Background / History
Eevee was held at the Eevee Research Institute as Test Subject No. 003. The institute treated her as experimental material, keeping her in an iron cage and subjecting her to repeated blood tests 1 3.
Gary targeted the institute’s unusual Eevee while preparing for his Pokémon journey. After publishing research on Eevee’s evolutionary possibilities, he asked Professor Oak to arrange her transfer. Oak used his connections to obtain her, and Gary intended to pursue his goal of becoming the world’s strongest Champion with her beside him 1.
Life with Gary introduced Eevee to good food, freedom to run on grass, affectionate handling, and sleeping beneath a soft quilt. She came to regard him as a tenderhearted god and wanted to remain with him forever 3.
Appearance
- Eyes: Large and sparkling, compared to black pearls 3.
- Fur: Very soft, particularly around the neck; petting it helped Caitlin relax 31.
- Tail: Fluffy enough to remain conspicuous while Eevee buried herself in beach sand 18.
- Physical condition: Rainbow University’s evaluators rated her build, coat color, strength, intelligence, and explosive power as models of perfection 42.
Personality
Eevee is affectionate and deeply attached to Gary. She frequently leaps into his arms, licks him, and rubs against him; even a two-hour separation prompts an enthusiastic reunion. Her devotion includes a determination to help him achieve his dream, not merely remain close to him 3 18 25.
Her normally gentle temperament changes sharply when Gary is threatened. When Pikachu tried to attack him, Eevee retaliated fiercely and stopped only after Gary picked her up. Faced with Caitlin’s intimidating Gallade and Alakazam, she remained frightened but resolved to bite them long enough to give Gary an escape opening 5 32.
She is considerate toward companions who have suffered, comforting Rhydon because she recognizes the ordeal of human experimentation. She also has a possessive and mischievous side: she resents Growlithe competing for Gary’s attention, bites Psyduck’s tail, and reacts angrily when Haunter soils her toy ball 14 17 27 35.
Abilities & Skills
Multi-Type Energy Control
The defining trait of the “Ditto Eevee” is her ability to skillfully wield energy from multiple types while remaining an Eevee 1 10.
- Moves recorded by Appraisal: Sand Attack, Sweet Kiss, Quick Attack, Reflect, Ember, Water Gun, Bullet Seed, Thunder Shock, Powder Snow, Dig, Shadow Ball, Confusion, and Dragon Breath. The displayed list is not exhaustive 3.
- Additional demonstrated moves: Thunderbolt, Detect, Bite, and Swift 10 35 43.
- Training origin: Gary credits years of persistent effort for her increasingly unusual repertoire 3.
- Limit: Her versatility does not guarantee victory; Water Gun failed to stop Team Rocket’s rampaging Rhydon 13.
Mutated Adaptability
Appraisal identifies Eevee’s Ability as Adaptability (mutated) 3.
- The supplied appraisal does not explain the mutation’s mechanics or quantify its effects 3.
Mobility and Combination Attacks
Eevee combines rapid movement, terrain use, and follow-up attacks rather than relying on a single move 5 10 43.
- Quick Attack: Dodges Onix’s Tackle and follows up against Pikachu after an underground ambush 5 10.
- Dig: Avoids Pikachu’s Thunder Shock and positions Eevee to intercept his attack on Gary 5.
- Water Gun: Floods Onix’s tunnel and later overpowers Graveler’s Rollout 10 43.
- Swift: Finishes Graveler after Water Gun drives it across the battlefield 43.
- Sand Attack: Interrupts Pikachu’s electrical discharge and strikes Onix in the face 5 10.
Detect
Eevee uses Detect to expose concealed Ghost-type Pokémon in Lavender Town’s Spirit Tower 35.
- Reveals Gastly and Haunter despite their attempts to hide 35.
- Gary brings her into the tower as a precaution against the ghosts’ tricks 35.
Equipment / Items
- White Premier Ball — Eevee’s Poké Ball, shown before Gary’s departure and used to send her into the Rainbow University battle 1 43.
Relationships
- Gary Oak — Trainer and central attachment. His care transformed her life after confinement at the institute; she protects him and actively wants to support his championship ambition 3 5 18 32.
- Charmander / Charmeleon — Teammate introduced as family. Charmander offered Eevee food, and the two accepted Gary’s instruction to eat, train, battle, and protect one another 3.
- Rhydon — Fellow survivor of human experimentation. Eevee lay beside him in the Pokémon Center and called softly to comfort him 14.
- Growlithe — Teammate and competitor for Gary’s affection. Eevee initially reacted jealously to his attention-seeking, but Growlithe later stood beside her when Caitlin’s Pokémon threatened Gary 17 32.
- Caitlin — Gary’s traveling companion. Eevee reluctantly agreed to let Caitlin pet her to ease their first meeting; Caitlin found her soft fur reassuring 31.
- Gengar — Initially a prankster opponent, later a teammate. Eevee bit his backside during the Spirit Tower encounter before Gary befriended and recruited him 35 36.

- The author explicitly changes Eevee to female in an aside in Chapter 20, explaining the conflicting gender references in earlier passages 20.
- Eevee, Growlithe, and Rhydon line up with their tails moving in synchrony, resembling the bars of a Wi-Fi signal 18.
