Background / History
Oyakata originally united the Western Country’s yokai through force. The emergence of the Dog King broke that dominance and established a territorial division between cats and dogs. Zi Yan’s subsequent rise enabled further Dog Tribe expansion, but also triggered a brutal Leopard Cat offensive roughly twenty years before the current war 1 17.
For more than fifty years, repeated wars drained the tribe’s strength. Oyakata had directed the Western Country’s resources into his own clan, giving the Leopard Cats several times as many high-, mid-, and low-level fighters. Support from other yokai factions prevented the Dog Tribe’s destruction, while repeated clashes with Oyakata left the Dog King increasingly injured 3.
During an earlier retreat, hundreds of Dog Yokai—including Zi Yan’s parents—were slaughtered outside the fortress after failing to evacuate. The Great Elder refused to abandon the defensive position, despite his rage and the resentment of surviving clansmen. Zi Yan later came to understand that restraint as a choice made to preserve the tribe 38 41.
Organization and Leadership
Senior Figures
| Figure | Position | Responsibilities and significance |
|---|---|---|
| Dog King | King; Great Yokai | The tribe’s principal deterrent against Oyakata. Authorizes deployments and personally fights the Leopard Cat Lord to settle the outcome of wars 8 20 46. |
| Great Elder / Grand Elder | Senior elder; Tōga’s teacher | Oversees military strategy, supports Tōga’s development, and helps arrange his proposed marriage to Ringetsu. Killed by Oyakata after an ambush 6 14 40. |
| Second Elder | Senior elder | Assists in killing Chi Yan and directs the withdrawal to the second defensive line. Killed by the Panther Cat Fourth Elder 14 40. |
| Zi Yan | Third Elder | Garrisons the fortress, publicizes the tribe’s border victory, and leads its defense after the senior elders’ deaths 15 17 41 42. |
| Ringetsu | Princess; Dog King’s only daughter | Fights alongside Tōga and handles negotiations with Nuregarasu at Wind-Thunder Gorge 14 36. |
| Tōga | Patrol captain; founder of the Heavenly Host | Develops cultivation methods, trains elite troops, and earns recognition as Dog General and later Admiral. The latter title still awaits the Dog King’s final confirmation 4 28 36 47. |
Military Units
| Unit | Composition | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Standard patrol squad | One mid-level yokai leading nine lesser yokai | Border patrol and outpost duty; Tōga’s squad follows this structure despite his initially low-level cultivation rank 2 5. |
| Heavenly Host: Azure Fang Heavenly Army | Initially Red Evil Ogre, Qitian, Prison Flame Maru, and Instant Thunder Raiga | Tōga’s elite personal guard, charged with defending core territory and fighting the tribe’s strongest enemies 28. |
| Heavenly Host reserves | Sixteen additional Dog Yokai from Tōga’s twenty-member training force | Battle-tested troops trained in complementary offensive and defensive techniques 33. |
| Second Army—Asura | Planned around the remaining trainees | A future force Tōga intends to develop after the Wind-Thunder Gorge expedition; its establishment is not shown in the provided chapters 30. |
- Border squads rotate through half-month guard assignments 1.
- During training, Tōga’s twenty fighters operate in four groups of five 28.
- The Heavenly Host’s initial appointments are provisional: Tōga warns its members that their positions are not guaranteed 28.
Territory and Defenses
- Western Country holdings: The Dog Tribe dominates the west, while the Leopard Cats hold the east. Together, they occupy two-thirds of the Western Country; other yokai factions divide the remaining third 15.
- Border outposts: Most are conspicuously positioned, apart from concealed watch posts. Tōga’s mountain outpost overlooks ground deliberately cleared to prevent concealed approaches 3.
- Dog Tribe Fortress: Built on a thousand-meter mountain over more than forty years, with substantial earth-and-stone walls. Thousands of Dog Yokai are present when the Great Elder returns from the border 15.
- Fortress barrier: Strong enough that three Panther Cat elders consider a direct assault impractical. It eventually collapses during the siege 38 42.
- Layered withdrawal: The tribe is prepared to abandon outer territory and concentrate its fighters at stronger defenses rather than sacrifice its population to hold land 14 17.
- Human presence: Humans within Dog Tribe territory have become part of the yokai power structure 15.
Abilities & Skills
Canine Senses
Dog Yokai rely heavily on scent for reconnaissance and guard duty 1 2.
- Powerful members can detect scents carried on the wind from dozens of kilometers away without deliberate interference 1.
- Even untransformed low-level members can identify a particular scent within one or two kilometers 1.
- Blood and mixed battlefield odors can make their noses unreliable 27.
- Their keen hearing allows quiet remarks to reach nearby members clearly 7.
Human Transformation and Cultivation
The tribe uses human form as the foundation of its cultivation. The Dog King adopted this approach after encountering fragments of an eastern cultivation system 2.
- True cultivation is considered to begin after a Dog Yokai takes human form 2.
- The period immediately following transformation is the tribe’s fastest growth stage 4.
