A grand circus performance
"A stage, what else could it be?" the man in the red headscarf chuckled.
After saying that, he casually remarked:
"Unfortunately, we arrived too late at noon. We heard that helping set up the stage for an afternoon earns us the equivalent of two days' wages for the movers."
"Who says otherwise? I should have skipped dinner," the middle-aged man chimed in, sounding quite annoyed.
The other person said irritably:
"Alright, what's the point of saying all this now? Quickly find a place to hide the work tools, and then go find the location of our village."
"If you dawdle any longer, all the free food might be gone."
Free food? Is this some kind of celebration by the new Lord? Matthew, having guessed a little, was instantly filled with anticipation.
He had been working in the fields all afternoon and was starving...
Guided by the clergy, Matthew and his companions successfully arrived at the area where the villagers of Graystone Village lived, and each went their separate ways to find their families.
"I didn't expect the new Lord to be so generous... to give us farmers white bread, meat pies, and sweet Milk..." With this thought in mind, Matthew carefully protected the food in his arms, his eyes constantly wandering through the crowd, when he suddenly stopped.
He saw his youngest son being held in his wife's arms, wriggling and trying to break free. Upon seeing him, he immediately raised his arm in delight.
"Daddy!" the youngest son called out in his childish voice.
Matthew exclaimed "Hey!" and strode over with a bright smile.
"Have the boys eaten enough?" He saw his wife holding an empty bottle, so he didn't bother with the pointless questions about whether they had received free food.
As he spoke, he took out meat pies from his pocket and had his eldest son distribute them to everyone.
"You eat, Dad, we're full." The eldest son, who was already fifteen or sixteen, shook his head in refusal, while the second son, who was just over ten, added:
"Really, my older brother and I went back and forth to collect it three times."
"The Lord's men said that as long as we don't waste food, we can take as much as we want if we're not full, and if there's any left over, we can share some with them when we leave."
Matthew looked at his wife in surprise, and saw her nod with a smile, "That's right, don't worry about us, eat as you please."
Is this kind of food something you can just eat whenever you want? Doesn't this Lord care about his own life anymore? He smelled the fragrant meat pie in his hand and felt like he was dreaming.
However, physiological instincts prevailed over the desire for knowledge. Hungry Matthew swallowed hard and began to eat heartily.
Beside him, his wife held their youngest son and looked at him with a smile, while his two older sons stared intently toward the stage.
Matthew was indeed starving. He devoured a meat pie in less than half a minute, then choked and hiccuped repeatedly. He had to drink half a bottle of Milk to recover.
He glanced at his two sons, then at the stage, and looked at his wife.
Without needing to speak, his wife, who had borne him three sons, understood his meaning and spoke with a similar tone of expectation:
"I heard it's Circus Troupe hired by Lord [Lord's Name]."
"Circus Troupe?" Matthew was taken aback. "Such a big stage?"
Before he had so many sons, he had taken his wife to see the Circus Troupe a few times by Public Carriage in Backlund.
In my memory, the stage for the performances was pitifully small; any slightly larger animal moving around on it would feel cramped.
The wife explained with a smile:
"A Circus Troupe certainly doesn't need such a large stage."
"When I was getting the food, I overheard others saying that Lord apparently booked over a dozen Circus Troupe to perform together. I don't know if it's true or not, but I think it might be."
Hiring a dozen or so Circus Troupe to perform for a group of farmers and their families? Matthew, still bewildered, took a bite of soft, sweet white bread, the same question returning to him:
How much will this cost? Won't Lord live a normal life?
As the last rays of the setting sun faded, night fell like a curtain, plunging the Church square into darkness, except for the stage, which shone as brightly as Daylight under the high-powered lights.
A middle-aged man in a sharp suit, with his hair slicked back and resembling a butler, gave a brief speech through a megaphone.
Suddenly, the stage went dark, and the villagers below gasped in surprise. Then the lights came back on, and a dozen or so gorillas stood in a row.
The performance has officially begun.
More than ten tigers lined up in an orderly fashion to jump through hoops of fire, monkeys raced on unicycles, Curly-Haired Baboon performed a collective hula dance, and Clown competed on a tightrope, performing various difficult moves while tossing Small Ball into the air, drawing cheers from the audience.
Not to mention the villagers who rarely leave the village and make a living by farming and logging, even the clergy and stewards were stunned.
They've seen circus performances before.
But this is truly the first time I've ever seen a circus performance like this. "Great!"
"One more!"
Matthew cheered loudly, almost jumping up to clap his hands.
Noticing the strange gazes cast upon them from nearby and even further away, his soon-to-be-adult eldest son and his already sensible second son exchanged a strange look.
Then, they quietly and discreetly moved away from their father.
His wife glared at their two sons, a hint of unease flashing across her face. After a moment's hesitation, she did the same.
"Bang!"
The stage lights went out again.
"Why didn't we see Trick tricks?" Matthew muttered, finally able to catch his breath, as he turned to talk to his family.
Why are you all so far away from me?

"Your show is next." Lorry smiled at Fors.
Are you nervous?
Wearing a black Witch's robe and with her face covered in colorful paint, Fors glared at the person who made the sarcastic remark and kept taking deep breaths to calm herself down.
The thought of so many people outside made her palms feel cold.
Those were villagers from more than a dozen nearby villages!
If a performance goes wrong, even if no one recognizes you, the Awkwardness of being in public is enough to make you feel ashamed.
In fact, if she hadn't seen it with her own eyes, she would never have imagined that a small Church in such a place could have Mass Square that could accommodate more than 30,000 people.
As she was thinking, she suddenly felt her hands, which were somewhat out of her control, being enveloped by an even larger hand, and a gentle warmth kept flowing in.
It dispelled the chill and chased away the tension.
Lorry chuckled softly, "The reason we chose the countryside instead of Backlund is to remove as many restrictions as possible, so you can use your abilities as you please."
"I've already checked; there are no Beyonder here."
"And I'm here too."
Feeling inexplicably at ease and regaining her courage, Fors turned to look at Lorry, who was covered in paint and dressed Clown, took a deep breath, and nodded slightly.
"I'm going on stage."
