Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Established immortal sect 1 Already possessed over six thousand years of history, numerous Daoist inheritances, and a broad disciple-recruitment system.
Sixth-Realm leadership and expanded senior ranks 545 Ji Hehe was a Sixth-Realm Heavenly Immortal, while Cheng Xinzhan was a Fifth-Realm cultivator of Union with the Dao. The ancestral headquarters had nine publicly known Fourth-Realm cultivators, including two who had completed all Three Calamities; this count excluded the leaders of its subordinate sect.
Three Dragons ridges become dragon veins 690 During Cheng Xinzhan’s exposition, the ridges acquired complete dragon forms and generated crouching dragon imperial-response baleful intent. These changes supplied the foundation for a future Paradise Secret Realm.
Four additional Fifth-Realm cultivators 698 Fu Shouzhen, Su Duyi, Zhao Wuji, and Chen Suxing achieved Union with the Dao. The sect had produced eight Fifth-Realm cultivators over three hundred years without losing any of those eight to the Three Calamities.

Background and History

Ge Hong initially practiced External Alchemy, medicine, and religious teaching at Luofu Mountain. As his cultivation turned toward Internal Alchemy and expanded to encompass numerous traditions, he settled at Three Pure Ones Mountain and founded the Ten Thousand Methods School. He later ascended from the mountain at an imperial summons. Luofu and Three Pure Ones Mountain consequently shared a founder and spiritual origins, but developed distinct teachings without either becoming subordinate to the other 419.

By the opening of the story, Three Pure Ones Mountain and Dragon-Tiger Mountain stood foremost among Yu Zhang’s sacred Daoist peaks. Unlike Dragon-Tiger Mountain’s restrictive admission practices, Three Pure Ones Mountain accepted disciples broadly and maintained a public temple serving ordinary worshippers. Cheng Yunqi entered through this gateway at fifteen, during the first public recruitment held in twenty-eight years 1.

The sect’s later expansion was closely connected to Cheng Xinzhan’s scholarship, demon-slaying, and establishment of new lineages. His accomplishments helped raise it from an eminent ancestral seat to the foremost Daoist sect. At his founding ceremony, the sect formally honored him as its Dharma Patriarch of Restoration and announced that his portrait would hang in the Patriarch Hall 688 697.

Geography and Access

Mountain Domain

  • Cloud-covered interior: Overlapping peaks and ridges lie behind layers of clouds that appear vastly thicker from within than from outside. Ordinary seekers searching Graceful Splendor Mountain cannot find the immortal domain unaided 2 8.
  • Mountain gate: A broad green lawn projects from the eastern cloud sea, with enough space for dozens of flying shuttles and Cloud Vessels. Behind it, two mountains form an enormous gate 143 332.
  • Orange Sea: The cloud sea east of Eastern Heaven Road turns orange at sunrise. Three dragon-shaped ridges rising above it create the celebrated views Three Dragons Emerging from the Sea and Three Dragons Contesting the Pearl 572.
  • Neighboring territory: Luofu Mountain is separated from the sect by Meiling. Purple Tenuity Mountain, headquarters of the Haoran Alliance, is a little over two hours away by leisurely cloud travel 174 419.
  • Engineered landscape: The sect can reorganize mountains, rivers, earth veins, and earth qi. One patriarch transported a southwestern volcano into Yu Zhang and connected it to the mountain’s earth veins so that it continued drawing underground earthfire 86 339.

