Background / History

Childhood and Training

Gordon loses both parents early and lives alone in Kokoto Village for years. He begins formal hunter training under Ernest at fifteen, building experience against creatures such as Great Bullfango, Blue Velociprey, and Popo. By seventeen, he dreams of hunting Rathalos rather than recording ordinary prey in his Hunter’s Notes 1 9 13.

Qualification and the Bullfango King

During his final assessment, Gordon continues tracking a Great Bullfango after dark despite knowing that returning to camp would be safer. He kills it but neglects a thorough inspection of his surroundings, leaving him exposed when a Bulldrome—the Bullfango King—appears. The monster overwhelms him, and Beefsteak’s Felyne tribe rescues him by cart 2 3 4.

Rather than abandon the hunt, Gordon gathers materials, prepares medicine, and disguises poisonous and paralysis mushrooms as edible bait. After his Hunter’s Knife shatters during the ensuing battle, he uses the monster’s broken tusk as an improvised Great Sword and beats it to death. He returns to Kokoto injured but victorious, completes his assessment, and receives medical care and remedial instruction in hunting tools 5 6 9 10.

Great Sword Training and Porkchop

Ernest encourages Gordon to replace the Sword and Shield, which cannot fully exploit his strength. Gordon chooses the Great Sword after instinctively delivering a powerful shouldered strike during a weapon trial. He commissions a Buster Sword from his own materials and rapidly learns its basic techniques under Ernest 10 11.

Porkchop, Beefsteak’s eldest son, then arrives to become Gordon’s hunting Palico. Having witnessed the Bullfango King’s defeat, he chooses Gordon as his trainer. They sign a contract, share Gordon’s home, and begin hunting together. Weeks of quests fund Blue Velociprey armor for both partners; throughout autumn, Gordon and Ernest also bring back meat for Kokoto’s winter stores 12 13 17.

Promotion and the Rathalos Defeat

While protecting a caravan from the Blue Velociprey King, Gordon deliberately allows the pack leader to summon reinforcements, drawing nearby monsters away from the retreating travelers. Porkchop escorts the caravan while Gordon holds the monsters’ attention. Gordon eventually tracks down and kills the leader, earning two-star rank 22 23.

His fascination with Rathalos leads him to accept an 8,800z wyvern-egg gathering quest despite Ernest’s objections. Gordon and Porkchop steal an egg after a Rathian leaves the nest, but a Rathalos intercepts them near camp. The egg breaks, and Gordon suffers venomous talon wounds and fireball injuries before Porkchop drags him into the river 23 24 26 27.

The escape leaves Gordon with more than ten fractures, burns, lingering toxins, and a lung infection. After a month of bed rest, he apologizes to Porkchop and Ernest for his recklessness. He does not consider quitting; instead, he resumes training and replaces his ruined armor with an Alloy Armor Set 28.

Move to Minegarde

Ernest and the village chief explain that Kokoto’s limited quests cannot support Gordon’s continued growth. Gordon and Porkchop choose Minegarde as a familiar stepping stone before eventually visiting Dondurma. They leave with gifts from the villagers, and Gordon promises to return when he is strong enough to kill Rathalos 28 29.

In Minegarde, Gordon transfers his registration to the local Hunter Gathering Hall and settles into its inexpensive lodging. He reunites with Hayata, one of the travelers he rescued, and joins her teacher Amos on a Shakalaka subjugation quest 34 36.

Amos’s instruction helps Gordon refine his Great Sword technique. During an unexpected encirclement, Amos saves him from the King Shakalaka while Gordon fights the surrounding creatures and begins to control his weapon’s momentum. After completing the quest, Gordon receives 4,300z and takes his damaged Buster Sword to Minegarde’s workshop for repairs 41 44 45 49.

Appearance

  • Large, muscular build: Broad shoulders, a wide chest, and pronounced muscles make him resemble a wall by the end of his first winter as a hunter 18.
  • Youthful face: His face remains noticeably young despite a physique that causes others to mistake him for an adult 18 36.
  • Work-hardened hands: Thick knuckles and heavy calluses reflect years of training 5.
  • Everyday armor: By his time in Minegarde, he habitually wears his hunting armor even outside quests 49.

Personality

Gordon is ambitious, direct, and strongly drawn to close combat. He prefers attacking to the slow, defensive approach associated with the Lance and Gunlance, and has no interest in ranged weapons. His early eagerness repeatedly overrides his judgment: he hunts at night unnecessarily, neglects safety checks, and pursues the egg quest chiefly to see Rathalos 2 10 24.

His confidence is backed by persistent work. Daily exercise becomes as routine as washing his face, and months of ordinary gathering and hunting quests gradually temper his restlessness. He welcomes Amos’s criticism because he values the chance to learn from an experienced hunter 17 34 40.

Gordon treats Porkchop as a comrade rather than a subordinate, asks whether becoming his partner is genuinely Porkchop’s own wish, and encourages him to speak as an equal. He also accepts danger to protect strangers, considering the caravan’s safety part of his duty as a hunter 12 22 36.

Defeat makes him more reflective without extinguishing his determination. Following the Rathalos encounter, he acknowledges his mistakes and apologizes rather than blaming his partner or abandoning hunting 28.

Abilities & Skills

Exceptional Strength and Endurance

Gordon’s natural strength is the chief reason Ernest recommends heavy weapons 10.

