History
Foundation and Early Years
Principal Gui established Pokémon High School with Mu Ling as its only other original staff member. It initially had one year group and few students. Early graduates Jixiang and Iron Pipe later returned as teachers, while alumnus Gangzao helped occasionally 658.
The school also accepted adult islanders who lacked basic education. Little Reporter's parents learned literacy, mathematics, and general social knowledge there in their thirties, with Gui allowing them to defer tuition payments. Both formed bonds with Pokémon and subsequently found work at Pier 1 655.
For at least six years, staffing and enrollment remained largely unchanged. By its tenth year, only three graduates had stayed on as teachers: Jixiang, Iron Pipe, and the current Duty Teacher. Service staff were recruited from Island 6's villagers 645 658.
Shen Qi's Enrollment and Public Recognition
When Shen Qi enrolled, the school had few teachers, poor facilities, and many Pokémon with physical or emotional difficulties. Most students came from modest households; some, including Xiao Chun, worked to help support their families 2 4 18 46.
Shen Qi's racing achievements gave the school new publicity. Principal Gui promoted his race entries to attract support, while planning renovations and increased enrollment. A bridge between Out Island and Island 6 offered access to prospective students from the northern Orange Islands 159 339.
After withdrawing from the Spring Race to retrieve an unusual skeletal fossil, Shen Qi presented fossil-revival research with Li Ke. He then loaned the assembled Aerodactyl skeleton to Pokémon High School for display. The announcement brought favorable attention, and Shen Qi stated that the school no longer needed aid merely to remain open 394 395 397.
Competition with Yangbeila Branch School
The Shamouti Island Chief initially supported the prospect of his granddaughter Flula enrolling, but later promoted a Yangbeila High School branch on Shamouti Island. He spread claims that Pokémon High School was failing while seeking students from the same island communities 369 382 394.
The new bridge brought both opportunity and direct competition. Principal Gui accepted Yangbeila Branch School's Friendly Match challenge because refusing—or suffering a crushing defeat—could undermine recruitment. With the school normally enrolling only around a hundred new students annually, a substantial decline threatened its survival 647 648 655.
Shen Qi recruited additional teachers, including Cassidy and Butch, whose experience strengthened the school's battle instruction. Pokémon High School ultimately won the Teacher Group, student group, and team match, overturning its opponent's expectations 658 660 687.
Expansion and Succession
Following the Friendly Match, Gui approved hiring Xiao Cui and proposed restarting the school's adult training program. The school subsequently enrolled 173 new students and became a partner in a nearby Pokémon Resort project 688 707.
Gui encouraged Shen Qi to consider becoming the next principal, emphasizing overall direction and major decisions rather than constant attendance. Shen Qi began testing his suitability by learning the school's support duties alongside Xiao Chun 645 646 658.
As Gui's health worsened, Shen Qi persuaded him to hand over his duties and recuperate before the Fruit Sevii Islands summer camp. Gui later described Shen Qi's graduating class as the last he would see off. At the ceremony, Shen Qi presented Gui with a diploma after receiving his own 731 735 737.
Campus and Facilities
The grounds are extensive because land in the school's remote location is inexpensive. Buildings occupy relatively little of the site, leaving substantial space for Pokémon and natural vegetation 2 705.
| Area | Description |
|---|---|
| Main Gate and Access Road | A farmhouse-style sliding iron gate marks the entrance. The formerly potholed dirt approach was being asphalted by the end of a later summer vacation 512 552. |
| Teaching Building | Contains classrooms and the Archive Room at the far end of the first floor. The Archive Room handles student records and personnel paperwork 1 658. |
| Faculty Office Building | Houses the principal's office on its uppermost floor 339. |
| Library Building | Provides introductory textbooks on Trainer skills and other study materials 37 45. |
| Auditorium | Used for assemblies, photography-contest results, assessments, and graduation ceremonies 42 47 645 736. |
| Sports Field and Equipment Warehouse | Facilities for physical education, activities, and equipment storage 1 150. |
| Nurse's Office | Provides basic treatment and rest for minor injuries, colds, heatstroke, and mild anemia. The school has no full-time doctor; trained teachers handle common problems 187. |
| Pokémon Living Area | A rear refuge incorporating a lake, woods, and largely untended vegetation. Access is restricted to protect recovering Pokémon 2 17 646. |
| Kitchen | Used by support staff to prepare Pokémon meals; staff can also use it themselves 657 658. |
- The rear grounds have no enclosing wall. A fence separates part of the Pokémon Living Area from wooded hills, but wild Pokémon can enter and leave 246 646.
- The surrounding landscape extends toward Cliffside Coast and the beach, with Marker Forest and Marker Mountain off to the side 246 705.
- Renovation plans included completing additional classrooms and converting a large unfinished upper space into a tiered lecture hall 339.
Education
Purpose and Curriculum
- Vocational focus: The school prioritizes Pokémon Workers rooted in the islands' environment and industries, rather than elite battling or fashionable, high-profit specialties 394 702.
- General education: Despite poor facilities, it uses the same official textbooks as the Kanto region 46.
- Pokémon studies: Coursework emphasizes energy perception and control, communication, coordination, and interaction with Pokémon 19 138.
- Independent Practical Courses: Students can apply for specialized instruction, although the small teaching staff limits availability 141 143.
- Further pathways: Graduates may enter Pokémon-related employment, take club trainee positions, or pursue further education 645.
