Background / History
Tingen and the True Creator’s Descent
Lanevus was a wanted swindler who had absconded with more than ten thousand pounds. In Tingen, he deceived his fiancée, Megose, and persuaded Hood Eugen to help perform a ritual that made her pregnant with the True Creator’s offspring. Ince Zangwill secretly assisted by implanting characteristics taken from a descendant of Death into Megose. The Factory District’s accumulated resentment and oppression nourished the ritual 8 25 26.
After regaining his reason, Lanevus realized that the offspring’s birth could make him a sacrifice. He attempted to escape but received a terrifying warning in his dreams. Forced to remain in Tingen, he planned to alert the Nighthawks, Mandated Punishers, and Machinery Hivemind so that they would handle the danger for him 8.
Edward Vaughan, the Abyss Angel, kept him under supervision. Lanevus reported on the Nighthawks’ movements and the clues he had left behind. As Megose approached the Nighthawks’ base, Edward allowed him to leave with his suitcase, reminding him not to forget their deal 13.
Confinement in Backlund
Despite instructions to travel directly to Backlund, Lanevus took a carriage detour around the Sonia Sea. Aurora Order members eventually spotted him while he was passing through Backlund and brought him back. With the True Creator’s descent successful, he was housed comfortably as a Blessed 19.
Lanevus rejected Mr. Z’s proposed assignments at the Poorhouse and Welfare Home. He preferred confinement in his villa to charitable work, disparaging both the people receiving assistance and the cultists helping them. Privately, he resented the lack of personal freedom and opportunities to exploit wealthy believers, and wanted to destroy the Divine Gift inside him 20 25.
Escape and the East Borough Hunt
Lanevus escaped when his two guards became distracted by gambling in a tavern. Disguised among East Borough workers, he encountered Jason Beria and a Sequence 6 Devil Dog. His disclosure that the Abyss Angel was in Backlund spared him immediate death, but Jason demanded further information and threatened to feed him to the dog if he withheld anything 25.
Following the escape, Mr. Z revoked Lanevus’s Blessed status and declared him a traitor, ordering his capture alive if possible and permitting his killing. Lanevus subsequently collaborated with Jason Beria; bounty hunters investigating him were seized and tortured by the Devils 26 28.
To obstruct the True Creator’s attempts to locate his flesh, Lanevus spread its corruption among hundreds of people. Edward began checking roughly 350 contaminated individuals, delegating part of the hunt to an Andariel Family servant. Lanevus noticed the screening and contaminated more people to prolong it 29 30.
Defeat and Death
Klein recognized a disguised Lanevus near the Dockworkers’ Association and confirmed his identity through divination. Through Audrey, he instructed Xio and Fors to report Lanevus’s possession of the True Creator’s divinity exclusively to the Church of Evernight 29 30 31.
Crestet Cesimir led the Church’s assault. Lanevus attempted to turn nearby sleepers into flesh bombs, then forced corrupted people to mutate and attack the Nighthawks. He also unleashed a divine aura that overwhelmed the Red Gloves, but Crestet’s sacred relic destroyed the divine flesh 31.
Lanevus escaped into sewers he had scouted beforehand. Klein intercepted him, used a Slumber Charm to create an opening, struck his throat, pierced his eyes with tarot cards, and snapped his neck. Klein then severed his head with a kick. The revenge brought Klein’s Clown potion to complete digestion 31.
Crestet’s team later found the headless corpse surrounded by tarot cards, making the scene resemble a ritual sacrifice. Klein recovered a badge belonging to the Hermits of Fate, while Edward’s internal remarks indicated that he had consumed Lanevus’s soul 33.
Appearance
- Usual appearance: An ordinary round face, broad forehead, round black-framed glasses, and a habitual condescending, mocking smile 20 25 30.
- Escape disguise: A flat cap concealing his forehead, golden hair dye, two painted facial scars, removed glasses, and shoes raised by five centimeters 25.
- Later disguise: Bronze skin, an angular-looking face, and elongated gold-rimmed spectacles. Klein’s spiritual intuition recognized him despite these changes 29.
Personality
Lanevus is calculating, contemptuous, and opportunistic. He expected the Aurora Order to offer opportunities for exploitation, not fundraising and welfare work. His refusal to assist the poor reflected open disdain rather than simple reluctance 20 25.
He readily submits when confronted by overwhelming power, but continues assessing how to manipulate the situation. During his encounter with Jason, he recognized the Devil’s fear of the Abyss Angel and regained some composure. Even his account of Edward’s nightmare punishment mixed genuine terror with deliberate performance 25.
Edward’s warning left lasting trauma: being watched by him or recalling the dream caused Lanevus to scratch his arms and feel lingering pain. Nevertheless, that fear did not prevent another escape once an opportunity appeared 13 25.

Deception and Disguise
Lanevus combines practiced manipulation with physical disguise 8 25.

Divine Flesh and Corruption
The True Creator’s flesh gave Lanevus powers beyond his Sequence 8 rank 19 31.
- Spread corruption across hundreds of people, creating numerous sources that interfered with the True Creator’s tracking 29 30.
- Forced corrupted people to mutate and attack the Nighthawks 31.
- Attempted to detonate sleeping people as flesh bombs; a Red Gloves Sealed Artifact neutralized the attempt through an illusion 31.

- Limits: The divine flesh did not deter the Devil Dog, and Crestet’s sacred relic ultimately destroyed it 25 31.
