Background / History
Childhood in Minegarde
Hayata lost both parents in an accident when she was barely two or three years old. Her paternal uncle, Pine, adopted her and raised her as his own child. Her memories of her parents faded, and Pine became her most important—and only remaining—family 19 21.
Because Pine spent at least nine months each year traveling for trade, Hayata usually remained in Minegarde with a nanny. He indulged her with expensive dresses despite living frugally himself. His long-term plan was to buy a two-story house with a garden in Dondurma and secure a comfortable future for her 19.
Caravan Attack and Hunter Aspirations
For her fourteenth birthday, Hayata asked to accompany Pine on a trade journey. Near the West Schrade Hills, the caravan was attacked by a Blue Velociprey King and two Blue Velociprey. Pine hid her among the cargo, but she emerged when a monster knocked him unconscious and threatened his throat 19 20 21.
Despite trembling with fear, Hayata stood between Pine and the monster. She dodged its bite and struck its neck with a short sword, but her limited strength inflicted only a minor wound. Gordon and Porkchop intervened before its next attack. Watching Gordon hold off the king while the caravan escaped inspired her desire for the strength to protect her loved ones 21.
The caravan abandoned its journey and returned to Minegarde after suffering deaths, injuries, and lost cargo. Hayata insisted on becoming a hunter for more than a month, resisting Pine's persuasion and even confinement to her room. He finally relented, choosing his trusted childhood friend Amos as her mentor rather than sending her to the Hunter's Guild training camp 30 31.
Metabe Forest Expedition
Hayata reunited with Gordon and Porkchop at the Minegarde Hunter Gathering Hall and finally thanked them for the rescue. Amos arranged a joint Shakalaka hunt so she could experience the hunting grounds under supervision 35 36.
The expedition tested her beyond combat. Forest travel exhausted her, and the sight of mutilated Shakalaka corpses nearly made her vomit. She nevertheless continued learning and completed her first kill before the party was surrounded by Shakalaka led by their king 39 40 43 44.
After surviving the battle, Hayata witnessed Amos's full-strength Long Sword techniques and became captivated by the weapon. On the return journey, her view that humanity's relationship with nature included coexistence pleased Amos, who taught both young hunters why hunting required respect for ecological balance 46 47 48.
Appearance
Hayata is slender, with long, soft chestnut-brown hair and pale green eyes compared to new sprouts 19 21 30.
- Everyday clothing: Usually wears dresses; her pearl-white skirt is stained with monster blood during the caravan rescue 21 30.
- Training clothing: Changes into a cotton shirt and trousers for freedom of movement when visiting Amos 30.
- Hunting outfit: Wears the beginner Hunter armor set, including a helmet and protective leather greaves 38 39.
Personality
Hayata is lively, mischievous, and unusually agile, but Pine considers her fundamentally sweet and obedient. Before her determination to become a hunter, she rarely acted willfully or caused trouble for him or her nanny 19 30.
Her courage does not mean an absence of fear. She trembles while defending Pine and struggles with nausea around corpses, yet persists when protecting family or pursuing her chosen vocation. She also finishes her first ration despite its hardness and saltiness, convincing Amos that she can endure a hunter's hardships 21 38 40.
She asks questions readily and draws connections between lessons, notably asking why elemental damage matters less for heavy weapons. Amos regards her as talented and strong-minded enough to inherit his legacy 37 38.
Hayata is generous toward her companions. After finding valuable loot, she gives Gordon her Ancient Coin as a way of sharing her good luck 47.
Abilities & Skills
Sword and Shield
Her early fighting emphasizes survival rather than damage, with improvisation compensating for limited training 45.
- Dodges a Blue Velociprey's bite and strikes its neck before formally beginning hunter training, though the blow barely wounds it 21.
- Uses both sword and shield defensively when she cannot reliably hit agile Shakalaka 45.
- Kicks small enemies backward with reinforced greaves, creating space rather than trying to kill them 45.
- Still lacks reliable knowledge of vital spots, making her first Mushroom Pig kill prolonged and messy 44.
Fieldcraft and Hunting Knowledge
Hayata receives practical instruction from Amos rather than demonstrating independent mastery 38 43.
- Studies elements, monster weaknesses, and the importance of attack frequency for elemental weapons 38.
- Learns how environmental clues can reveal soil humidity and recent rainfall 38.
- Receives lessons on precise sidesteps and predicting enemy movements 41.
- Learns to find directions and water sources, including using sun-facing fern growth for orientation 43.
- Begins gathering materials, but remains uncomfortable handling bloody remains 47.
Physical Limits
Her agility exceeds what Pine expects of an ordinary girl her age, but her strength and endurance remain undeveloped 19.
- Cannot lift Gordon's Buster Sword 36.
- Needs breaks during her first journey through dense forest 39.
- Requires help keeping pace during the retreat from the Shakalaka pursuit 44.
- Retains an ordinary person's stamina and reaches exhaustion after forest travel and combat 45.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Hunter's Knife — Her beginner melee weapon, carried horizontally behind her waist 38 39.
- Small Round Shield — Used alongside the knife, particularly to block Shakalaka attacks 39 43 45.
- Hunter armor set — Lightweight beginner protection; its stiff leather greaves support her ankles and knees and shield her from vegetation 39.
- Reinforced greaves — Hardened leather and iron plates make her defensive kicks effective at knocking back small attackers 45.
- Ancient Coin — An antique foreign coin found on a Shakalaka and given to Gordon. Amos estimates its value at around 1,000z; the Minegarde workshop owner later offers Gordon 6,000z, which he refuses because it is her gift 47 50.
- Brilliant/pure crystal — Found in a second Shakalaka's pouch. Too small for equipment crafting, but valuable enough for jewelry; Amos suggests keeping it as an ornament or having Pine arrange its sale 47.
Relationships
- Pine — Paternal uncle and adoptive guardian. His devotion makes him fiercely protective, while her desire to protect him motivates her hunter aspirations 19 21 30.
- Amos — Teacher and familiar family friend; a Seven-Star Long Sword hunter. He teaches her combat, survival, and hunting ethics, and considers her a worthy potential successor 31 36 37 48.
- Gordon — Rescuer, hunting companion, and senior whom she addresses as “Senior Gordon.” He helps protect her during her first expedition and treasures the coin she gives him 21 36 44 47 50.
- Porkchop — Gordon's Palico and fellow rescuer. He recognizes her at their reunion and fights back-to-back with her against the Shakalaka swarm 21 35 45.
Notable Quotes
“No! Uncle Pine, I want to be a hunter!” 30
“A hunter's duty is to escort and safeguard human survival and development. As for the relationship between humanity and nature, the competition Senior Gordon mentioned is one aspect, but there's also coexistence, right?” 47
Trivia
- Her name means “fragrant orchid” in the northern dialect 19.
- She says she has been lucky since childhood. Finding valuable treasures in both of the first two Shakalaka corpses she processes contrasts with Gordon's mostly worthless finds; no supernatural luck ability is confirmed 47 50.
- Her first encounter with hunter rations chips a tooth, but she still finishes her portion 38.
