Arc 14Across the Dark Continent

Joey helped end the Succession War by destroying the Urn, then joined the expedition across the Imaginary Continent and through the Dark Gate. On the Dark Continent, the party encountered Pap and a life-draining mist as Joey searched for ways to understand and survive the threats.

  • Joey used Bites the Dust to expose the black aura’s weakness, and Ging helped him destroy Nasubi’s Urn, ending the aura and the Succession War.
  • Joey learned that Izunavi and the others had survived, then explored the Unexplored Waters with Ging and Morel while scouting ahead of Black Whale 1.
  • Joey joined the Hunter Association’s inland expedition, studied life-energy-absorbing scales, and fought Monster Insects and a Fire Dragon alongside Cluck and Leorio.
  • Joey’s group crossed the Imaginary Continent and reached the Dark Gate, where the Gatekeeper tested the expedition before allowing it onto the Dark Continent.
  • Beyond joined Cheadle’s expedition, and Joey traveled with Zigg as the groups headed toward the Ancient Labyrinth City through a dangerous forest.
  • Pap attacked the expedition at night, causing people to shrivel and smile, and Joey used Bites the Dust to return to camp and warn Ging and Cheadle.
  • Joey and the team investigated Pap with camera-bearing hummingbirds and Nen Beasts, then avoided Kakin’s route and continued cautiously through the forest.
  • After a thick fog covered the Forest Sea, Joey found that mist in a bottle drained ants’ life energy and turned their bodies into mist.
Chapters 331–355 Vol. 4 Read

Ch. 331A shifting objective, a dead end, a headshot!

Joey and the Hunters discovered that Nasubi’s apparent death had not stopped the Succession War or the spreading black aura, leaving them facing a choice between killing Princes and letting everyone die. Ging killed the Eighth Queen and escaped, prompting Joey to trigger Bites the Dust through Woble as the chapter ended.

  • Joey arranged for Nina to control the Eighth Queen and turn the black aura into white aura, while Fugetsu and Kacho hid in the passage.
  • Botobai’s Nen Beasts pierced the black aura and struck Nasubi, splitting him and the Throne, but the black aura continued spreading.
  • Joey realized that Nasubi’s death had not ended the Succession War and that the black aura might only stop when one Prince remained.
  • Ging proposed building large Coffin Areas to expose a flaw in the black aura, but Joey concluded they needed Bites the Dust and a new experience of despair.
  • Ging shot the Eighth Queen in the head, then used a teleportation ability to escape after explaining that Joey could not leave Black Whale 1 without her.
  • Joey took Woble, urged the others to remember their anger at Ging, and had Killer Queen touch the Fourteenth Prince as he felt despair.

Ch. 332One more time-That's it? A piece of skin!

Joey used Bites the Dust to rewind time and worked with Ging to build Coffin Areas that could reduce the black aura and help save people aboard Black Whale 1. After Nasubi was killed, Joey recovered a mysterious Ming Skin, while the group faced the ship’s dangers and the fallout of the Succession War.

  • Joey met Ging after the time reset and asked him to arrange for the Kent Family to build Coffin Areas on the Lower Level, then sent the plans to Domi.
  • Joey and Ging carried out their plan, and the Coffin Areas and hull openings reduced the black aura enough for Joey to sense the location of the Ming Nasubi used.
  • Ging attacked the Twelfth Prince after Nasubi’s identity was exposed, but Nasubi’s attempt to kill the prince failed; Nina controlled the Eighth Queen, and Botobai tore Nasubi apart.
  • Joey retrieved a piece of skin bearing an unknown map from Nasubi’s pocket, and Ging offered him three hundred million Jenny to make a copy.
  • Joey and Ging discussed Kakin’s political turmoil and the dangers facing Black Whale 1 as the ship continued through Unexplored Waters.
  • Ging told Joey that Izunavi and his companions had been rescued and were no longer aboard Black Whale 1.

