Background / History
Education and Fighting Dojo Career
Wude studied a data research-related subject at Celadon City University and was Mizuki’s senior. After graduating, he unexpectedly became a karate Gym Leader, training Fighting-type Pokémon and Trainers classified as “Karate Kings” and “Battle Girls” 163.
He also graduated from the Fighting Dojo and subsequently trained at Hoenn’s Dewford Gym before returning. The Miracle Company, a major financial backer of the Fighting Dojo, hired him as its master and a club driver 204 529.
Although the Fighting Dojo met Gym-level standards, it could not award Saffron City’s Gold Badge while Sabrina’s institution held official recognition. Wude openly aspired to make the dojo Saffron City’s official Gym 203.
Meeting Shen Qi
Wude met Shen Qi through a Regular Race in Saffron City. He introduced himself as the Fighting Dojo’s master and soon included Shen Qi in meals, bathhouse visits, and outings with the dojo’s disciples 203 204 205.
Ruins Valley Ambush — Mega Evolution World Line
Wude had offered the native Shen Qi an opportunity to take the Fighting Dojo’s entrance assessment on Kumquat Island, while warning that his strength might not be sufficient. After Shen Qi disappeared during training in Ruins Valley, Wude felt responsible and entered the valley to search for him 452.
There, Domino’s Tulip Squad ambushed him. Wude escaped, but he and several of his main Pokémon suffered severe, irreversible injuries. Domino killed Poliwrath, one of his ace Pokémon 452 524.
Wude stepped down from leadership and spent two years recovering. He retained the title of Honorary Gym Leader, occasionally taught students, and entered exhibition-style Regular Races, but avoided Class T competitions and close teacher–student commitments 452.
Taking Shen Qi as His Student
Learning that Shen Qi was alive lifted much of Wude’s guilt. He celebrated the news by drinking himself senseless, and Shen Qi’s outstanding entrance assessment subsequently gave him further cause for pride 452.
After Shen Qi defeated a coach, Wude offered personal instruction and accommodation in his own home. He also urged his new student to help the dojo surpass Sabrina’s Gym 449.
His teaching included demonstrating Mega Evolution with Blaziken despite the strain on his injured body. He later advised Shen Qi to choose training equipment suited to his current ability rather than simply buying the most powerful options 452 490.
Confronting the Tulip Squad
An old friend in the International Police alerted Wude that action against the Tulip Squad was approaching. Although he wanted to join the operation, he restrained himself, recognizing both his limitations and the risk of causing trouble for his informant 522.
After the arrests, Shen Qi arranged for Wude to see the prisoners at the Pewter City Security Bureau. Wude refused to give Domino the angry reaction she sought, calmly condemned the squad’s crimes, and thanked Sabrina for arranging the visit. Once outside, however, he crouched down and cried for several minutes 523 524 525.
Final Challenge to Sabrina
Wude planned to enter the Pokémon World Championships in the hope of drawing Sabrina as an opponent. He knew he was unlikely to advance even from the Normal Class, but wanted one final all-out battle before his steadily declining health left him weaker 523 524.
Shen Qi separately secured Sabrina’s promise to consider Wude’s challenge if he earned the Saffron Badge within one year. After Shen Qi earned the Gold Badge within three months of joining the dojo, Wude publicly challenged Sabrina, and she accepted while acknowledging the merits of his teaching 492 534.
Wude prepared through intensive rehabilitation, tactical study, and advice from Xinyan and retired Fighting Dojo Gym Leaders. The match drew widespread attention, with Sabrina reserving the Saffron Gym’s first battlefield for it 534 537 538.
After the Match and Return to the Normal World Line
Wude lost the battle and collapsed immediately afterward. Sabrina had medical personnel, including Jinfu Clinic doctors, ready to treat him and his Pokémon. He entered intensive care but was later declared out of immediate danger 544.
Before the match, Wude had set aside assets for his Pokémon and decided to donate the rest to the Fighting Dojo. He eventually regained consciousness, saw Shen Qi’s Gold Badge beside his bed, and murmured, “Take care. Take care...” 544 546.
After returning to the Normal World Line, Shen Qi visited that world’s Wude. Unlike his alternate counterpart, this Wude was still the dojo’s Gym Leader and was recovering his competitive form after entering a July T2 event. He welcomed Shen Qi’s interest in battling and introduced his newly evolved Annihilape 550.
Appearance
- Build: Strongly muscled, with an exceptionally forceful bear hug 523.
- Hands: Broad and thickly calloused 203.
- Face: Rugged features that visibly soften when welcoming Shen Qi home 519.
Personality
Wude is outgoing, generous, and physically affectionate. He readily brings acquaintances into meals and bathhouse outings, offers Shen Qi a place in his home, and celebrates his successes with exuberant hugs. His concern can also become stern and paternal: after Shen Qi disappears without warning, Wude spends more than half an hour lecturing him about keeping the dojo informed 204 449 473 489.
His identity centers on testing himself in battle. Being treated primarily as a patient is painful to him, especially when sensible exercise can only slow his deterioration rather than reverse it. He knowingly accepts the possibility of a shortened life or disability in exchange for a final performance that will leave him without regrets 453 524 534.
Wude’s resolve does not make him emotionally untouched. He carries years of guilt over Shen Qi’s disappearance and grief over the destruction of his competitive career. His composure before the captured Tulip Squad is deliberate; only after leaving them does he allow himself to break down 452 525.
