Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sequence 3 — Blatherer | 1 | Secretly attained after entering Earth, consuming a Devil, and adopting Edward Vaughan’s human identity. He later identifies the consumed Devil as Fear, whom he reproduced through his own authority 50. |
| Sequence 2 — Abyss Angel | 1 | Survived the destruction of the Devil Faction and advanced by taking Farbauti’s characteristics. The War Angel later identifies him as both a Sequence 2 Devil and a Sequence 2 Prisoner; the timing of his Prisoner advancement is not given 48. |
Sequence 1 Advancement Preparations
| Requirement / Condition | Documented Status |
|---|---|
| Massacres that inspire lasting terror | At least three are required, with nine providing the best results. Edward has completed five of nine; all five remain historically attributable to him more than a century later 29. |
| Blood sacrifice of an Angel | Completed. He devoured an Angel of the Church of the Eternal Blazing Sun 5 29. |
| Sequence 1 Devil characteristic | The True Creator reports that the missing characteristic is held by followers of the Primordial Moon; Edward’s acquisition of it is not shown 5. |
| Tingen as a sixth massacre | Unsuccessful. Edward states that the intended slaughter would have raised his count to six, but the city was not destroyed as planned 17 29. |
| Protection from interference | Edward asks the True Creator to conceal his advancement. He anticipates intervention from the Mother Tree, Farbauti, and orthodox gods 5 29. |
| Estimated success | Edward initially claims more than 70% confidence. Later commentary places his immediate chance around 60%, insufficient to withstand outside interference 5 29. |
Background / History
Origin and Entry into Earth
The Monarch of Decay lost half his sefirah in an ancient battle. Unable to enter Earth directly without risking destruction by the Eternal Blazing Sun, he used knowledge stolen from a soul to construct a soulless device, sent it into Earth, and awakened within it as a human. He adopted the identity of Edward Vaughan and founded the Devil Faction to conceal his true nature 1.
His objective is not complete annihilation. He intends to devour gods and adjacent pathways, seize sefirah, and subject the universe to perpetual decay without allowing destruction and rebirth. Even after Earth flourished, he continued to despise it 1.
Intis, Roselle, and His Family
Edward approached Roselle Gustav and presented himself as another survivor of the old civilization. In reality, he read Roselle’s memories and used them to improve his imitation of humanity. Roselle eventually learned that Edward was not simply the human predecessor he claimed to be; Edward described the original human as part of himself, but not his whole identity 23 27 32.
Edward married Adela and fathered Traynor. During Roselle’s war against the royal family, he pleaded for mercy but also hunted down Traynor’s maternal relatives. Adela later took her own life. Edward subsequently watched the plot against Roselle unfold without intervening, treating the emperor’s approaching death as the final act of a drama 36 42.
After Roselle’s death, Edward left Traynor in Intis. He returned briefly to give his son a severed finger bearing his wedding ring, instructing him to place it in Adela’s coffin. Two months later, he sailed toward the Southern Continent and selected the Balam Empire’s imperial mausoleum ruins as his next destination 40.
Pilgrimage Church
Edward and the Temperance Angel Richard Ernst became the two leaders of the Pilgrimage Church. Its subordinate Ernst Charity Foundation was founded by Richard during Roselle’s era and developed a favorable public reputation through welfare work. Despite Edward’s nature, the organization is described as lawful good 41.
Outside churches interpret Edward and Richard as equal partners rather than a deity and his believer. They mistake Edward’s indifference toward the organization for a leadership dispute, with some supporting Richard in the hope that he will eventually purge the Devil’s influence 41.
Appearance
Edward maintains a composed human appearance, supported by deliberately chosen clothing and accessories 2 16.
- Eyes: Pure black, reflecting nearby people like mirrors 2.
- Clothing: Expensive bespoke garments from an established Empress Borough tailor; he values their cost enough to demand reimbursement after Tingen 17.
- Glasses: Tortoiseshell frames with plain lenses, worn to stabilize his human appearance rather than correct his eyesight 16.
- Walking stick: A black stick of unknown material; a later passage describes its gold-inlaid head 2 48.
- Mythical Creature Form: Twisted, blade-like black exoskeleton, skin harder than steel, and blood transformed into thin streams of fire 15.
- Uncontrolled expressions: Surprise and delight can distort his face into a hideous grin, which he physically smooths back into its usual peaceful expression 16.
Personality
Edward’s courtesy, interests, conversational habits, and much of his apparent temperament are performances modeled on the real Edward Vaughan. A portion of his consciousness is specifically implanted with information used to reproduce that human’s behavior. His patient listening and friendly manner help him gather information and tailor his deception 18 32.
Beneath this persona, he delights in decline and in people struggling against approaching catastrophe. Dunn’s courage and self-sacrifice interest him because they make the prospect of Tingen’s destruction more satisfying. He describes 4,351 deaths as “very few” compared with his usual methods 9 17.