Ch. 333Wish Fulfillment, the Second Prince, and Falsehood

Joey realized that the apparent surrender of Kakin’s princes and the reassuring news from Ging and Hisoka were wishes made real inside a false world created by the Second Prince Camilla’s Guardian Nen Beast. He confronted Camilla and began tracing when the illusion had started, focusing on the Ming Skin and Nasubi’s death.

  • Ging told Joey that Izunavi, Hanzo, and Basho were alive and would return, while Joey noticed Camilla’s Guardian Nen Beast watching him.
  • Benjamin, the Second Prince, and the Ninth Prince surrendered to the Hunter Association, and Mizaistom led them toward the Lower Level.
  • Joey challenged Hisoka about the falsehoods around him, and Hisoka revealed herself as the Second Prince Camilla.
  • Joey deduced that Camilla’s Guardian Nen Beast used Wish Fulfillment and that the apparent Camilla before him was a false person shaped by his wishes.
  • Camilla explained that Joey’s wishes became truths in the illusory world and revealed that she had not killed the Fifth Prince, though her people had killed the Sixth.
  • Joey questioned whether the false world began when he found the Ming Skin in Nasubi’s pocket or when Nasubi died.

Ch. 334Breaking the deadlock, awakening, Nen Beast Kacho

Joey woke from the Second Prince's illusion and discovered that Nasubi's death had unleashed black-aura-enhanced Guardian Nen Beasts and set the Succession War's final stage in motion. As seven Guardian Nen Beasts began fighting above the dome, the nearby princes vanished and figures appeared in the empty coffins.

  • Joey sensed Killer Queen and used their connection to wake himself from the Second Prince's illusion.
  • Joey saw the princes and their Guardian Nen Beasts surrounded by black aura, and Nen Beast Kacho told him Nasubi's death had freed the beasts and made the Urn impossible to destroy through his Guardian Nen Beast's Time Reversal.
  • Ging, Mizaistom, Botobai, Ginta, and Koyakawa awakened, while Botobai's Nen Beast moved to attack the Second Prince and the others tried to rouse the victims.
  • Nen Beast Kacho urged Joey and the others to destroy the Urn during the coming battle, then lunged toward the coffins as Guardian Nen Beasts attacked the beasts of the dead princes.
  • The dead princes' Guardian Nen Beasts were devoured, and the seven remaining beasts began fighting above the dome as figures appeared in the empty coffins and the nearby princes disappeared.

Ch. 335God Script, time abilities, shattering

Joey and Ging stopped Nasubi’s Guardian Nen Beast from restoring the Seed Urn, ending the Succession War and dispersing the black aura. The Princes awakened as the Nen Beasts vanished, and Black Whale 1 resumed its voyage toward the Imaginary Continent.

  • Ging revealed that he could use changes in time and shattered the Urn before Nasubi’s Guardian Nen Beast could restore it.
  • Nasubi’s Guardian Nen Beast rewound out of existence, causing the other Guardian Nen Beasts to stop and the black aura to disperse.
  • The Princes awakened, the Nen Beasts began disappearing, and the Nen Beast Kacho told Joey that Kacho cared for him before vanishing.
  • Joey told the Nen Beast Kacho he would not be with Kacho, and she said Kacho already knew he would not return her feelings.
  • The Hunter Association took control of Black Whale 1, and Morel steered the damaged ship toward the Imaginary Continent.

Ch. 336The End, the Status Quo, and the Observation Deck

After the Succession War, Joey learned that Izunavi might have survived and that the Phantom Troupe had left the Black Whale 1, then went outside to see the Unexplored Waters. He emerged from the ship into a sight that completely captivated him.

  • Joey learned from Ging that Izunavi had survived a dangerous assignment and that Kurapika's search might not be pointless.
  • Ging told Joey that the Phantom Troupe, Beyond's team, the Zoldyck Family, and Razor's group were aboard a submarine behind the Black Whale 1.
  • Joey went to the Third Tier Observation Deck, where Yan Mei offered to escort him outside but he hurried past her through an existing iron door.
  • Joey heard Yan Mei complain after he left and considered Morena's plans and the Ai Yi Yi Family's potential danger.
  • Joey emerged into the storm outside the Black Whale 1 and was captivated by the sight before him.

