| Name | Bruno (希巴) |
| Species/Race | Human |
| Gender | Male |
| Affiliation | Kanto Pokémon League; Kanto Elite Four 20 |
| Occupation/Role | Elite Four member; Fighting-type specialist 20 |
| Ranking | Lowest-ranked member of Kanto’s Elite Four for several years 21 |
| First Appearance | Mentioned in Chapter 16; appears in person in Chapter 20 16 20 |
Background / History
Despite remaining at the bottom of Kanto’s Elite Four rankings, Bruno is an established world-class Trainer. In the previous year’s Kanto Elite Four ranking tournament, he fought four grueling rounds against Lance. Gary considers Bruno’s full-strength team far beyond his own capabilities at the time of the Vermilion City Masters Challenge 21.
Before challenging Lorelei, Bruno specially trained his ace, Hitmonchan, for their encounter. Lorelei had not faced him officially for more than six months and believed she would need new tactics to defeat him 19 21.
Appearance
- Physique: A heavily muscular man whose build repeatedly intimidates Gary 20 23.
- Tournament clothing: Wears a training uniform with a black belt for his match against Lorelei 20.
- Usual presentation: Often attends high-level matches bare-chested; he returns to this habit when approaching Gary after the tournament 20 23.
Personality
Bruno is confident, competitive, and proud of direct combat. He expects a demanding battle from Lorelei and becomes visibly pleased when Hitmonchan dominates the first half of their match. Lorelei describes him as oblivious and excessively muscle-minded, although he demonstrates genuine tactical skill under pressure 19 20 21 22.
Disruptive strategies test his patience. He protests Slowbro’s use of a carried Berry, incorrectly treating it as illegal medicine, and loses his composure against poison, evasion, and defensive moves. Gary’s repeated flinch strategy frustrates him enough to abandon their rental battle 22 24.
Bruno also becomes jealous after Lorelei praises Gary and mentions their stay at her villa. Misunderstanding the situation, he challenges Gary to prove that the younger Trainer deserves her favor. Nevertheless, he objectively acknowledges that Gary’s Pokémon are well raised 23.
Abilities & Skills
Fighting-Type Training
- Trains Fighting-type Pokémon for fast, forceful close-range attacks 19.
- Prepares Hitmonchan to use Thunder Punch offensively and Fire Punch defensively, threatening Lorelei’s Water-types while countering her cold-based attacks 21.
- Uses Agility to close the distance against opponents with superior ranged options 21.
- Commands a Focus Punch powerful enough to overcome Lapras’s Ice Beam and knock it out 21.
Tactical Adaptation
- Uses Hitmonlee’s long reach to stabilize the battle under Trick Room, then lands High Jump Kick immediately after the field effect expires 22.
- Selects Electabuzz in the rental battle because he expects Gary to counter his Fighting-type specialty with a Flying-type Pokémon 24.
- Reacts immediately when Thunder Wave fails, ordering Brick Break and then a retreat when Protect blocks the attack 24.
- Struggles against sustained disruption: Lorelei’s evasion-and-poison strategy and Gary’s flinch strategy both drive him to concede 22 24.
Partnership with Hitmonchan
- Calls Hitmonchan awake after Lapras puts it to sleep with Sing and lifts it with Psychic; Hitmonchan awakens and breaks free in midair 21.
- Describes their decisive Focus Punch as the product of ten years of shared training 21.
Martial Arts
- According to Lorelei, Bruno has experience with taekwondo and judo at black-belt level, as well as Jeet Kune Do and Chin Na Kung Fu 24.
- His martial-arts background makes Gary reluctant to seek Fighting-type instruction from him immediately after their contentious rental match 24.
Pokémon
Personal Team
| Pokémon | Documented level | Role and performance |
|---|---|---|
| Hitmonchan | 82 21 | Bruno’s ace; larger and more muscular than an ordinary Hitmonchan. Defeats Lapras, Cloyster, and Jynx before falling to poison while unable to hit Starmie 21 22. |
| Machoke ×2 | Not stated | Both are defeated by Slowbro during Trick Room. Bruno uses the second to try to outlast the field effect 22. |
| Hitmonlee | Not stated | Defeats Slowbro with High Jump Kick after Trick Room ends, then falls to Starmie’s Swift 22. |
| Machamp | Not stated | His final trump card against Lorelei. Attempts Brick Break against Starmie but is thwarted by Minimize and Toxic 22. |
Rental Pokémon
| Pokémon | Battle | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Electabuzz | One-on-one Battle Tower match against Gary’s rental Chansey | Uses Thunder Wave and Brick Break, but is repeatedly flinched by Chansey’s attacks. Bruno forfeits 24. |
Relationships
- Lorelei — Fellow Kanto Elite Four member and ranking rival. Bruno tries to take her position, then becomes jealous of her praise for Gary 21 22 23.
- Gary Oak — The strategist behind Lorelei’s victory. Bruno requests a friendly rental battle to test him, acknowledges the condition of his Pokémon, and ultimately loses by forfeit 23 24.
- Lance — Fellow League combatant whom Bruno fought in the previous year’s ranking tournament. Both later receive Damaranch’s reprimand over Team Rocket 21 34.
- Damaranch — Pokémon League chairman, who holds Bruno and Lance accountable for Team Rocket’s continued activity in Kanto 34.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Vermilion City Masters Challenge
- Challenges Lorelei in a scheduled six-on-six Elite Four match at Vermilion City’s Battle Tower, with her ranking position at stake 16 19 21.
- Takes a commanding early lead when Hitmonchan defeats three of Lorelei’s strongest attackers 22.
- Faces a reversal when Lorelei introduces Gary’s strategies through Slowbro and Starmie: Trick Room, carried Berries, poison, defensive moves, and evasion 22.
- Loses the will to battle against Starmie’s Minimize and Toxic, allowing Lorelei to defend her position 22.
Rental Battle with Gary
- Meets Gary at a café after Lorelei introduces him as her tactical adviser. Proposes using Battle Tower rentals because his own Pokémon have just completed their match 23.
- Faces Gary under roughly equal-strength conditions; the facility’s rental Pokémon average around levels 35–40 23.
- Forfeits when Chansey’s Serene Grace-assisted Rock Slide and Zen Headbutt repeatedly prevent Electabuzz from acting 24.
League Response to Team Rocket
- Is summoned alongside Lance after the violent Team Rocket incident at the Sea Cottage. Damaranch berates both men and strikes their knees while demanding action 34.
- Neither Bruno nor Lance can confidently claim victory over Giovanni in a one-on-one battle. Agatha proposes a coordinated crackdown involving police forces and at least two Elite Four members; Bruno’s participation in the eventual operation is not shown in the supplied account 34.