  • Trains with a millstone during his teens and later lifts an enormous stone block for exercise 10 18.
  • Wields a roughly hundred-kilogram broken tusk to kill the Bullfango King 9 10.
  • Develops enough endurance and skill to fight several Blue Velociprey at once, although sustained combat still drains him 22.
  • Is not stronger than every monster: the King Shakalaka knocks his Great Sword aside in a direct clash 44.

Great Sword Combat

Gordon quickly learns basic Great Sword handling, then develops his technique through actual hunts 11 17.

  • Heavy slashes: Uses overhead, horizontal, and rising attacks; his Buster Sword can split a Blue Velociprey in two 15 17 40.
  • Charged Slash: Shows an instinctive affinity for the Great Sword’s shouldered power-gathering stance during his weapon trial 10 11.
  • Sword guard: Uses the blade’s broad flat as a shield against bites and tail strikes 16 17.
  • Iron Mountain Lean: Delivers shoulder-and-elbow body checks; later drives his shoulder into the blade’s flat to turn it into a forceful shield-like attack 16 41.
  • Momentum control: Progresses from linking swings through their existing momentum to guiding the blade with fine adjustments throughout his body 17 41 45.
  • Limits: Drawing the weapon restricts his movement, and missed attacks can leave long recovery openings. Strong Charged Slash and True Charged Slash remain future goals, not mastered techniques 11 15 17.

Tracking and Fieldcraft

Gordon uses environmental clues and monster behavior to prepare favorable encounters 2 6 38.

  • Judges track freshness by examining the earth around footprints 2.
  • Approaches quietly with low, controlled steps and hides downwind when setting bait 2 6.
  • Uses Paintball pigment and scent to estimate a marked monster’s location and distance 5 6.
  • Reads soil moisture and recent rainfall from grass roots 38.
  • Uses an Aptonoth carcass to attract Blue Velociprey 15.

Hunting Tools and Medicine

Initially reliant on his knife, Gordon expands his use of tools after Ernest’s remedial lessons 9.

  • Combines herbs and blue mushrooms into basic Potions 5.
  • Applies poisonous mushroom juice to his knife and prepares disguised poison-and-paralysis bait 6.
  • Uses Mega Potions, Rations, and Whetstones to recover and maintain fighting effectiveness during a hunt 23.
  • Uses an Antidote and Flash Bomb during the Rathalos escape; afterward, he credits Ernest’s insistence on carrying them with helping him survive 27 28.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Hunter’s Knife and round bone shield — His apprentice equipment. The shield is damaged by the Bullfango King, and the knife ultimately shatters; Gordon preserves its fragments as mementos 2 4 9 10.
  • Bullfango King’s broken tusk — An improvised finishing weapon and trophy brought back to Kokoto Village 9.
  • Buster Sword — A steel Great Sword forged using iron ore, earth crystals, and ice crystal. It has green sharpness, a broad hooked blade, and five retractable sickle-shaped cutting blades. Ernest considers it suitable through three-star rank; Gordon later seeks repairs for a deformed grab hook 11 13 14 49.
  • Hunter armor — Basic protective equipment used during his apprenticeship and earliest Great Sword hunts 6 13 15.
  • Blue Velociprey Armor Set — Tanned dark-gray hide reinforced with scales and metal plating. Offers two to three times the protection of basic hunter armor, but is damaged beyond worthwhile repair by Rathalos 17 28.
  • Alloy Armor Set — Replaces his ruined Blue Velociprey set. Made chiefly from earth crystal, iron ore, and machalite ore, with some Blue Velociprey hide; provides comparable defense at greater weight 28.
  • Hunter’s Notes — Records his hunter credentials and receives the hollow-star authorization in Minegarde 5 34.
  • Ancient Coin — A foreign coin Hayata shares with him after the Shakalaka hunt, joking that she is sharing her good luck 47 50.

Relationships

  • Ernest — Instructor and father figure. Trains Gordon, oversees his recovery, teaches him Great Sword basics, and encourages him to leave Kokoto for better opportunities 9 11 24 28 29.
  • Porkchop — Contracted hunting Palico, housemate, and trusted partner. Chooses Gordon after witnessing the Bullfango King’s defeat and later saves his life during the Rathalos escape 12 13 27 28.
  • Beefsteak — Felyne rescuer and Porkchop’s father. Gordon pays the rescue fee, thanks the tribe with felvine, and welcomes Beefsteak’s son as a partner 4 12.
  • Amos — Seven-star hunter and field mentor. Teaches Gordon finer combat principles, saves him from the King Shakalaka, and prompts him to consider hunters’ place within nature 36 41 44 47 48.
  • Hayata — Caravan survivor and Amos’s apprentice. Thanks Gordon for rescuing the travelers, hunts alongside him, and gives him the Ancient Coin 36 38 47.
  • Kokoto Village Chief — Supports Gordon’s departure and provides a handwritten recommendation. Gordon only later learns that he is the legendary Kokoto Hero 29 33 34.
  • Oshura — Minegarde huntress who helps Gordon find his way around the gathering hall. He awkwardly corrects his habit of calling her “ma’am” to “Senior Oshura” 31 32 50.
  • Tiji — Gathering hall receptionist who handles his registration and hollow-star authorization. She later apologizes for flawed quest information and promises to check documents more carefully 32 34 49.
  • Vantikasya Mo Lagoma Tiratina — Minegarde’s gathering hall Chairwoman. Welcomes his transfer and authorizes his conditional participation in three-star quests 32 34.
