Background / History

Awakening and early career

Roselle understood his arrival as transmigration into another world. His former life had seemed boring to him, and he initially greeted his new circumstances with enthusiasm. While serving under the God of Steam and Machinery, he met Edward Vaughan, who falsely presented himself as another survivor of the old era. Roselle readily accepted the apparent companionship despite their supposed different national origins 3 32.

He personally initiated the Industrial Revolution and the age of steam and machinery. His diary nevertheless records anxiety that these changes might create favorable conditions for evil gods to descend 4.

Rise in Intis

Roselle challenged the Sauron royal family, overthrew its rule, and eventually proclaimed himself emperor. The former dynasty was nearly exterminated. At Edward’s request, he spared Adela and Traynor, although Edward subsequently hunted down their other relatives 39 42.

Edward supported Roselle’s expansion with victories, money, and military resources. These wars also enabled Edward’s massacres and potion digestion. According to the Monarch of Decay, Roselle accepted his assistance while restricting his advancement and shifting responsibility for much of the bloodshed onto him 5 23 27 39.

Cosmic journey and corruption

Edward secretly corrupted Roselle and hinted at the location of his true body, but Roselle instead went to the moon and fell under the Mother Goddess of Depravity’s influence. During a cosmic encounter, the Ruler of Withering temporarily restored some of his reason and revealed that Edward was part of him. He then promised further assistance—and Roselle’s eventual murder when the continent declined beneath his wars 6 27.

Roselle was sent back without retaining the meeting’s memories. His journey nevertheless revealed the truth of his homeland: this world was Earth, thousands of years after his original era. Underwater ruins, the calendar, and the planet’s rotation finally connected the evidence he had gathered over decades 27.

Assassination and confinement

The final confrontation began when negotiations with church representatives collapsed at White Maple Palace. Roselle fought the Eternal Blazing Sun and the God of Steam and Machinery in the Astral World. He deliberately sought death as a means of escaping corruption and left the earth to avoid spreading that corruption through his battle 39.

The Mother Goddess’s corruption erupted through his chest as a blood-red full moon. Overwhelmed, he fell into the palace ruins, where he recovered his lost memory of the Ruler of Withering and recognized Edward’s true involvement. The Monarch of Decay told him that he would not resurrect successfully 39.

Roselle’s remaining existence is confined to his mausoleum. Edward’s decay curse helps him obtain brief lucidity against the Mother Goddess’s influence, but also binds him more firmly inside. He spends roughly half his time asleep and is mad for half of his waking hours 9 16.

Appearance

Roselle’s early human appearance features pale skin, blue eyes, and slightly curly dark-brown hair. He favors bright clothing and ties his hair back with blue fabric 27 32.

  • Battle form: An enormous dark figure seated on a throne, with distorted laws, chaos, torrents of knowledge, and eyes forming parts of his mythical appearance; he is also depicted crowned and armored 39.
  • Mausoleum state: A shattered shadow bound to a throne by pale blue-green flowering branches. Red fissures repeatedly open and close across his body like eyes or lunar phases 24.

Personality

Roselle is exuberant, irreverent, and eager for familiar companionship. His first conversations with Edward jump between their former lives, games, and personal questions. His diary also contains embarrassing private observations, jokes, and blunt complaints about people who frustrate him 3 24 32 45.

His ambitions extend from technological and political reform to godhood. He resents Florent Sauron’s attempt to make him a subordinate, while his later diary considers pathways without existing true gods as missed opportunities 24.

His affection for his family and concern for ordinary people coexist with brutal imperial expansion. He fears Bernadette’s predicted rejection, creates toys for his children, and arranges safeguards against dangerous diary knowledge. His final choice to fight away from the earth preserves evidence of conscience; Edward’s claim that he was simply a born tyrant remains a hostile interpretation that Bernadette rejects 9 24 39 45.