Ch. 337Unexplored Waters × Manipulation? × Teaching

Joey and Ging explored the Unexplored Waters alongside the Black Whale 1, witnessing enormous monsters and discussing the Dark Continent and Beyond’s route. Ging demonstrated his ability to manipulate a World Bird and continued teaching Joey as they traveled toward the Imaginary Continent.

  • Joey spotted flocks of World Birds catching fish in the storm, and Ging explained that the birds lived on World Trees and could lead explorers to them.
  • Joey asked whether humanity still lived beyond Lake Mobius, and Ging said they would have to find out through exploration.
  • A gigantic sea monster leapt out of the water, devoured many World Birds, and sent towering waves crashing toward the Black Whale 1.
  • Joey and Ging flew above the waves beside the ship, and Ging used a Manipulation ability to take control of a World Bird.
  • Ging taught Joey about using Nen to explore and protect himself, and the two traveled on World Birds while testing Joey’s abilities and keeping pace with the ship.
  • Joey saw that the Phantom Troupe and Zoldyck Family had returned from Beyond’s Submarine, while the Hunter Association’s damaged Warship continued following the Black Whale 1.

Ch. 338Control quality and threat transition

Joey learned Ging’s method for temporarily controlling beasts and used it to explore the Unexplored Waters while avoiding the growing violence aboard Black Whale 1. After more than seven weeks at sea, the ship was about a week from reaching the Imaginary Continent.

  • Ging explained how Nen quality, threats, and temporary vows could control unintelligent beasts, and Joey learned to use the method within the range of his En.
  • Joey explored the Unexplored Waters, recording enormous crustacean beasts that rested beneath the sea and proved too large for him to control.
  • As murders aboard Black Whale 1 escalated and the Phantom Troupe searched for him, Joey stayed at sea and served as a scout for Morel’s team.
  • Joey weighed the dangers facing the Phantom Troupe, Hisoka, and Kurapika aboard the ship, and chose to wait for his rivals to weaken each other.
  • More than seven weeks into the voyage, Joey realized the ship was likely about a week away from the Imaginary Continent.

Ch. 339Imaginary Continent!

Joey reached the Imaginary Continent and learned that V5 forces were stationed there to collect Kakin’s expedition, while the Hunter Association planned to cross the continent en route to the Dark Continent. After boarding a boat with Morel’s team, Joey questioned whether the supposedly V5 warships and soldiers were truly what they claimed, but he landed without proof of anything suspicious.

  • Joey flew ahead of Black Whale 1 and landed on a V5 warship after its officer called him aboard.
  • Joey inspected the soldiers’ unusual Nen-infused armor and weapons, then learned that people lived inside the coast’s enormous black rocks, known as the Black Rock Belt.
  • An adjutant told Joey that the warships had been sent to collect Kakin’s people and that the expedition would have to cross the Imaginary Continent and another stretch of sea to reach the Dark Continent.
  • Joey learned the Hunter Association had listed him among its Dark Continent personnel and asked why the soldiers lacked Nen, but the adjutant refused to explain.
  • Joey joined Morel’s team on a boat to the Black Rock Belt and questioned how the warships had reached the continent and whether their crews were really from V5.
  • Morel said Cheadle and Mizaistom had met the V5 representatives, and Joey landed on the unknown shore with the team.

Ch. 340Parting Ways, the Hunter Team

After reaching the Imaginary Continent, Joey arranged for Kurapika and Biscuit to take the Kakin Princes into hiding while he joined the Hunter Association’s expedition inland. The team crossed the Black Rock Belt, where encounters with enormous beasts left Joey wondering how they survived in the desolate region.

