Background / History
Chen Yao initially believes himself to be a transmigrator from Earth. He remembers things he read and learned there, but neither his former name nor a personal life. After taking shape in the Great Wilderness, he travels toward the Stone Kingdom and develops his cultivation using the Eight Extraordinary Skills 2 3.
He chooses “Chen Yao” as a constructed identity, retaining the character Yao and selecting his surname by lot. For his public debut in the Void God Realm, he adopts “Wu Gensheng.” Despite possessing the Eight Extraordinary Skills, he has neither an inborn Treasure Bone nor accompanying Precious Blood, prompting him to pursue improvements rather than rely on the inheritances unchanged 2.
Twin Hands eventually allows him to recognize that his Earth memories appear artificially constructed. He concludes that someone placed those memories into a newly born soul, leaving him without a remembered past or known creator. Lord Bird, Lord Crystal Wall, and the Willow Deity separately question whether his Reincarnation Seal aura indicates a connection to an ancient reincarnated figure, but his identity remains unresolved 9 17 26.
Appearance
- Youthful body: Appears as a boy around Aman’s age, with a delicate face 3 6 11.
- Eyes: Become darker and deeper after his Blood Moving transcendence 4.
- Twin Hands manifestation: Pale-blue translucent tentacles emerge from his mind, while pale-red tentacles form from his flesh and blood qi; he does not know why they manifest as tentacles rather than palms 4.
- Cave heavens: His ten cave heavens appear as enormous black holes with revolving light, each wider than he is tall 6 14.
- Mutable appearance: Uses Twin Hands to disguise himself and later adopts complete identities from his reincarnation experiences through his Yang God body 12 45.
Personality
Chen Yao deliberately chooses a support-oriented path because he dislikes the pressure of frontline combat. He nevertheless demands exceptional companions: a fighter who cannot keep pace with him would defeat the purpose of recruiting one. His approach centers on disabling enemies so thoroughly that his allies can finish the battle 5 7 24.
He is cautious and calculating, using divination, concealment, and foreknowledge to prepare encounters. During his visit to Aman, he repeatedly stops her in time to examine her responses and intercept her alarms. His support also has boundaries: he promises not to violate her conscience, but refuses to spend resources on cultivation experiments without a concrete plan 6 7 8.
His humor is irreverent and frequently provocative. He mocks Shi Yi’s damaged eyesight, enjoys briefly overpowering the young Shi Hao, and accepts the Willow Deity’s praise without embarrassment. Beneath that manner, he is willing to risk lethal cultivation trials and reconsider his own techniques when better methods become available 11 15 18 20 50.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Hands and the Three Corpses Gods
Twin Hands combines the innate Soul-Clarity Art with the cultivated Soul-Refining Hand. Chen Yao uses it to refine life and spirit, control the Three Corpses Gods, and establish his Blood Moving transcendence 3 4.
- Keeps his spiritual seat clear while the Three Corpses Gods attempt to corrupt him 4.
- Merges those gods into his essence, qi, and spirit, allowing his blood qi to circulate and strengthen his physique without conscious direction 4.
- Alters his appearance and helps him detect inconsistencies in his implanted memories 12 26.
- Treats Shi Yunfeng’s body alongside sacred medicine; the village chief regains vigor and the Cave Heaven Realm 26.
- Later enables the Three Corpses Gods to sense and draw out negative emotions, including greed, anger, and ignorance 47.
Heavenly Demon Tribulation
Derived from his Blood Moving transcendence, Heavenly Demon Tribulation introduces disturbances into a target’s flesh and soul rather than merely causing conventional injuries 4 22.
- Produces paralysis, sleep, organ pathology, and cancer-like ailments during early testing 5.
- Damages Shi Yi’s eyesight by carrying primordial qi and the Three Corpses God into his body through Water Viscera Thunder 11.
- Triggers rejection between Shi Yi and Shi Hao’s transplanted Supreme Bone 22 23.
