Background / History

Blood sacrifices and family rivalry

Nuregarasu grew up within the ruling lineage of the Karasu Tengu Tribe at Wind-Thunder Gorge. Her two older brothers became commanders, while she lacked supporters. Anhamaru assigned her to feed the unfinished Thunder Spear with her blood every day for two years 18.

She understood the political reason for her assignment: either brother could use the tribe’s treasures to become powerful enough to challenge their father. Anhamaru considered his unsupported daughter easier to control and believed he could reclaim the spear if necessary. Nuregarasu consequently regarded both the weapon’s celebrated purpose and her tribe with bitterness 18.

Invasion and succession

When the Panther Cat Sixth Elder entered the spear’s chamber and attacked, Nuregarasu activated it through her blood connection. Its stored lightning killed him, but left her badly injured and almost drained of yokai power 24 26.

With both brothers dead and Anhamaru dying, she barred ambitious commanders from approaching him. Removing his Azure Wings of Wind could quickly create another elder-level defender, but would cost Anhamaru his life. Despite her resentment toward her family, she refused to let the commanders pressure him into that outcome 29.

Nuregarasu eventually offered the Thunder Spear to her father, although her survival had become dependent on it. Anhamaru recognized how he had treated her as a tool, rejected the weapon, and reconciled with her. He named her his successor and urged her to abandon any hope of reconciliation with the Panther Cats 31.

Victory at Wind-Thunder Gorge

By the final battle against the Panther Cat Third Elder, Anhamaru had sacrificed himself to the Azure Wings of Wind. Nuregarasu wielded both tribal treasures against an enemy who used his own troops to exhaust her and threaten the surviving Karasu Tengu 35.

After discovering how to unite wind and thunder, she shattered the Third Elder’s lightning shield with Thousand Sparrows Cry and killed him. The attack further ruined her body and damaged the Thunder Spear. Rather than satisfaction, completing her revenge left her lonely and bewildered; her father’s final plea to live remained in her thoughts 35.

Protection under the Dog Tribe

Tōga caught Nuregarasu as she fell among the ruins. When Ringetsu took over negotiations, Nuregarasu feared that the Dog Tribe intended to seize her tribe’s artifacts. She briefly considered taking Ringetsu hostage rather than surrendering the treasures that sustained the Karasu Tengu’s strength and independence 35 36.

She instead offered everything in exchange for sheltering her people, and Ringetsu answered that the Dog Tribe wanted allies rather than slaves. The survivors—only a few dozen Karasu Tengu—left Wind-Thunder Gorge with Tōga’s group. Ringetsu treated Nuregarasu, whose overused treasures began draining her life once deprived of the gorge’s abundant spirit energy 37.

Asserting her authority

After the battle, three surviving elders publicly pressed for Dog Tribe support and a new settlement without first consulting Nuregarasu. She judged their actions an attempt to expand their own influence. Despite her injuries, she flew above the camp and threw the Thunder Spear beside one elder, forcing all three to beg for mercy before declaring sole authority over tribal affairs 47 48.

Tōga subsequently offered her a Wind-Thunder Jewel. She initially refused because she did not understand his intentions and feared accepting obligations on her tribe’s behalf. She accepted only after he stressed that her damaged body might not survive without it and invoked the consequences her death would have for her people 49.

The jewel improved her condition enough for her to take flight at dawn. Her display alongside Ringetsu ended in mutual compliments rather than a fight, and she returned to her camp, where even the three elders obediently followed her orders 50.

Appearance

Nuregarasu is a tall, slender young woman with a delicate, coldly beautiful face and elegant black clothing 18.

  • Hair: Long, ink-black hair, described as flowing black silk 18.
  • Eyes: Dark red, often retaining a calm or cold expression despite exhaustion 29 47.
  • Skin: Very fair; repeated sacrifices leave overlapping scars on her wrist 18.
  • Clothing: Black robes and a raven-black haori; after receiving the jewel, her newly grown raven feathers transform into a black twelve-layered robe 36 50.
  • Battle injuries: Scorched palms, silvery glasslike facial markings, and a carbonized right arm appear during the gorge conflict. Her arm later begins regrowing flesh 29 31 35 47.