  • The fleet departed with selected Kakin royals, while Joey learned that Fugetsu, Kacho, Momoze, Woble, and the Eighth Queen had stayed inside Knov’s space.
  • Knov explained that the Black Whale 1 could not return soon, and Joey struggled to find a safe place for the Princes until Kurapika offered to take them with Biscuit.
  • Kurapika and Biscuit chose to return toward Kakin with the Princes, while Joey joined the Hunter Association’s inland expedition.
  • Cheadle organized the expedition into squads, and Joey used his En to cover the team as they set out across the Black Rock Belt.
  • Gel collected a sample from a giant cricket monster after it was killed, while the team continued past more enormous beasts and insects.
  • By evening, the team remained in the Black Rock Belt, and Joey wondered how its ferocious creatures survived in such a desolate place.

Ch. 341The teams, the Black Rock Belt by night, and courage

Ging, Pariston, and several other teams followed the Hunter Association into the Black Rock Belt as Joey considered the dangers of crossing the Imaginary Continent. On his first night there, Joey watched the wilderness and reflected on the courage it would take for humanity to settle it.

  • Ging and Pariston led Beyond's elite team inland, while Pariston questioned an armored officer for information.
  • List, Dwun, Ida, Elena, and Razor's group discussed building a game world on the Imaginary Continent and considered recruiting Joey.
  • Chrollo continued pursuing Hisoka and Joey with the Phantom Troupe's few remaining members, while Hisoka traveled with Illumi, Zigg, and Kalluto in the Zoldyck Family's team.
  • The Hunter Association stopped among the rocks at night, and Botobai had Hunters carve caves for shelter.
  • Joey volunteered for the night watch and observed the moonlit land, where beasts hunted in packs and enormous creatures shook the ground.

Ch. 342Wilderness, Ferocious Beasts, and Scales

Joey and Cluck observed the strange food chain in the Black Rock Belt, then continued into the wilderness and captured a scaled beast for experiments. The beast’s scales could store life energy and conceal Nen, raising Joey’s suspicions about V5, while Leorio joined the examination with something he seemed eager to tell Joey.

  • Joey and Cluck watched fish fall from the sky as insects, giant birds, and swift beasts preyed on one another, and Joey secretly captured insects for Cluck to study.
  • Joey sensed the underground insects retreating, then traveled with the team from the Black Rock Belt into a wasteland filled with enormous, docile, scaled beasts.
  • Joey asked Cheadle for permission, knocked one of the beasts unconscious, and dragged it back to the group to investigate its scales.
  • Joey and Cluck discovered that the scales absorbed and stored life energy, potentially concealing the Nen of anyone wearing armor made from them, and Joey wondered whether V5 had hidden Nen users.
  • Joey and Cluck began experiments with equipment from Knov, and Leorio joined them, appearing to have something he wanted to tell Joey.

Ch. 343Cluck, Black Dragon Descendants? Leorio

Joey and Cluck examined scales from a powerful beast and learned they could absorb Nen, though the material also risked draining its wearer. Joey began experimenting with the scales as Nen storage and explosives, then reassured Leorio that Kurapika was safe with Hunters on the coast and warned Leorio to strengthen himself for the Dark Continent.

  • Joey and Cluck butchered the beast, and Gel, Buhara, and Menchi checked and prepared its meat for the Hunters.
  • Cluck explained that the scales resembled those of the Black Dragon and that its descendants might still inhabit the Imaginary Continent.
  • Joey found that the scales absorbed Nen until they overheated and burst, then began engraving God Script on them to test their use as storage vessels and bombs.
  • Leorio asked Joey about Kurapika, and Joey told him Kurapika was on the coast with other Hunters and would return to the Black Whale 1.
  • Joey warned Leorio that his aura was weak, but Leorio insisted he could fight as a Professional Hunter before going to help Cluck.

Ch. 344Swarms, bird cries, and magical beasts!

Joey and the team discovered that Monster Birds’ cries triggered underground Monster Insects to swarm them, suggesting a rule-based pursuit. As the team fought back, a powerful fire-breathing magical beast appeared and attacked the insects, leaving its purpose unclear.