- Early limitation: Direct physical contact produces the strongest and longest-lasting effects. Ranged transmission is much weaker against extreme-realm prodigies; at equal cultivation, Shi Hao resists indirect infection entirely and recovers from contact-induced weakening within a few breaths 36.
Pu Demon Method and Heavenly Demon Seeds
Chen Yao obtains the Pu Demon King’s Immortal King-level cultivation method after the king is suppressed in the Void God Realm. He adapts its seeds to carry Heavenly Demon Tribulation 36.
- Uses foundation-tempering exercises to develop and test seeds containing weakening effects 36 37.
- Successfully replaces the need for bodily contact with Pu Demon Seeds, allowing clashes between Precious Techniques to transmit his effects 37.
- Experiments with blindness-inducing seeds that obstruct both physical eyes and primordial-spirit sight; earlier versions fail to grow 37.
- Strengthens his own body by identifying and eliminating flaws exposed through his study of external-demon symptoms 39.
- Plans to combine multiple negative conditions into a chain culminating in an instant-death effect; this remains a goal rather than a demonstrated ability 36.
Qi-State Origin-Flow
Qi-State Origin-Flow transforms one qi into myriad arts and returns manifested arts to their underlying energy. After Cave Heaven transcendence, it becomes a cultivated divine ability grounded in Chen Yao’s unified essence, qi, and spirit 10 18 19.
- Dissolves attacking divine light into ordinary primordial and spiritual energy 10.
- Disrupts enemies’ bone text, Precious Techniques, and bodily reinforcement 13.
- Reconstructs and improves Precious Techniques, increasing their power and variations beyond their original forms 19.
- Evolves the Five Thunder Orthodox Method from primordial qi and the five elements 19.
- Limit: Its dissolution has a finite speed. A stronger deathsworn counteracts it with abundant magical power, retaining roughly half his power 13.
- Later becomes the foundation for his planned fusion with the Eight-Nine Heavenly Art, rather than being discarded for that art’s superior transformations 50.
Grand Luo Insight
Initially used for perception and void-walking, Grand Luo Insight develops into a spacetime-related divine ability through his Spirit Transformation transcendence 6 16 45 50.
- Perceives hidden formations, cave-heaven structures, changes in heaven and earth, and Dao resonance 6 14 16.
- Allows movement through gaps in the void and concealed spatial layers 6 12 15.
- Early limitation: He cannot attack outside the void while walking through it and must emerge to interfere physically 13.
- After completion, disappears from perception so thoroughly that the Reincarnation Disk cannot locate him, including at the corresponding moments when looking back through time 45.
- Unites flesh and primordial spirit into a Yang God, permits changes into past reincarnation identities, and leaves finger marks on a spirit medicine as though they were pressed several seconds earlier 45.
Feng Hou's Mystic Gate
Feng Hou's Mystic Gate provides formation manipulation, divination, and specialized movement and time-control techniques 2 6 12.
- Exploits a Void God Realm record loophole to register 4,320 Precious Technique tricks 2.
- Adjusts existing formations without alerting them and filters out Aman’s alarm transmission 6.
- Uses Eight Gates Transport for repositioning and escape 6 9.
- Uses Time-Stopping Golden Shutter to freeze Aman while assessing her actions and to restrain Shi Yi during an ambush 6 11.
- Divines events through the Warlock Inner Landscape; he recognizes that increasingly significant people may become too difficult to divine or stop in time 12.
- Limit: Shi Yi destroys the Qimen formation with Two-Polarity Divine Light, preventing renewed suppression 11.
Reincarnation Immortal Qi
His strand of creation-origin immortal qi is identified by the Willow Deity as “reincarnation born of heaven and earth.” It bears a reincarnation seal mark studied by the Six Paths of Reincarnation Immortal King 16 17.
- Enhances medicines and spiritual rewards, raising their potency 3 6 14.
- Contributes to the Willow Deity’s renewed growth after she draws on it 17.
- Restores the dying Immortal Phoenix King through True Spirit rebirth as a phoenix egg 20.
- Gathers Kunpeng’s True Spirit and revives him as an egg 33.