Assessments and Standards
| Assessment | Documented Standard or Function |
|---|---|
| First-Year Energy Perception | Even vaguely sensing one type of energy meets the basic requirement 18. |
| Fundamentals of Energy Communication | Clearly sensing one type earns an excellent first-year grade 45. |
| Energy Coordination | At the school's early standard, demonstrating basic Normal-type Energy Coordination would qualify as excellent even in the third year 45. |
| Compatibility Assessment | Instruments measure the coordination between a student and Pokémon as they use moves together. Passing is part of the process for taking a school Pokémon home 69 141. |
| Shen Qi and Lilligant's Assessment | They passed a test with a threshold above 50% Compatibility 141. |
Teaching Limitations and Improvements
- Originally, each year group had only one or two teachers, making individualized instruction difficult 143.
- Although Classes A and B remained separate administratively, Shen Qi's first-year cohort of eighty-odd students generally studied together in one large class 396.
- Before later recruitment, instruction barely met the needs of common Pokémon Worker occupations and was much weaker in battling, racing, and Pokémon Contests 591.
- Cassidy and Butch filled a major gap in advanced battle instruction after joining the staff 660.
- Recruitment remained difficult because Island 6 offered limited entertainment, modest pay, and few obvious advancement opportunities 657.
Pokémon Care and Partnership Rules
Admission and Rehabilitation
- The school houses injured, abandoned, or psychologically scarred Pokémon that cannot safely return to the wild 192 646.
- Its 246 registered residents have records and identification tags. Visiting wild Pokémon are not included in this total 646.
- Ordinary students cannot enter the Pokémon Living Area directly. Duty students and support staff feed residents while allowing them to approach people at their own pace 646.
- Staff use corresponding type-energy fluctuations to seem familiar and reassuring, gradually helping withdrawn Pokémon accept human contact and guidance 646.
- Rations are prepared for registered residents with an additional 20% allowance for visiting Pokémon 646.
Student Conduct
- Bond before capture: Conventional battle-and-capture methods are prohibited for the school's residents. Students must develop emotional bonds and become partners through trust 192.
- Assessment before departure: Students must satisfy the school's requirements, including Compatibility testing, before taking a resident Pokémon home 69 141.
- No collection fee: Unlike other schools described in the story, Pokémon High School does not charge students for the cost of raising the Pokémon they take home 141.
- Respect refusal: Students must not force frightened or unwilling Pokémon to participate in photography 42.
- Holiday contact: The school remains open Monday through Friday during summer vacation so students can continue building bonds 47.
Notable Residents
- Lilligant — A longstanding favorite among students who eventually becomes Shen Qi's partner after he passes the Compatibility Assessment 137 141.
- Porygon / Dodo — Placed at the school by the Security Bureau to recover and gradually interact with society. Additional Bureau personnel guarded the campus during this period 136 137 246.
- Shiny Lopunny — Taken in during summer vacation and later brought home by Shen Qi 137 191.
- Bellsprout and Oddish — Timid residents used in Iron Pipe's warning against frightening Pokémon for photographs 20 42.

Events and Practical Training
Annual Pokémon Photography Contest
The contest accepts photographs on any theme, uses multiple judging rounds, and awards prizes to the top five entries. Teachers present it as an opportunity to practice communicating with Pokémon 19.
| Placement | Entrant | Photograph | Subject |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | Xiao Ming | Our Family | His family and Pokémon cleaning one another after a storm damaged their Berry fields 44. |
| Second | Zhenxing | Having Two Hands | A girl embracing a Rattata, each missing a limb 44. |
| Third | Shen Qi | Flowers Reflected by the Water | A photograph of Lilligant, taken with her permission 44. |
Friendly Match Against Yangbeila Branch School
| Division | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Teacher Group | Won after opening with two losses; Butch and Cassidy equalized the score, and Jixiang's opponent Xiao Cui forfeited 670 672 674 687. |
| Student Group | Won 687. |
| Team Match | Won 687. |
- This was Pokémon High School's first Friendly Match against another high school 647.
- New teachers' contracts were publicly checked to establish that they were genuine employees rather than temporary outside fighters 667.
- The school had no regular uniform; Gui supplied coordinated battle outfits for the event 667.
Fruit Sevii Islands Summer Camp
- Nana invited the school to undertake practical training that could help improve the islands' fruit cultivation 687.
- Shen Qi, the teachers, and approximately a hundred students traveled there by bus and boat 731.
- The visit paired agricultural experience for students with investigation of the islands' development potential 687 731.
Funding and Partnerships
| Support or Project | Details |
|---|---|
| Student Support | Gui lends Xiao Ming 100,000 b and offers further guidance when teachers can no longer meet Shen Qi's needs 242. |
| Race Publicity and Sponsorship | Gui uses Shen Qi's entries to promote the school and seek support for renovations and enrollment growth 159 339. |
| Road Improvements | Donations, Gui's contributions, and Sevii Islands authorities fund paving the road to campus 552. |
| Aerodactyl Skeleton Display | Shen Qi loans the fossil to the school and invites visitors without disrupting lessons. Media and academic interest provide prospects for additional funding 395 397. |
| Pokémon Resort | A joint venture led by the Pokémon Breeders Association and Aether Foundation. The school holds a 10% stake, entitling it to the same share of future dividends while requiring it to bear 10% of initial costs 707. |
- Two teachers holding Pokémon Breeder Licenses make the school's participation in the resort viable, with part-time management planned for its early stages 703.
- Even the school's one-tenth share of resort construction expenses places considerable pressure on its finances 707.
- Shen Qi declines Sayaka's offer of investment, favoring projects that raise the school's capabilities gradually rather than expanding beyond what it can manage 695.
Alternate World Line
- Pokémon High School does not exist in the Mega Evolution World Line; Shen Qi's counterpart attended Kumquat High School instead 444.
- That world line's Principal Gui runs Twin School in the Seafoam Islands, an elementary and middle school that also shelters injured and abandoned Pokémon 510 512.
- Twin School has roughly three thousand students—about ten times Pokémon High School's population in the comparison 512.