Personality

Nuregarasu is sharp-witted and distrustful of claims made “for the tribe.” She sees through Anhamaru’s reasons for choosing her as the spear’s sacrifice and later recognizes the surviving elders’ attempts to gain influence. Her caution extends to beneficial gifts: she refuses Tōga’s jewel until the risks of accepting and refusing are made clear 18 48 49.

Her outward coldness does not erase her family loyalty. Although she disliked her father and brothers, she protects Anhamaru from opportunists and pleads to take him to the Dog Tribe for help. His renewed affection briefly breaks through her emotional distance 29 31.

As chieftain, she is willing to sacrifice herself for her people but will not casually surrender the artifacts on which their survival depends. She also refuses to remain a figurehead for the elders, enforcing her authority even while gravely wounded 36 37 48.

Abilities & Skills

Wind-Thunder Invocation: Thousand Sparrows Cry

Nuregarasu’s combined wind-and-lightning technique uses the Azure Wings of Wind and Thunder Spear together 35.

  • Summons eighteen lightning-wrapped tornado columns.
  • Transforms the thrown spear into myriad lightning sparrows with compressed wind-blade wings and lightning-plasma beaks.
  • Draws on the gorge’s weather and terrain to sustain an assault from multiple directions.
  • Breaks the already wounded Third Elder’s lightning shield and destroys his body.
  • Inflicts severe strain on her body and leaves the spear nearly half-destroyed 35.

Blood Bond and Thunder Spear Control

Her sacrifices connect her yokai aura to the Thunder Spear and help purge its violent power 18 31.

  • Uses talon-shaped fingertips to cut her wrist, then carries the blood to the spear’s gemstone with yokai power 18.
  • Activates the weapon’s stored lightning and uses smaller discharges to deter hostile commanders 24 29.
  • Becomes dependent on the spear for survival after its backlash; removing it would be fatal in her condition 31.

Wind Manipulation and Flight

The Azure Wings of Wind allow her to direct wind and support herself in the air 35 48.

  • Produces wind-blade attacks and guides the turbulence used in her combined invocation 35.
  • Forms wings from the surrounding wind to rise above the tribal camp 48.
  • Loses aerial support when the overtaxed Wings dissolve after the Third Elder’s defeat 35.

Regeneration and Feather Transformation

  • Her severely burned right arm begins regrowing flesh during recovery 47.
  • Converts newly grown raven feathers into layered black clothing through yokai power 50.
  • Recovery remains painful and incomplete before she consumes the Wind-Thunder Jewel 47 49.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Thunder Spear — An unfinished tribal weapon with an azure gemstone and blood-red markings. Its power initially depends heavily on Wind-Thunder Gorge’s lightning spirit energy; outside the gorge, it becomes effectively inert before beginning to drain her life 18 29 37.
  • Azure Wings of Wind / Wind Wing — The ruling lineage’s inherited treasure, previously wielded by Anhamaru. It grants high-level strength to a mid-level yokai and combines naturally with the Thunder Spear 29 35 36.
  • Wind-Thunder Jewel — A consumable crystal created by Tōga’s panoply yokai power. Its energy nourishes her injured body and provides a possible means of repairing the spear 49.

Relationships

  • Anhamaru — Father and predecessor. His ambition led him to exploit her blood sacrifices, but they reconcile before his death; she inherits leadership and remembers his final command to live 18 31 35.
  • Two elder brothers — Tribal commanders and potential rivals for the inherited treasures. Both die during the conflict, leaving Nuregarasu Anhamaru’s only surviving child 18 29.
  • Tōga — Rescuer and political patron. He values her combat potential and judgment, seeks to bring the Karasu Tengu under his command, and gives her the jewel that begins alleviating her injuries 35 36 49 50.
  • Ringetsu — Negotiator and healer. Their initial confrontation becomes an alliance; Ringetsu admires Nuregarasu’s resolve, stabilizes her wounds, and later exchanges compliments with her 36 37 50.
  • Three surviving elders — Advisors whose attempts to act independently provoke her distrust. She intimidates them into recognizing her sole authority 47 48 50.
  • Panther Cat Third and Sixth Elders — Invaders seeking the tribal treasures. Nuregarasu kills both while defending Wind-Thunder Gorge 24 26 35.