- Risk: Chen Yao realizes that hostile Immortals or Immortal Kings could target him for its restorative potential 17.
Phoenix Precious Technique and Five-Elements Arts
The Immortal Phoenix King gives Chen Yao her Precious Technique after he helps her undergo rebirth. He focuses on its underlying five-elements cycles rather than its phoenix manifestations 20 24.
- Uses Grand Luo Insight to uncover the cycles of generation and restraint within the technique 24.
- Develops the concept of Five Elements Divine Light to combine five-elements order, Qi-State Origin-Flow, and Heavenly Demon Tribulation 24.
- Uses his five-elements method and Qi-State Origin-Flow to contain and overcome Shi Yi’s World-Opening Divine Light 39.
Other Extraordinary Skills
| Skill | Demonstrated use or later assessment |
|---|---|
| Six Treasury Immortal Thief | Converts nourishment and immortal qi, digests medicine, and conceals his presence from spiritual perception, hearing, and smell. Its digestion, longevity, and youth-preservation functions later become redundant beside his developed Qi-State Origin-Flow and Yang God body 3 6 14 50. |
| Heaven Communicating Talisman Art | Conceals his courtyard and assists infiltration; supplies movement, Immortal-Sealing, and Five Thunder talismans. Becomes his chosen Inscription cultivation path 3 10 11 13 50. |
| Divine Machine Hundred Refinements | Retains value for refining artifacts on the spot and reverse-refining opponents’ weapons, although Chen Yao considers half of its functions obsolete 50. |
| Spirit Summoning and Commanding | Has not been used by the time he reviews his arts; he considers it the first to become obsolete because of the setting’s numerous soul-controlling Precious Techniques 50. |
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Inheritance Light Cluster — Carries the techniques’ true-meaning legacies. Chen Yao initially activates some arts through it directly, then uses the Divine Guidance Chapter to convert Twin Hands and Qi-State Origin-Flow into independent origin runes 4 16 17.

- Devouring Pouch — Spatial-storage treasure used to conceal Aman’s message to Fourth Grandfather; he also gives one to Shi Hao 14 15.
- Treasure kitchen utensils — Meticulously refined pots, bowls, ladles, and basins that win over Shi Hao and help secure Stone Village’s welcome 15 16.
Relationships

- Lord Bird and Lord Crystal Wall — Immortal King allies whose identities he recognizes. They ask him to break records and gather treasures to nourish his immortal qi, hoping for future restoration 9 17.
- Immortal Phoenix King — Restored through his reincarnation immortal qi; gives him the Phoenix Precious Technique in return 20.
- Kunpeng — Revived by Chen Yao as an egg after he gathers the remaining True Spirit 33.
- Shi Yi — Rival and enemy. Chen Yao repeatedly weakens him, exposes the stolen Supreme Bone, and defeats him in their decisive duel 11 22 39.
- Shi Yunfeng — Stone Village’s chief, whom Chen Yao rejuvenates with Twin Hands and sacred medicine 26.
- Qin Hao — Helps expose Immortal Mountain’s manipulation of him. Qin Hao later loses to Chen Yao during his series of challenges in Stone Village 48.

Notable Quotes
“From this day onward, I am Wu Gensheng, Chen Yao.” 2
“What matters is choosing the path that suits you best. … There is only what suits you best, not some absolute best.” 8

Trivia
- “Wu Gensheng” is a primordial-qi riddle: He favors the interpretation that primordial qi arises from nothingness and is therefore “born without roots” 2.
- His initial ambition is deliberately extravagant: After judging the ordinary Eight Extraordinary Skills inadequate, he sets the goal of improving them into Immortal Emperor Arts 2.
- Foreknowledge is not omniscience: His immortal qi and its reincarnation properties are absent from his remembered version of the original story, repeatedly leaving him unable to explain his own circumstances 17 44.
- “Extreme Realm Method” is his proposed academic name for the Chaotic Ancient cultivation system, emphasizing the breaking and transcendence of each realm’s limits 4.