His appetite favors deeply sinful souls and morally degraded humans. Pure souls and excessive vitality nauseate him; he directs such offerings toward the True Creator instead 5.
Edward’s concept of friendship includes mutual aid, trust, suspicion, violence, and ultimately pleasure in a friend’s death. He nevertheless treats Richard differently from potential victims of his sophistry: when Richard condemns the Tingen killings, Edward answers frankly rather than trying to dismantle his beliefs 5 17.
Abilities & Skills
Decay / Withering Authority
- The Withering pathway begins by plundering life and spreading debilitation, then expands into stealing intangible possibilities and the civilizations formed from them 23.
- Edward attempts to corrupt the True Creator during the Tingen descent, disguising his unfamiliar Decay influence as the Evernight Goddess’s calamity-related effects 15.
- Ouroboros limits this corruption through his intervention, but the True Creator is still affected 15.
Devouring and Reproduction
- Consumes Devils, sinful souls, and Angels; the Devil families’ members are potential prey rather than protected kin 1 5 22.
- Devoured Fear whole and reproduced him through his authority, obtaining his characteristics while bypassing the usual Devil transformation 50.
- Has read all of Roselle’s memories and seeks an opportunity to acquire Klein’s memories to better understand the old civilization 32.
- Considers Sequence 5 the minimum acceptable level for a prospective servant 38.
Temptation and Soul Bargains
- Discerns desires and uses them to plan temptation and corruption; Klein’s financial difficulties prompt an attempted monetary approach 47.
- Claims Dunn’s soul after Dunn breaks their bargain by refusing to harm his companions 14.
- Attempts to buy Klein’s soul, but encounters resistance suggesting that a true god has already reserved it 47.
- Can still strengthen goodwill and trust through Devil influence even when a soul bargain fails 47.
Mental Influence and Language of Foulness
- Subtly controls Dunn after their dream encounter, using him to monitor the Nighthawks 9.
- Forces Dunn to aim at Klein, although Dunn eventually resists the command 14.
- Uses the Language of Foulness and whispers to drive vulnerable people in the dream version of Tingen to suicide 15.
- Repeatedly directs provocative remarks at Bernadette, forcing her to struggle against their emotional effect 45.
Divine Kingdom Prototype
- Projects a simulated Abyss over Tingen and begins separating the city from reality 14 15.
- Originally intends to swallow the city within the Abyss before advancing 14.
- His projection is pulled into the collective dream created by the Evernight Goddess’s power, forcing another change of plan 15.
Regeneration and Bodily Control
- Survives Roselle’s curse blowing apart half his head and subsequently repairs his body 24 25.
- Regrows a severed finger after removing its spirituality and sending the original to Adela’s coffin 40.
- Revives from an apparently lifeless state after Zaratul turns him into a marionette 38.
- Takes control of Dunn’s soulless body during the Tingen catastrophe 14 15.
Supernatural Perception and Servants
- Receives prayers and directs his gaze toward distant worshippers 2.
- Detects the concentration of resentment and sin around Capim, including indications that another power shares his burden 29.
- Sees the cobra-like curse attached to Talim and frightens it into retreat 48.
- Corrupts an owl into a servant and uses its sight and hearing to observe the operation against Lanevus 31.
- Creates a marionette duplicate of himself while investigating Carter’s mansion 48.
Travel and Mystical Knowledge
- Teleports through the Spirit World; combining this with a Door-pathway artifact allows him to evade the Eternal Blazing Sun’s gaze 16.
- Uses Traveler power to pass through the blocked entrance beneath Carter’s mansion 48.
- Explains adjacent pathways, Uniquenesses, Amon, and the Hermits of Fate to Klein 33.
- Identifies the Master Key’s connection to Mr. Door and explains how breaking its casing would release corruption and ravings 44.
- Claims to know how to remove corruption from a Beyonder characteristic, quoting Klein 4,000 pounds for the method 44.
Writing, Music, and Cooking
- Advises Fors on plot structure and commissions a play from her 2 22.
- Composes operas, chorales, and Masses; the Aurora Order owes him for more than a dozen religious commissions 17.
- Rigs a piano pedal to rock the infant True Creator’s cradle while he works 17.
- Cooks well, but deliberately makes food taste terrible when performing a stereotypical “Englishman”; his cake drives the True Creator to eject him from the divine kingdom 2.
- Prepares zongzi that Klein accepts during Edward’s attempt to repair their relationship 47.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Traveler emerald ring — Sequence 5 Apprentice-pathway artifact allowing frequent teleportation. Its drawbacks include strong convergence, inaccurate destinations, and persistent mental howls 6.
- Walking stick — Used as part of his human presentation and to push aside tentacles in the True Creator’s sanctuary 2.
- Tortoiseshell glasses — Plain-lensed accessory used to stabilize his human appearance 16.