  • Joey realized that he could use God Script to seal the life energy stored in the scales, improving his research.
  • A massive Monster Insect swarm attacked the team, forcing them to shelter in Knov’s Hide and Seek before moving on.
  • Joey detected Monster Insects tracking the team underground, killed several, and learned that more kept emerging as they traveled.
  • Monster Birds’ cries triggered another surge of insects, and Joey and the others charged toward the birds while Knov sheltered the Crossing the Great Lake Commission’s members.
  • Joey killed a Monster Bird with Wind Blades as a fire dragon-like magical beast appeared and unleashed flames on the Monster Insects.

Ch. 345Fire Dragon, Flock of Birds, and Drawing Out the Swarm Again

Joey and the Hunter Association faced a seemingly endless Monster Insect swarm while a fire dragon battled the birds and insects. After the Association withdrew, Joey used bird cries to lure the fire dragon back into the fight, hoping its attack would help expose the hidden source of the swarm.

  • The fire dragon attacked the Monster Insects, killing birds that challenged it, while the Hunter Association sheltered and prepared to retreat.
  • Joey reasoned that contact with him, Cluck, or Leorio might have drawn the swarm, and Knov instructed the three to split from the team and use Hide and Seek if pursued.
  • Cheadle reported that there were no insects below five hundred meters, leading Joey to suspect a Conjurer was creating the swarm with an ability.
  • Ginta led the Hunter Association members through the swarm as the fire dragon fought, and Knov left Joey, Cluck, and Leorio a marked route to Hide and Seek.
  • As bird cries faded, fewer insects emerged and the fire dragon began to leave, so Joey used Weather Report to recreate the flock's cries and draw the insects back out.
  • The renewed cries brought the Monster Insects surging from the ground, and the fire dragon turned back to attack them.

Ch. 346Wearing Them Down, Making a Move, and Doing Both

Joey and Cluck used the swarm’s limits and the fire dragon’s fatigue to launch a coordinated attack, grounding the dragon and letting the insects overwhelm it. Joey waited above the battlefield, watching to see whether the weakened Insect Creator would appear.

  • Joey deduced that the swarm’s creator had limited aura and that birdsong could lure the insects out, while controlling sound, scent, and visibility kept the group safe.
  • As the fire dragon weakened and the swarm’s growth slowed, Joey and Cluck decided to act against the dragon.
  • Cluck created a giant man-eating flower while Joey’s Weather Nen Beast chilled the fire dragon with rain, struck its wing with lightning, and prevented it from flying.
  • Joey’s Heartbreaker Attack Chariots exploded against the dragon as it fell into the swarm, which engulfed it and forced the birdsong and new insect production to stop.
  • Joey kept the fire dragon trapped beneath the insects and watched for the weakened Insect Creator to reveal itself.

Ch. 347Roaring, not daring to roar, trolls

Joey, Cluck, and Leorio defeated the Fire Dragon by trapping it in extreme cold, but they could not determine whether the Insect Creator was still following them. As the trio headed back toward the Hunter Association, trolls attacked the insect wall and the unfamiliar human presence Joey had sensed disappeared.

  • Joey and Cluck combined Weather Report’s hail and Cluck’s plants to trap and freeze the Fire Dragon, killing the remaining insects in the process.
  • Joey and Cluck collected materials from the thawing Fire Dragon while Leorio urged them to consider whether the Insect Creator was still pursuing them.
  • Joey sensed an unfamiliar human nearby and decided the trio should rejoin the Hunter Association without contacting their pursuers.
  • Joey, Cluck, and Leorio flew toward the Hunter Association, but the person Joey had sensed vanished before he could identify them.
  • The trio saw trolls smash at the insect wall, and Cluck explained that the trolls were strong, regenerative savage humanoids with Magical Beast blood.

Ch. 348Explosion experiment: on magical beasts and expansion

Joey tested his explosive scales on the Fire Dragon’s corpse and continued traveling across the Imaginary Continent with Cluck and Leorio, studying magical beasts and gathering useful materials. After Menchi and Buhara arrived, their party expanded to five.

