Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Human transformation | 2 | Previously learned to switch freely between human and dog forms under the clan elders’ guidance after accumulating sufficient demonic energy. |
| Peak Low-Level Yokai | 2 | Had mastered Wind Scar and Backlash Wave and could overwhelm ordinary Mid-Level Yokai, but neither technique produced the qualitative change needed for advancement. Identified his previous-life assumptions as a cognitive barrier. |
| Mid-Level Yokai | 19 | Comprehended his power’s true nature and condensed mist-like demonic energy into a liquid drop. His physique and energy quality improved; normal strength slightly exceeded Ringetsu’s, while his full arsenal could briefly challenge a weaker High-Level Yokai. |
| Wind-enhanced Panoply Yokai Power | 22 23 | Devoured a wind-attribute Fang Sword, increasing wind affinity, speed, agility, and Wind Scar’s strength. Could rival an ordinary High-Level Yokai while his energy lasted, without advancing to that realm. |
| Lightning enhancement | 27 | Consumed Autumn Gale’s lightning crystal. Its retained vitality triggered a large influx of spiritual energy and yielded greater benefits than the Fang Sword. |
| Further multi-attribute growth | 30 | Absorbed all four Heavenly Kings’ crystals and the Mid-Level Yokai slain by Ringetsu, bringing the number of crystal types consumed to nearly ten and substantially increasing his strength. |
| High-Level crystal absorption; realm advancement not confirmed | 34 | Killed White Bone Maru and refined his crystal, greatly enlarging and strengthening his white dog form. Still estimated that reaching High-Level Yokai would require additional accumulation; afterward absorbed five more crystals. |
| Temporary Demon Binding enhancement | 43 44 | Zi Yan’s Sword Cherry Tree merged with his heart, enabling a combined cherry-blossom secret art. The battle nearly exhausted both participants; no permanent realm advancement is stated. |
Background / History
Tōga is a transmigrator who watched Inuyasha in his previous life and recognizes himself as the future King Tōga, the Dog General. Knowing that his original counterpart died of exhaustion, he intends to change that fate rather than follow the original story unquestioningly 1 4.
Born a pureblood White Dog, he displayed exceptional talent and learned human transformation under the Dog Tribe’s elders. His scholarly behavior began in childhood and made the Dog King suspicious enough to consult the Youkai Sage. The sage confirmed that Tōga was a normal Dog Yokai and called him a “Yokai of Destiny” and the tribe’s future hope; the king kept that verdict private 2 25.
Tōga grew up alongside Ringetsu and spent more than a decade sparring with and advising her. He also cultivated a close relationship with the Grand Elder, his teacher, whose support helped secure his position within the tribe 6 12 19.
Appearance
Tōga’s initial humanoid appearance resembles a handsome thirteen- or fourteen-year-old boy; this describes his apparent age, not his actual age 1 2.
- Hair: Silver-white, reaching his waist by the battle with White Bone Maru 16 33.
- Eyes: Golden with flecked markings; shine deep blue when he uses Mind’s Eye of the Netherworld 2 6.
- Tail and clothing: A long snow-white tail drapes around his neck. His own fur forms his coat and, later, armor and robes 1 34.
- Claws: Can extend sharp claws from otherwise human fingers 2.
- True form: A snow-white yokai dog capable of becoming gigantic as his power increases 2 34.
- Demon Binding mark: Blooming cherry blossoms appear as a tattoo on his back when Zi Yan’s Sword Cherry Tree merges with him 43.
Personality
Tōga prefers preparation, reinforcements, and overwhelming advantages to heroic single combat. He considers unnecessary solo fighting irresponsible toward his troops and tribe, and uses group battles both to reduce casualties and identify promising recruits. Nevertheless, a worthy opponent such as White Bone Maru can awaken an intense appetite for battle 5 33.
He is an attentive but demanding teacher: he cooks for his patrol, corrects trainees’ movements in detail, and records knowledge for future generations, while imposing pressure on careless guards and underperforming soldiers. His educational reforms also serve a personal purpose—building capable allies so that the tribe does not depend on him until he dies of overwork 2 3 4 28.
His ambitions include tribal leadership, a powerful family, and eventual rule over other yokai. He is affectionate and teasing with Ringetsu, but privately plans for additional wives, including Izayoi. After the elders’ deaths, his earlier exhilaration gives way to a deeper awareness of mortality and a stronger desire to preserve lives 5 6 12 27 46.
Abilities & Skills
Panoply Yokai Power
Tōga names his innate energy Panoply Yokai Power, describing it as the power of all things and manifestations. Unlike most Dog Yokai’s elemental power, it can absorb other essences and reproduce their attributes 22 23.
- Devouring: Extracts and assimilates power from Fang Swords, yokai crystals, and living targets; he secretly samples Nuregarasu’s power to assess her strength 22 23 36.
- Attribute conversion: Converts his own energy into increasingly pure wind power after absorbing a wind essence 23.
- Physical growth: Absorption can strengthen both his energy and his dog body, despite his emphasis on the energy-cultivation path 34.