- Wedding ring — Set with small white diamonds and a ruby; sent to Adela’s coffin on his severed finger 40.
- Travel notebook — Lists destinations including the Twilight Giant Palace, Balam imperial mausoleums, Highland Kingdom ruins, and Pasu Island’s bay, several officially forbidden to visitors 40.
Relationships
- True Creator — Ally, employer, and target of concealed corruption. Edward supports his descent, shelters his infant vessel, and helps redirect Aurora Order members into charity work while bargaining over payment and expenses 2 15 17 19.
- Richard Ernst — Student, believer, and fellow leader of the Pilgrimage Church. Richard condemns Edward’s killings; Edward funds his work conditionally and assigns him to collect Roselle’s diaries and investigate the Abyss 17 34 41.
- Roselle Gustav — Edward calls him his best friend, but allows his death and later receives curses expressing Roselle’s intense hatred. Their earlier association included cooking, family snowball fights, and exchanges of mystical knowledge 13 19 24 32 36.
- Klein Moretti / Zhou Mingrui — Investigation target approached as a fellow transmigrator. Edward offers knowledge and food while seeking his memories, trust, and soul 32 33 44 47.
- Adela — Deceased wife and Traynor’s mother. Edward sends his wedding ring to her coffin rather than attending her funeral 40 42.
- Traynor Sauron Vaughn — Biological son who reveres strength but fears his father. Traynor also sponsors the Pilgrimage Church 24 41.
- Bernadette Gustav — Roselle’s daughter; once shared bets and family games with Edward, but distrusts him and becomes more hostile after Roselle’s death 13 45 47.
- Mr. A — Aurora Order member whom Edward keeps assigned to Charity School volunteer work. Edward also supplies Death and Imprisonment abilities for the assassination of Beckland 5 22.
- Kisma / Saint Tenebrous — Coordinates Edward’s annual sacrifices, reports Aurora Order affairs, and helps administer the organization 5 22.
- Fors Wall — Writing collaborator whose manuscripts Edward critiques and praises; he also discusses her Abraham Family connection and bracelet 2 22.
- Maria — Pilgrimage Church representative whom Edward rewards with approval for investigating Capim’s trafficking and instructs to sacrifice Capim’s soul 29 36.
- Dunn Smith — Controlled through a bargain and killed for resisting Edward’s order to attack his companions 9 14.
- Ouroboros — Reverses Tingen’s fate through Reboot and sacrifices his body to limit Edward’s corruption of the True Creator 15.
- Medici — Missing War Angel whom Edward is paid to locate. Their meeting becomes an exchange of information, insults, and bargaining rather than an immediate rescue 36 48 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Tingen Catastrophe
- Encounters Dunn in a dream while guarding against misuse of dangerous material in Roselle’s diary, then turns him into a means of monitoring the Nighthawks 9.
- Revises his plan repeatedly after discovering 0-08, reading Ince Zangwill’s notebook, and encountering the Flaring Sun Charm 14.
- Kills Dunn, takes his body, and attempts to turn Tingen into an Abyssal sacrifice site. Klein’s prayer draws the Evernight Goddess’s attention 14.
- Crushes Megose, takes the evil god’s offspring, and exploits the collective dream to attempt corruption of the True Creator 15.
- Escapes after Ouroboros activates Reboot, carrying the True Creator’s infant vessel. Later accepts responsibility for 4,351 deaths; a successful destruction of the city would have left an Abyssal projection for at least five centuries 15 16 17.
Backlund and Lanevus
- Helps reorganize the Aurora Order’s charitable outreach, beginning with the East Borough, while maintaining his own writing work 17 19.
- Participates in the hunt for Lanevus but decides that recovering the True Creator’s backup flesh is not worth fighting the prepared Church of Evernight 29 31.
- Observes the destruction of that flesh through an owl servant, then approaches Klein after Lanevus’s death and addresses him in Chinese 31 32.
- During the serial-murder investigation, lets a Devil Dog leave and encourages further deaths to increase the bounty 38.
Roselle Exhibition and Investigation of Klein
- Meets Klein at the memorial exhibition and identifies Bernadette, whose hostility exposes Klein to High Sequence influence 45 47.
- Offers an apology and two account slips totaling 1,000 pounds. Klein refuses the money but accepts his zongzi 47.
- Fails to acquire Klein’s soul and suspects the Evernight Goddess’s involvement, while concluding that he has successfully strengthened Klein’s goodwill and trust 47.
Search for Medici
- Accepts an Angel-level favor as payment for making a genuine effort to find Medici; the promised favor cannot be used for an act against humanity 36.
- Finds the imprisoned War Angel beneath Miller Carter’s mansion but initially leaves after being taunted 48.
- Returns and trades information about the True Creator’s descent and recovery. He withholds an immediate rescue or report because Medici’s confinement preserves Edward’s value as the True Creator’s indispensable helper 50.