  • Joey triggered an explosion in the Fire Dragon’s corpse using scales charged with life energy, and he and his companions continued trailing the Hunter Association party.
  • Joey experimented on Trolls and discussed magical beasts with Cluck, while Leorio objected to Joey treating himself as a standard of strength.
  • Joey encountered a mud Tyrannosaurus, watched Ancient Pterosaurs carry Troll corpses, and suspected the hidden Insect Creator was still following them.
  • On the thirteenth day, Joey’s group spotted a Unicorn, which fled before Cluck could approach it.
  • Joey collected dragon-scale armor and weapons, gave the armor to Leorio and a blade to Cluck, and found the Fire Dragon’s liver far tastier than its meat.
  • Menchi and Buhara arrived, expanding the party to five.

Ch. 349Shipbuilding on the Coast and Mikhail's Surprise

Joey’s group crossed the Imaginary Continent and joined the Hunter Association at the coast, where they built and concealed a ship for the voyage ahead. Meanwhile, Mikhail’s team waited for the Zoldyck Family and Ging’s companions, but when they failed to appear by daybreak, he boarded the submarine with Ging and Pariston.

  • Joey and his companions reached the ruins of an ancient civilization, then continued across the Imaginary Continent while Joey manufactured supplies and trained Leorio.
  • Joey’s group crossed the continent a month later and rejoined the Hunter Association at a reef-lined coast filled with enormous sea beasts.
  • Three Conjuration users built a ship, and God Script users concealed it with linked Emission Nen as Cheadle scheduled the departure for the next morning.
  • Beyond’s Team brought a submarine out of a mirror, and Ging and Pariston boarded it with Mikhail.
  • The Phantom Troupe arrived and sought passage, but the Zoldyck Family and Ging’s other companions did not appear by daybreak, so Mikhail boarded the submarine with Ging and Pariston.

Ch. 350The last stop, the gate, and the Gatekeeper

Joey and the Hunter Association reached the Dark Gate, where the Gatekeeper prepared to open the way to the Dark Continent. As the opening approached, the Zoldyck Family, Hisoka, Kakin’s princes and soldiers, and Ging and Pariston arrived, setting the stage for a tense departure.

  • Joey’s ship reached the island with the enormous Dark Gate, and Cheadle and Piyon explained that Lake Mobius trapped travelers who did not pass through it.
  • Joey met the immensely powerful Gatekeeper and learned from Cheadle that the gate would open in two days.
  • Joey observed the gate and considered how Ging and others might sneak through while the Hunter Association arranged who would enter and who would stay behind.
  • The Zoldyck Family members, Hisoka, and the Greed Island team arrived by boat, followed by Kakin soldiers carrying the First, Second, and Ninth Princes.
  • A fleet approached at the Gatekeeper’s summons, and Ging and Pariston appeared aboard an enormous submarine as the Gatekeeper beckoned to them too.

Ch. 351Opening the gate, the Gatekeeper, this man was so strong!

The Dark Gate opened, and Joey and the other teams faced the Gatekeeper’s Nen pressure before crossing onto the Dark Continent. Beyond was freed from his restraints after the crossing, then shattered the attacking lizard monster’s claw with a single punch.

  • The Gatekeeper opened the Dark Gate as corpses animated by postmortem Nen entered, and his escalating pressure tested those trying to approach.
  • Joey advanced through the pressure while Botobai and Ginta shielded the Crossing the Great Lake Commission officials; Hisoka stopped to speak with the Gatekeeper and received an object from him.
  • A giant lizard monster attacked the gate, but the Gatekeeper hurled a golden spear through the opening and struck its eye, allowing Joey and the others to emerge onto the Dark Continent.
  • Cheadle’s group crossed the gate, and Beyond’s allies freed him by breaking his Nen handcuffs while Mizaistom stopped Saiyuu from attacking him.
  • After the gate closed, the wounded lizard monster attacked the newcomers, and Beyond appeared beneath its claw and smashed it apart with one punch.

Ch. 352Dark Continent, cooperation, sea of trees

Beyond agreed to cooperate with Cheadle while retaining freedom to pursue his own goals, and the combined group headed for the Ancient Labyrinth City. As they entered the sea of trees, they faced dangerous creatures and injuries, until Beyond and Zigg stopped the group and warned that night was coming.

