Personality
Ash is enthusiastic, competitive, and easily provoked by Gary’s teasing. Their rivalry dates back to childhood: Ash says Gary has been beating him in every possible way since he was five, yet he has never accepted that as a reason to give up 116 308 310.
His attachment to Pokémon shapes his training philosophy. He initially argues that evolution should be the Pokémon’s choice and that hard work can overcome an evolved opponent. Gary criticizes this early approach as overly indulgent, distinguishing affection from the responsibility to provide effective training 51. Ash later clashes with Paul over the relative importance of strength and bonds 530.
Ash’s loyalty is physical as well as emotional. He protects Pikachu during a Spearow attack, refuses to release Pikachu’s paw while hanging from a cliff, and drags his frozen Charizard toward medical help despite the rope injuring his shoulders 8 126 340.
His response to defeat gradually matures. Early losses leave him angry or devastated; after the Hoenn semifinal, he comforts Pikachu, congratulates Gary, and asks for another battle. The narration explicitly identifies his growing ability to turn disappointment into motivation 5 51 509 510.
Abilities & Skills
High-Speed Battling
- Specializes in close combat and swift attacks, frequently opening with Pikachu’s Quick Attack 51 119 507.

- Combines moves aggressively, including Pikachu’s Thunder followed by Quick Attack against Gary’s Milotic 508.

Pokémon Handling and Team Selection

- Shows practical experience as a traveler; Professor Birch recommends him as a companion who can help May learn a Trainer’s professionalism 341.
- Still depends substantially on companions for Pokémon care and everyday support during his early journeys 51 341.
Physical Endurance
- Pulls a handcart carrying Charizard and the ice surrounding it, continuing despite abrasions from the hauling rope 126.
- Holds Pikachu while clinging to a small tree at a cliff edge, enduring a bite from the rampaging Pokémon until Gary’s Electivire rescues them 340.
Singing
- Helps record the opening and ending songs for Gary’s game project 267 273.
- Delivers an emotional rendition of “Rival” after Gary tells him to draw on his battles and friendship 267.

History
Starting His Journey
Ash oversleeps after spending the night dreaming about starter Pokémon. Arriving at Professor Oak’s laboratory barefoot and in pajamas, he discovers that Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur have already been taken. Gary asks Oak to help him, and Ash eagerly accepts the remaining Pikachu despite its behavioral problems 4 5.
Pikachu shocks him when he attempts an immediate hug. Their first battle against Gary ends in defeat, but Ash promptly promises a rematch. Soon afterward, Officer Jenny brings him and a badly injured Pikachu to a Pokémon Center following an attack by wild Spearow; Gary briefly reassures him while Pikachu receives emergency treatment 5 8.
Kanto and the Indigo League
At the Celadon Gym, Gary exposes Ash’s disguise and joins Erika in teasing him. Their disagreement over training leads to a three-on-three battle in which Scizor defeats Pikachu, Squirtle, and Charmander. Gary then helps Ash to his feet and urges him to improve alongside his Pokémon 51.
Ash befriends Ritchie after they repel Team Rocket together. Being drawn against his new friend initially upsets him, but Gary reminds him that respecting an opponent means giving the battle his full effort 123.
After Ash’s elimination, Gary confronts Charizard’s arrogance and has it defeated and frozen. Ash’s struggle to transport Charizard to the Pokémon Center reminds the Pokémon of the care its Trainer has always shown it 124 126.
Orange Islands and Johto
Ash accepts Professor Oak’s errand to visit Professor Ivy after Gary passes the assignment to him. Following his Orange League success, he challenges Gary before Gary’s departure for Johto, only for Golduck to defeat Charizard 139 161.
His own Johto journey begins with an embarrassing rescue. Ash refuses advice to rent a Hoothoot before entering the Forest of Mist, becomes trapped with Brock and Misty, and calls Gary for help. Gary locates them and breaks the Ghost Pokémon’s illusion with Togepi’s Foresight 183.
Before their Silver Conference match, Ash and Brock stay up late studying Gary’s extensive roster. Although decisively outmatched, Ash remains eager to continue battling and promises further training afterward 309 311.
Hoenn and the Battle Frontier
Early in Hoenn, Gary and Electivire rescue Ash and Pikachu from a cliff and remove Pikachu’s excess electricity 340. Ash subsequently suffers losses to Gary’s student Brendan, making the gap between himself and his childhood rival especially difficult to accept 361 381.
Their Hoenn semifinal demonstrates a change in preparation: Ash brings back powerful established partners rather than relying entirely on his newer catches. After losing, he accepts the result without abandoning his goal. Gary then gives him Scott’s contact information and recommends the Battle Frontier as a place to improve 506 509 510.
Sinnoh
Ash enters Sinnoh after conquering the Battle Frontier. Near Sandgem Town, he and Paul immediately clash over Pokémon training and begin a three-on-three battle 529 530.
He later partners with Brendan in a Double Battle tournament, losing the final to Gary and Paul. He also accompanies Gary and Shaymin into the Distortion World to help Giratina, before advancing through the Lily of the Valley Conference’s elimination rounds 568 587 596.
Future Side Story
A future-set side story depicts Ash married to Serena, with a son named Zhihui. He remains close to Gary and Paul, hosting their families for New Year celebrations 271.
Ash, Gary, and Paul are presented as three World Champions preparing for a televised exhibition. Ash’s selected Pokémon are Pikachu and Greninja; Infernape also appears among the Pokémon playing at his home 271.
