Background / History

Becoming Gordon’s Partner

Porkchop was gathering in the forest when he witnessed Gordon kill a Bullfango King with its own tusk. Convinced that Gordon would become a legendary hunter, he wanted to train with him independently of his father’s recommendation. Beefsteak subsequently sent him to Kokoto Village to find Gordon 12.

His arrival was intimidating: the Blacksmith frightened him, and the village chief’s puzzling response left him nearly in tears. A passing woman finally guided him to the training grounds. Gordon, whose life Beefsteak had saved, welcomed the request but first confirmed that Porkchop genuinely wanted the partnership. They signed their contract with Gordon’s bloody thumbprint and Porkchop’s bloody paw print 12.

Porkchop moved into a small bedroom in Gordon’s house. By dawn the following morning, he was already outside practicing with his Felyne Pickaxe, establishing the training routine they would share 13.

Early Hunts in Kokoto Village

Porkchop’s first quest as a hunting Felyne targeted Blue Velociprey, pack predators that regularly injured or killed members of Felyne communities. Although nervous, he chose to fight beside Gordon rather than remain only a lookout. His timely pickaxe strike disrupted a flanking attack, helping him realize that the creatures which haunted his nightmares were not unbeatable 14 15 16.

Their repeated hunts improved their coordination and funded new equipment. Porkchop accompanied Gordon on gathering and slaying quests through summer and autumn, eventually replacing his novice armor and weapon 17.

During the Blue Velociprey King urgent quest, Porkchop helped distract the monsters attacking a caravan. Gordon then entrusted him with escorting the survivors southeast while he fought the king. Porkchop returned to camp after sunset and helped stitch and bandage Gordon’s severe chest wound 21 23.

Rathalos Encounter and Rescue

On the wyvern-egg gathering quest, Porkchop scouted the nest and warned Gordon when he heard the Rathian returning. The pair hid with their scent masked by wyvern droppings, then endured an overnight wait before taking an egg and fleeing. Porkchop warned Gordon of another approaching threat near the riverbank, where a Rathalos intercepted them 25 26.

When Rathalos venom left Gordon unable to escape, Porkchop sounded his horn to divert the monster long enough for Gordon to drink an antidote. He then burrowed underground to avoid being bitten. After a fireball left Gordon nearly helpless, Porkchop resurfaced and dragged him into the river 27.

The current carried them almost two kilometers downstream before washing them ashore at a gentler bend. Porkchop remained conscious and sent a distress signal that brought nearby Felynes, who carried both of them out of the mountains. Once Gordon could walk again, he formally apologized to Porkchop for his recklessness 28.

Life in Minegarde

Porkchop agreed to accompany Gordon wherever he went. They chose Minegarde City, received an affectionate village farewell, and traveled there with a merchant over nearly ten days. They later settled into a room at the Hunter Gathering Hall 29 31 34.

At the hall, Porkchop recognized Hayata as the girl from the rescued caravan. Their reunion led to a joint Shakalaka hunt with Hayata and her teacher, Amos. During the subsequent encirclement by Shakalaka, Porkchop protected Hayata while Gordon attacked the swarm and Amos confronted its king 35 36 44 45.

Appearance

Porkchop has glossy cream-and-gold fur and an oval golden patch on his belly resembling a fried pork chop—the source of his name 13 35.

Personality

Initially timid and excessively formal, Porkchop insists on calling Gordon “Master Gordon” even after being invited to speak as an equal. His nerves show through trembling whiskers, a rigid tail, and his tendency to hide behind Gordon when confronted by intimidating people 12 13.

His caution does not prevent him from acting courageously. He chooses frontline support during his first hunt and later suppresses his terror of Rathalos because Gordon needs help. His loyalty is practical: he distracts threats, guards vulnerable companions, and takes responsibility for getting Gordon to safety 15 27 28 45.

Porkchop is diligent rather than merely enthusiastic. He trains before Gordon wakes and accepts demanding conditioning exercises. Away from hunts, he can be blunt or playful: his attempt to console Gordon about poor loot only earns him an irritated head rub, and he firmly refuses Gordon’s proposed half-hour soak in the hot bath 13 18 47 49.