- Resistance and cost: Lingering consciousness can fight assimilation, consuming his mental and demonic energy. Erasing that consciousness makes the absorbed power docile 22.
- Cultivation limit: Its depth and complexity provide exceptional combat strength but make realm advancement require substantial accumulation 34.
Essence Bestowal
Tōga can give absorbed essences to others, providing an external source of elemental refinement comparable to a “spiritual root” 22 30.
- Yokai-Pattern Tomoe: Grants wind to Red Evil Ogre, fire to Prison Flame Maru, and lightning to Instant Thunder Raiga, initiating their transitions into Mid-Level Yokai 30.
- Combat knowledge: The tomoe also contain a portion of his understanding of combat, helping recipients develop suitable techniques 33.
- Wind-Thunder Jewel: Creates a combined jewel that begins soothing Nuregarasu’s severe injuries after she swallows it 49.
- Limits: Distribution depends on the essences he can obtain; possible side effects remain unknown when he begins using the ability on his subordinates 30.
Wind Scar and Backlash Wave
Tōga masters both techniques while still a Low-Level Yokai, although neither reveals the essence of his innate power 2.
- Wind Scar: Resonates with the world’s “wind veins” to create intersecting vacuum blades, using an enemy’s aura to track and cut its target 23.
- Weapon-independent use: Can release Wind Scar through his body or a weapon, including turning the five attacks of Iron-Reaver Soul-Stealer into five Wind Scars 23.
- Fine control: Adjusts its strength and releases or withdraws it with minute precision 23.
- Combat limit: White Bone Maru’s armored panther form can tear his Wind Scars apart 33.
Azure Dragon Strike
A lightning-associated sword attack that manifests an azure dragon and produces a devastating collision of power 33.
- Used to defeat and kill White Bone Maru, a High-Level Yokai 33 34.
- Appears again when Tōga intervenes in Zi Yan’s battle against the Panther Cat Great Elder 42.
Mind’s Eye of the Netherworld
A perception technique combining his five enhanced senses with his unusually keen sixth sense to form a “celestial eye” within his mind 6.
- Pierces illusions and perceives the distinctive light of life within yokai 6.
- Detects approaching High-Level enemies and powerful combatants inside Wind-Thunder Gorge 6 32.
- Places a heavy burden on him, so he initially reserves it for situations in which his instincts warn of danger 6.
Shadow-Breath Instant Movement
A stealth-movement technique developed by refining Sesshomaru’s Silent Shift and combining it with the Assassin’s Presence Concealment 5.
- Suppresses his presence while allowing extremely rapid movement that resembles teleportation 5.
- Lets him follow Winter Gale through the forest without making a sound or leaving detectable traces 5.
Claw Combat and Steel Fist
Tōga adapts techniques known from his previous life into practical Dog Tribe combat arts 4 28.
- Iron-Reaver Soul-Stealer: Channels demonic power through five fingers and claws, releasing blade-like strikes. He demonstrates it by slicing a thick tree trunk into sections and teaches its timing, energy flow, and hand positioning 4.
- Steel Fist: A heavily modified version of Tsunade’s technique that reinforces the body with yokai power, multiplying striking force and improving defense 28.
- Swordsmanship: Defends against Ringetsu’s rapid sword attacks using only his Fang Sword’s scabbard 6.
Demon Binding and Cherry Blossom Arts
Tōga combines his Panoply Yokai Power with Zi Yan’s Sword Cherry Tree, which merges through his backplate into his heart 43.
- Develops Cherry Blossom Blizzard: Chaotic Blossoms, Heavenly Wind Slash during the fusion 43.
- Uses Flower Burial, Purification of the World to restrain and destroy the Panther Cat Great Elder’s cursed black dragon 44.
- The combined battle leaves him coughing blood and nearly drained of power; Zi Yan is similarly exhausted 44.
Barriers and Cultivation Instruction
Tōga develops small utility barriers and systematic teaching methods rather than relying solely on individual talent 4 19 49.
- Creates barriers that conceal sound and auras, including one deployed through his sheathed Fang Sword during his conversation with Nuregarasu 49.
- Records breakthrough experiences, techniques, geography, and future plans in his private study 19.
- Develops Human Transformation instruction and an Iron-Reaver Soul-Stealer manual for the Dog Tribe 4 14.
- Tests a Compulsory Education Plan during travel, combining cultivation lessons with practical combat training 26 28.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Fang Sword and scabbard — An elder-gifted sword carried at his waist; used for sword techniques, defensive sparring, and utility barriers 3 6 33 49.
- Wind-attribute Fang Sword — Selected from the tribal treasury for an absorption experiment; consumed until only its hilt remained 22 23.
- Cultivation journals and private library — Kept in a protected study beneath his home. Include practical research, observations since reincarnation, and private plans concerning Ringetsu 19.
- Yokai power crystals — Resources consumed to acquire attributes and increase strength, including those of the Four Heavenly Kings and White Bone Maru 27 30 34.
Relationships
- Ringetsu — Childhood companion, sparring partner, and romantic partner whom he intends to make his principal wife. He proposes marriage after the Panther Cat Tribe’s defeat; their affection becomes explicit with a kiss at the ruined fortress. A completed wedding is not documented 6 8 12 45.
