The traitor who killed himself

Of course, this act is more of a way of remembering and commemorating.

By transferring most of his Informant to his colleagues, Vera, who is now practically a lone commander, will no longer see the marks left by his Informant.

His mind was simultaneously occupied with the past and the future.

Having been busy all year with hardly a day off, and now, with the consent of my beloved, I'm about to walk down the aisle.

In comparison, I clearly look forward to the latter.

As Vera strolled along at her leisurely pace, she passed through a small alley, her gaze unconsciously glancing inside before suddenly freezing.

He discovered the secret emergency communication code that was unique to him and his Informant!

This code is known only to two people!

He himself also...

Jon!

Jon, Informant agent and later Official Member of MI9, was witnessed by more than one person murdering his colleague and has now been confirmed as a traitor!

Vera remembered the Deputy Director's instructions and almost turned around and went back to MI9.

But he quickly stopped, subtly glancing around to make sure no one was nearby, a hint of hesitation flickering in his eyes.

Is that really the case?

This guy has been working hard for years, accumulating Merit through missions. Is his goal really to kill his colleagues after becoming a full-fledged official and then be hunted down?

Vera was unwilling to believe it.

After a moment of hesitation, he gritted his teeth and continued walking forward as if nothing had happened, pretending that he hadn't seen or known anything.

"Old man, what do you think of Jon?" Vera asked from the depths of her mind, releasing the Spirituality from the surface of the White Bone Ring.

Soon, an aged voice echoed in his mind:

"Jon?"

"That fish-catching kid who helped you solve the case?"

"Yes," Vera responded softly.

"I've never had any dealings with him, how would I know?" the aged voice said irritably. "But he seemed rather foolish back then."

Then it added:

"She's also quite stubborn, inflexible, and not the type to be easily swayed."

Vera nodded silently.

If we ignore the first sentence, their evaluations are quite similar.

He hesitated for a moment, then asked, "Do you think he might have murdered his colleague? Just based on your feeling from back then, without considering other factors."

The aged voice paused for a moment, then slowly spoke:

"Unlikely—if we disregard the fact that his experiences over the years have significantly changed his personality, I'm more inclined to believe that answer."

"Otherwise, he wouldn't have done something so foolish back then."

Upon hearing this, Vera nodded almost imperceptibly and let out a soft breath.

Hesitation returned to his face, ignoring the old voice's question, "What happened?" and using his Spirituality to shield it from his senses.

This time, he stood there in a daze for almost ten minutes.

Then, he suddenly turned around.

On the edge of the East Borough, in a secluded apartment building.

Vera's figure slowly emerged in the dark alleyway directly opposite.

He strode out of the darkness, glanced up to make sure the room he was going to was lit, and then walked toward the half-open door of the apartment building.

Saying it's semi-open might be a bit inappropriate.

Because it only has half a door left, it can't be closed at all.

The environment here is terrible.

The air in the hallway was musty and damp, mixed with the smell emanating from the public Washroom, making one want to cover their face and run away.

On her way upstairs, Vera encountered several residents.

They hurried along the corridor, covering their noses and lowering their heads, as if being chased by evil spirits and not wanting to stay outside for even a second longer.

He quickly reached the sixth floor, strode to the left, stopped at the single room at the far end, and knocked on the door six times, neither too hard nor too softly.

Three long, three short.

Footsteps sounded inside, followed by the door being pulled open. Vera walked in with a stern face, then turned to look at the young man who was closing the door and walking back.

"Jon, how dare you contact me?"

Without waiting for a reply, he sneered and pressed on, "Aren't you afraid that the person coming won't be me, but a member of the Internal Affairs Action Department?"

The Internal Affairs Action Department has a very broad scope of responsibilities; anything that happens within the territory of the Loen Kingdom falls under their jurisdiction.

This includes purging spies, eliminating unstable Beyonder, and hunting down internal traitors.

Jon, who looked like a young man, gave a wry smile:

"Afraid.

"But I have no other choice but to take a gamble."

Vera glanced expressionlessly at her former Informant and said in a deep voice:

"Then I regret to inform you:"

You lost the bet.

"If it were any other crime, considering our past relationship, I might not stand idly by and would be willing to offer some assistance, but you..."

Jon suppressed his bitterness and abruptly interrupted:

"Yes, I did kill two ' Interrogator '."

"But have you ever thought about why I killed them?"

"Them...

"They are not worthy of being my colleagues, and I will never acknowledge them as such!"

As he spoke, he took a deep breath and asked in return:

Do you still remember the Missing Persons case you were asked to investigate?

Vera's heart skipped a beat, and she couldn't help but frown:

This mission has been terminated.

"I warned you before not to investigate this matter any further! Did you still investigate privately and discover something?"

Jon's expression turned bitter, and he nodded, saying:

That's right.

"You did warn me, giving the reason that 'this matter is very complex, and a slight misstep could drag me into Abyss.'"

You told me that "only by living can one realize greater value," and promised to reopen the investigation into this matter once you are able to do so.

"But, Lieutenant Colonel..."

As he said this, a meaningful smile appeared at the corner of his mouth, and he asked softly, "When will I be considered capable?"

"Clearly you don't think Sequence 5 counts, so it's Sequence 4?"

"You won't see it, will you? I've heard that Sequence 4 is just the starting point for Demigod and gods; above that is Sequence 3, and above that are Angel and God."

"Are they considered capable?"

"But you know what happened in the Factory District and the East Borough a while ago."

"Yes, that's right. The Sacrificial Ritual of the Evil God's Believer were stopped, and then what? The number of people who lost their lives was definitely no less than 20,000!"

Who will pay for their deaths?

Vera paused for a moment, then asked in a low voice:

What exactly are you trying to say?

"What I want to say is, in my opinion, your promise is nothing more than a way to make yourself feel better after choosing to run away," Jon said, enunciating each word clearly. "Even if you eventually uncover the Truth and kill the real culprit, the innocent people who have already died can never be brought back to life."

Some things, once they're too late, are simply too late!

"But this is just a difference of opinion. In my heart, you are still the savior who descended from the sky back then, full of Justice."

"Judging from the current situation:"

"Compared to my overconfident insistence, perhaps your choice is the right one."

"I firmly believe that one day in the future you will keep your promise, so... with no other way out, I've decided to contribute my last bit of strength."

He finished speaking slowly, glanced at Vera with a look of relief and liberation, and suddenly slapped his own head.
