Hidan seeks another fight. Shinji’s newly developed physical enhancement overwhelms him. When Hidan discovers that Shinji has endured Divine Punishment following their confrontation, he investigates and defends him against a mocking cultist. He subsequently focuses on training rather than immediately provoking another rematch 6 7 8 9.
Dry Well Incident
During their journey to the Land of Waves, Hidan follows Shinji into a village detour. He helps fight a creature whose hair and fragrance lure and drain living beings, but his sacrificial technique proves ineffective. Trapped in a cocoon of hair, he is saved when Shinji returns with fuel and burns the creature 10 13 14 15.
Land of Waves Mission
Hidan and Shinji accept Mira Peng’s commission against Gato. Hidan slaughters the armed guards while Shinji kills Gato and takes his head as proof 19 22 23.
During the subsequent supply-loading operation, Hidan protects Mira Peng and fights Zabuza. After collecting Zabuza’s blood, he uses his ritual to transfer injuries. Although Zabuza interrupts the technique and traps him in a Water Prison, Hidan escapes with an explosive tag and returns to the ritual symbol, turning Zabuza’s final stabbing attack against him 25 27 28 29.
Scythe Acquisition
Following their return, Shinji has the Bloody Triple-Bladed Scythe forged for Hidan. Their first encounter with the completed weapon ends with Shinji accidentally impaling him; the subsequent repair also leaves scissors apparently sewn inside his belly. When Shinji later reveals that the weapon was made for him, Hidan enthusiastically accepts it while verbally downplaying his gratitude 32 33 34.
Missing Sacrifices and Greed
Sent to investigate vanished sacrifices near the Land of Rivers–Land of Rain border, Hidan and Shinji discover a ruined town plagued by cursed spirits. They kill a Grade 3 Human-Faced Centipede together, then separate to hunt more efficiently 36 39 40 42.
Hidan pursues monsters into Greed’s shifting cave and is disarmed, defeated, and mounted on a wall in pieces. Shinji answers his request for revenge, exorcises Greed, and stitches him back together. Hidan survives but complains about the uneven repair 46 47 49 50.
Connection to Shinji’s System
- Hidan is Shinji’s bound mission-trigger character. Building their bond advances the New Undying Duo mission and grants rewards to Shinji 2.
- Receiving the custom scythe adds 99 bond points, completing the mission’s second stage at 500/500 34.
- Their bond allows Shinji to earn cursed soul points from Hidan’s monster kills, encouraging them to hunt separately 42.
- Hidan’s request to destroy Greed triggers An Eye for an Eye: eliminate the spirit and cut it into eighteen pieces. Its rewards belong to Shinji, not Hidan 47 50.
