Background / History
Giyu’s older sister died protecting him from a demon on the night before her wedding. He later came under Urokodaki’s care after what the narration calls two devastating blows in succession; the supplied account does not explain the second. He kept his sister’s red haori as a treasured reminder of her 21.
At first, Giyu was almost completely uncommunicative and repeatedly said he should die. Urokodaki’s encouragement had little effect. Sabito gradually reached him through patient companionship, eventually slapping him and insisting that he had no right to discard the life his sister had saved 18 21.
When Xia Xi arrived on Mount Sagiri, Giyu had already completed basic physical conditioning and learned Water Breathing and its accompanying sword forms. He initially found the newcomer frightening, but shared meals and daily training helped him become more comfortable and noticeably more talkative 15 17 18.
Giyu joined Sabito in challenging Xia Xi to a wooden-sword spar. Their defeat became a practical lesson in adapting techniques and coordinating attacks, followed by further combat practice and treatment for their injuries. After witnessing Xia Xi’s duel with Urokodaki, Giyu recognized the much greater strength gap but began imagining a future in which all three fought demons together. Before Xia Xi left for his first mission, Giyu and Sabito gave him a handwoven green cord knot 19 21 22 23.
Appearance
Giyu is a black-haired boy a few years younger than Xia Xi, with a solemn, unapproachable expression 15.
- Dark blue eyes that often reveal little outward emotion 17.
- Slightly childlike cheeks, still retaining some baby fat 21.
- Bright red haori inherited from his sister; it is too small to fit him properly 21.
Personality
Giyu is sensitive, quiet, kind, and gentle, but struggles to communicate those qualities. His brief remarks can sound dismissive or insulting when he actually means something quite different. During target practice, his muttered “It’s just practice” accompanies an inward conviction that he has no talent—not contempt for Sabito’s performance 18.
His lack of confidence repeatedly makes him compare himself unfavorably with Sabito and Xia Xi. He rarely smiles except around Sabito, whose encouragement helps him continue training. Despite his self-doubt, Giyu quickly returns to the fight after Xia Xi knocks him down, and eventually resolves to become strong enough to protect both companions 17 19 22 23.
Giyu interprets Xia Xi’s relentless practice as an expression of grief and revenge rather than accepting his invented “Flow-State Cutoff” explanation. Remembering his own sister’s sacrifice makes him feel that he understands the older trainee’s apparent obsession 17.
Abilities & Skills
Water Breathing
Giyu learns Water Breathing under Urokodaki. His daily exercises include sitting beneath waterfalls and in rivers to study water’s changing forms, maintain mental calm, and strengthen balance and physique 17 18.
- Third Form: Flowing Dance — Used against flying wooden targets. He shatters only half of ten targets, missing or striking the others off-center 18.
- Seventh Form: Drop Ripple Thrust — A fast thrust used to exploit an opening while Sabito pressures Xia Xi. Xia Xi evades it, pins the wooden sword, and disables the attack 19.
- Tenth Form: Constant Flux — Successive strikes build on earlier momentum, making each blow stronger. Xia Xi notices the increasing force but stops the sequence with a precise strike to Giyu’s wrist 19.
- Limitations — Powerful forms still require opportunities to land and sustain them. Xia Xi teaches him not to assume an enemy will allow an uninterrupted sequence 19.
Defensive Swordsmanship
Giyu favors observation, defense, and counterattack. Xia Xi describes his swordsmanship as cold and refined, with remarkable intuition and reflexes that allow him to strike later yet land first 17.
- Waits until the final moment before selecting an appropriate response 17.
- Opens the joint spar in a tight defensive stance while Sabito takes the offensive 19.
- Receives instruction in supporting Sabito without obstructing his blade and alternating attacks around his companion’s timing 19.
Learning Aptitude
Xia Xi considers Giyu a rare talent and judges his comprehension slightly higher than Sabito’s, despite his lower physical strength 17.
- During Urokodaki’s demonstrations, his skill progress sometimes rises almost fifty percent faster than Sabito’s 17.
- Progress is inconsistent and occasionally stops altogether; Xia Xi cannot determine whether distraction or buried insecurity is responsible 17.
- Repeated sparring produces noticeable growth in strength, though he remains far below Xia Xi’s combat level 19 22.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wooden sword — Used for Water Breathing drills and sparring with Sabito and Xia Xi 18 19.
- Sister’s red haori — A cherished keepsake that he holds tightly when her death is discussed 21.
Relationships
- Sakonji Urokodaki — Adoptive guardian and Water Breathing teacher. He tries to help Giyu overcome his emotional withdrawal and notices his improved sociability after Xia Xi’s arrival 15 18.
- Sabito — Best friend and fellow trainee, who treats Giyu like a younger brother. His protection and encouragement help Giyu regain the will to live and persist in training 16 17 18 21 22.
- Xia Xi / Kurumazuka Natsumi — Senior training companion and informal combat instructor. Giyu moves from apprehension to admiration, learns from his sparring lessons, and hopes to fight beside him 15 17 19 22 23.
- Older sister — Died protecting him immediately before her wedding. Her sacrifice is central to his grief, and her haori remains his treasured possession 17 21.