  • Beyond killed the giant beast, then persuaded Cheadle to cooperate rather than leave the expedition.
  • Joey agreed to travel with Zigg, and Hunters led by Razor joined the group while Kakin's team and the Phantom Troupe headed into the Dark Continent separately.
  • Joey realized all the groups were bound for the Ancient Labyrinth City, and Cheadle and Beyond's Team discussed their plans before setting out toward the sea of trees.
  • The group found signs that Kakin's party had been attacked, then entered the dark forest, where spiders and other dangerous creatures ambushed them.
  • Joey treated injured Hunters with Gold Experience and became a closely protected member of the expedition.
  • Three hours into the forest, Beyond and Zigg stopped the group and warned that night was coming.

Ch. 353Mist, screams, and an unexpected calamity

Joey’s party crossed a mist-shrouded Forest Sea where nocturnal fog left animal corpses and daytime beasts attacked with unnatural fury. After hearing Kakin’s party scream and finding blood but few bodies, they encountered the Five Great Calamities’ human-rearing beast Pap, which turned people into smiling, shriveled figures as the survivors fled.

  • Joey’s party camped in the Forest Sea, then found mist-like insect and animal corpses that dispersed when touched.
  • Joey suspected the mist drained life, and the party fought frenzied beasts for hours before their behavior returned to normal.
  • Joey’s party heard Kakin’s people screaming in the night and found blood and scattered clothing the next morning, while Beyond and Cheadle slowed their advance instead of catching up.
  • A Mercenary fired at Pap, and a branch-like appendage hoisted him up as a smiling, shriveled figure.
  • Beyond ran while Cheadle fled with Knov, who dropped Joey’s bombs, and Joey joined the retreat as more people began to shrivel and smile.

Ch. 354Pap, the Human-Rearing Beast: No Solution, Exploration

Joey discovered that Pap could infect people with unnatural happiness and drain their vitality, then used Bites the Dust to escape a deadly encounter and return to camp. With Pap confirmed ahead, the team paused to scout the area while Joey arranged to monitor it using hummingbirds created by Gold Experience.

  • Joey reasoned that Pap's attacks might be triggered by entering its territory, then used First Bomb to destroy a cluster of shriveled bodies, only for more Pap to appear elsewhere.
  • As Pap surrounded the team and Mizaistom began to shrivel, Mizaistom threw Joey an ordinary person, allowing Joey to trigger Bites the Dust and return to camp.
  • Joey told Ging that Pap lay ahead and that his First Bomb could eliminate individual Pap, while Ging confirmed the team had been overwhelmed in the reversed events.
  • Cheadle heard Joey's warning, and she and Ging agreed to hold position while Nen Beasts investigated the area ahead.
  • Joey sent Gold Experience hummingbirds, including one carrying a camera, to scout and went to Piyon's tent to use her computer to watch the feed.

Ch. 355Pap's appearance, a detour, and the fog

Joey and the team investigated Pap, learned that it occupied a dark alternate space, and failed to damage it with a bomb. After choosing a safer route through the Forest Sea, they encountered unusually dense fog, and Joey discovered that the mist was consuming living creatures and turning them into mist.

  • Joey used camera hummingbirds and Botobai's Nen Beast to reveal Pap's tree-like form and emerald eyes, though Pap's branches destroyed the cameras and Nen Beast.
  • The team tried bombing Pap, but the bomb exploded at the boundary of its dark space; flames burned some shriveled humans, while more emerged from the darkness.
  • Piyon mapped the Forest Sea as the group gathered information, and the team spotted traces of Kakin's group before deciding not to follow their route.
  • The group traveled cautiously for days, then stopped as thick fog rapidly covered the Forest Sea and kept everyone on watch through the night.
  • After the fog dispersed, the Forest Sea was eerily quiet, and Joey found that mist in a bottle was draining ants' life energy and turning their bodies into mist.