- Dog King — Sovereign and prospective father-in-law. Resists handing over Ringetsu despite valuing Tōga’s talent, eventually entrusts her safety to him, and offers guidance after the elders’ deaths 16 20 25 46.
- Dog Tribe Grand Elder — Teacher, protector, and advocate for his marriage to Ringetsu. His death profoundly affects Tōga 6 8 16 46.
- Zi Yan — Third Elder and Demon Binding partner. Her flirtatious teasing repeatedly puts him in awkward situations with Ringetsu 43 44 50.
- Red Evil Ogre — Devoted subordinate and early teaching subject. Tōga helps her achieve human form, teaches her claw combat, and grants her the Wind Tomoe 2 4 30.
- Qitian — Fellow patrol captain later transferred under Tōga’s command; leads the border ambush and helps form the core of his trained force 1 10 20 22.
- Prison Flame Maru and Instant Thunder Raiga — Subordinates granted fire and lightning essences; serve as messengers warning the Dog King after White Bone Maru’s death 30 34.
- Nuregarasu — Karasu Tengu chieftain whom he considers a potential Great Yokai and valuable ally. Offers her a restorative Wind-Thunder Jewel while seeking to bring her tribe under his command 36 49.
- White Bone Maru — Oyakata’s son and Personal Guard Captain; killed by Tōga and absorbed as a major source of power 33 34.
- Oyakata — Enemy Leopard Cat Lord. Tōga anticipates retaliation after killing White Bone Maru and avoids lingering outside Dog Tribe territory 34 37.
- Sesshomaru and Inuyasha — Sons of the original Dog General whom Tōga regards as his future children. Their techniques inspire several of his adaptations; neither is shown born in the supplied events 4 5 6.
- Izayoi — Intended future second wife in Tōga’s private plans; no meeting is documented 12.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Border Patrol and the Four Heavenly Kings
Tōga begins as a patrol captain on the snowy Dog–Leopard Cat border. While guarding an outpost, he develops transformation instruction, scouts the enemy, and requests reinforcements rather than risking an isolated fight. During the Leopard Cat assault, he exposes their concealed approach by shattering Spring Gale’s White Mist Barrier with a howl. Qitian’s forces ambush the attackers, Ringetsu kills Winter Gale, and Tōga dispels Spring Gale’s illusions while safeguarding his fighters with precise attacks 1 4 5 10 12.
Wind-Thunder Gorge and Army Development
After reaching Mid-Level Yokai, Tōga secures twenty Dog Yokai for systematic training. During the journey to Wind-Thunder Gorge, he strengthens himself through absorption and grants elemental essences to selected recruits. He intercepts and kills White Bone Maru, then helps bring the surviving Karasu Tengu out of the gorge under Dog Tribe protection. Ringetsu’s recognition of him as a general facilitates negotiations with Nuregarasu 19 20 26 30 33 34 36 37.
Defense of the Dog Tribe Fortress
Following the deaths of the Grand Elder and Second Elder, the Panther Cats breach the fortress. Tōga joins Zi Yan against the Panther Cat Great Elder and uses Demon Binding to defeat his final cursed-dragon attack. Victory leaves both exhausted. The sight of the fallen elders afterward turns Tōga’s attention toward saving lives rather than merely increasing his strength 40 42 43 44 46.
Recruiting the Karasu Tengu
Tōga concludes that faster messengers could have prevented the elders from leaving the fortress to confront an already-dead White Bone Maru. Until he develops a better communication system, the flying Karasu Tengu are therefore essential recruits. He offers Nuregarasu the Wind-Thunder Jewel as both treatment and a token of goodwill, regarding her tribe as an early step toward becoming Admiral of the Western Country and leader of all yokai 48 49.
Unfulfilled Plans
- Forge his own Fang Sword, intended to become Tessaiga; its creation is not documented 19.
- Claim the Roaring Cauldron on Penglai Island and eventually confront the Four War Gods 20.
- Train the remaining recruits into the core of his Second Army—Asura 30.
- Establish a Yokai Court Divine Dynasty, including standardized writing and axle widths 27.
- Obtain Tenseiga and reshape the Netherworld, an ambition strengthened by the elders’ deaths 8 46.
Notable Quotes
“The Dog Tribe can't depend on me for everything in the future. Otherwise, sooner or later, I'll end up like I did in the original story, fighting until I die of exhaustion.” 4
“Now all I need is a Fang Sword of my own—to forge my Tessaiga.” 19
“But after that rebirth, he won't be the Great Elder anymore.” 46
Trivia
- Red Evil Ogre initially mispronounces his name as “Dogfang,” “Tofu,” and “Bean Sprout” while adjusting to human speech 4.
- His previous-life management experience consisted chiefly of being managed himself; he doubts that owning a two-thousand-member QQ group counts as meaningful leadership experience 28.
- He instinctively reacts to the prospect of removing a tooth because of memories of dental drilling in his previous life, even though the remembered procedure did not actually hurt 22.
