Background / History

Kanae’s home life was shattered by demons. The Stone Hashira saved her, and she and her younger sister, Shinobu, depended on one another afterward. The sisters promised to destroy as many evil demons as possible so that other innocent people would not suffer the same tragedy 45 46.

After passing the Corps’ final test, Kanae stayed at the Butterfly Mansion. There, she studied handwritten notes left by the First Flower Hashira in its records room and learned Flower Breathing through practice. She did not invent the style or receive direct instruction in it from a Cultivator 44.

Kanae is a short, gentle-looking girl with violet eyes and a butterfly hair ornament 34 39 41.

Personality

Kanae is gentle and composed, but her kindness does not make her passive. She protects her messenger crow, remains behind to cover injured allies and civilians, and urges Kojiro to survive rather than sacrifice himself in a fight he cannot win. The death of a fellow swordsman provokes intense grief and anger 35 36.

Her compassion extends to a dying demon without excusing its crimes. Watching Tanmu weep, she considers that demons may once have been ordinary people whose wills were corrupted by the Demon King. This strengthens her hatred of the Demon King rather than diminishing her resolve to fight 38.

Kanae answers insecurity with determination. After being unable to keep pace with Xia Xi, she briefly recalls Himejima’s assessment that neither she nor Shinobu possesses exceptional talent, then resolves to train harder until she can stand beside dependable senior swordsmen—or surpass them 39.

Outside combat, she becomes flustered by Xia Xi’s attentive treatment and Uzui’s romantic teasing. She nevertheless describes Xia Xi as a respected colleague rather than choosing to pursue him romantically. She also has a playful side, giggling at Uzui’s mishaps and answering his teasing with pointed remarks about his manners 42 44 45.

• Investigation: Sent with two Kanoto-ranked swordsmen after workers and their families disappear. The team discovers evidence of a previous investigator’s death and encounters a demon emerging from a tree 34.
• Pursuit and ambush: Pursues the retreating demon because its surviving captives may be moved or killed. A pit trap separates her from her teammates; one is killed and Kojiro is badly injured 35.
• Holding action: Keeps Mu occupied while Kojiro finds the prisoners, then orders him to lead the survivors south. Mu’s older brother, Luo, arrives before her reinforcements, turning the battle into a two-against-one fight 36.