- Newly transformed members serving away from home may return for elder instruction or learn from their team’s strongest member, provided no emergency prevents it 4.
- Tōga’s teaching reforms address an older system in which vague elder explanations left progress heavily dependent on individual talent 2.
- The elders seek controlled transmission of core methods to protect their value and prevent other tribes from appropriating them 22.
Iron-Reaver Soul-Stealer
A basic claw technique Tōga teaches as particularly suitable for low-level Dog Yokai 4.
- Gathers and releases demonic power through the fingers and claws as cutting blades 4.
- Gives lesser fighters a practical alternative to swords; Red Evil Ogre demonstrates its effectiveness by destroying Hiranmaru’s weapon in a sparring match 21 28.
- Its distinctive yokai-power circulation makes outside imitation difficult 21.
- Heavy clashes can injure the user’s fingers, as shown by Red Evil Ogre’s swollen and bleeding hands 21.
Steel Fist
Tōga’s modified body-reinforcement technique uses yokai power to multiply physical force and strengthen defense 28.
- Enables low-level yokai to split mountains and shatter stone 28.
- Suits Prison Flame Maru especially well because of his physique and aggressive fighting style 28.
- Combined with Iron-Reaver Soul-Stealer and combat training, it allows ordinary low-level Dog Yokai in Tōga’s force to fight several comparable Leopard Cats at once 33.
Yokai-Pattern Tomoe Enhancement
Tōga grants selected subordinates essences of yokai power to develop their attributes and accelerate their growth 30.
- The four Heavenly Host members carry Tomoe containing both power essence and a portion of Tōga’s combat understanding 33.
- This inheritance helps them develop individualized techniques quickly 33.
- Supply depends on the essences Tōga can obtain; the risks are not fully understood when he begins using the method 30.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Fang Swords — Weapons held by captains, elders, and successors. Ringetsu inherits a sword containing substantial Great Yokai power from the Dog King; Tōga receives one from an elder 3 12.
- Tribal treasury — Contains thirteen maintained Fang Swords when Tōga visits, including blades bearing the Second and Third Elders’ demonic auras and mid-level weapons. He selects a wind-attribute sword for a devouring experiment 22.
- Cultivation manuals — Existing teachings that Zi Yan hopes Tōga will improve 15.
- Intelligence reports — Include information on prominent Karasu Tengu figures, allowing Tōga to recognize Nuregarasu 36.
External Relationships
- Leopard Cat / Panther Cat Tribe — Principal enemy. Decades of attrition, territorial warfare, and massacres leave the two tribes with little prospect of compromise 3 38.
- Dog Tribe Alliance — Allied factions sustain resistance to Oyakata. News of Chi Yan’s death restores morale after years of suppression 3 17.
- Karasu Tengu Tribe — Established ally. Tōga evacuates its survivors from Wind-Thunder Gorge, while its elders later seek Dog Tribe support and a place to settle 37 47 48.
- Nuregarasu — Karasu Tengu chieftain whom Tōga considers a potential future Great Yokai and valuable partner in the Dog Tribe’s rise 36.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Border Counteroffensive
- Tōga discovers the young Leopard Cat leaders’ planned raid and summons reinforcements rather than risk fighting alone 3 4 5.
- Qitian leads thirty Dog Yokai in an ambush after Tōga breaks the attackers’ concealment barrier 10.
- The Great and Second Elders kill Chi Yan. The tribe then withdraws to its stronger defenses while Zi Yan spreads news of the victory throughout the alliance 14 17.
Wind-Thunder Gorge Expedition
- The Dog King authorizes Tōga and Ringetsu to lead two squads to support Wind-Thunder Gorge 20.
- Tōga turns the expedition into a training campaign, forms the Azure Fang Heavenly Army, and enhances its first members 27 28 30.
- The Heavenly Host defeats the Panther Cat commanders, while Tōga kills White Bone Maru and gains recognition as Dog General 32 36.
- The expedition evacuates Nuregarasu and the surviving Karasu Tengu rather than leave them exposed to Oyakata’s retaliation 37.
Fortress Siege
- The Panther Cats imitate White Bone Maru’s aura to lure the Dog Tribe elders outside. The resulting ambush kills the Great and Second Elders 38 40.
- The fortress barrier falls, forcing Zi Yan’s defenders into close combat against an enemy force twice their size 42.
- Tōga and Zi Yan overcome the Panther Cat Great Elder’s cursed dragon. Dog Tribe warriors cut off the surviving attackers’ retreat 44.
- Most fortress buildings are destroyed, but more than half of the original defending force survives to gather the fallen 45.
Aftermath and Recovery
- The Dog King returns safely from his final clash with Oyakata, confirming that the tribe has survived the war and secured time to develop 46.
- Ringetsu’s breakthrough and Tōga’s acknowledged Admiral title give the survivors renewed confidence in their younger leadership 47.
- Tōga identifies delayed intelligence as a cause of the elders’ deaths: faster, flying messengers could have exposed the false White Bone Maru threat before they left the fortress. He therefore considers bringing the Karasu Tengu under his command an urgent communication priority 49.