Principal Sites

Site Function or significance
Graceful Splendor Mountain Mortal-facing gateway. Its eastern, western, and northern slopes are sheer cliffs; the accessible path climbs its gentler southern slope 1.
Rainfall Temple Also called Abundant Rain Temple and Jade Spirit Temple. Provides blessings, dream interpretation, talismans, medical treatment, funerary rites, and recruitment arrangements 1 200.
Hall of Immortal Ge Houses Ge Hong’s statue. A hand seal and incantation open its rear wall onto the cloud sea leading to the immortal mountain 1.
Gathered Spirit Mountain Shares a root with Graceful Splendor Mountain; houses the sect entrance and the External Affairs Court’s headquarters 2 143.
Ten Thousand Scepters Facing Heaven Peak Also called Little Ten Thousand Mountain; residence of registered disciples 2.
Five Palaces Mountain Prepared by gathering earth qi to support the sprouted Ginseng Fruit pit brought back by Cheng Xinzhan 126.
Changes Garden Distinguished-guest residence on the head of the central dragon-shaped ridge. Hosts major gatherings, including the Ginseng Dharma Assembly 572 688.
Three Pure Ones Heaven Secret Realm Used to treat disciples bearing spiritual brands associated with Dragon-Tiger Mountain, including cases requiring the shattering and reforging of Primordial Spirits 139.
Patriarch Hall Houses the honored patriarchs’ portraits; Cheng Xinzhan’s inclusion is announced when he becomes Dharma Patriarch of Restoration 697.

Three Dragons Ridges

  • Three long eastern ridges run east to west above the clouds. Their ample space and proximity to the gate make them suitable for recruitment, branch assessments, Dharma assemblies, and guest receptions 688.
  • During Cheng Xinzhan’s teaching, stone and earth shifted into complete crouching dragons, including heads, horns, manes, claws, and tails 690.
  • Their spiritual veins became dragon veins and produced baleful intent, giving the sect the resources needed to develop a Paradise Secret Realm with supporting formations 690.

Organization and Governance

Administrative Peaks

The three highest peaks form the sect’s administrative center. Everyone cultivating or working there is at least in the Second Realm 86.

Peak Respectful name Responsibilities
Jade Capital Peak Grandfather Mountain Routine internal and external affairs. Oversees offices and courts for general administration, food, teaching, merit, performance, crafts, medicine, and external affairs 86.
Jade Splendor Peak Message-Receiving Mountain Emergency command, with authority to mobilize all sect personnel and resources. Its Red Dust Hall handles mortal affairs 86.
Jade Void Peak Cloud-Tuning Mountain Defense and long-term planning, including the protective formation, magical restrictions, mountain placement, and river courses 86.

Authority and Assessments

  • Transmission takes priority: Masters’ instructions take precedence over those of sect leaders and mountain lords, which in turn take precedence over administrative office heads. The rule protects master–disciple transmission from being displaced by bureaucratic ambition 142.
  • Merit and conduct are assessed: Disciples’ missions receive formal ratings, and cultivation is subject to assessments of merit and fault. Limited aptitude is distinguished from idleness or unwillingness to improve 86 660.
  • Office-worker representation: Ji Hehe approved Cheng Xinzhan’s proposal for an Office-Worker Governance to represent part-time office workers. Wen Qingzhang was tasked with organizing workers and branch groups 143.
  • Leadership succession: On becoming sect leader, Dong Shouren retained the existing sect appointments 613.

Teachings and Dao Lineages

Foundational Doctrine

  • Internal Alchemy is the foundation: Other arts are cultivated alongside it to illuminate and enrich one another, rather than replace the central practice 147 207.
  • Preservation and innovation: The school explicitly seeks to recover lost teachings of past sages and create methods not previously known 207.
  • Equal reverence for the Three Pure Ones: The sect does not elevate one of the three sages above the others 207.
  • Broad curriculum: Its teachings include external alchemy, swordsmanship, talismans, formations, astrology, thunder arts, bodily refinement, medicine, and Corpse Raising 1.
  • Leadership cultivation: Sect leaders traditionally cultivate the Five Elements and Yin-Yang deeply; Cheng Xinzhan’s balanced studies are recognized as preparation for a possible leadership role 86.
  • Nonhuman membership: Admission is not restricted to humans. Gu Xinshu is a Green Chi-Dragon disciple, while Lord Kui Mountain previously served as Pivot Mountain’s lord and as a vice sect master 166 258.

Specialized Lineages

Distinctive Methods

Flying Sword Arts

The Sword-Casting lineage is regarded as foremost in Flying Sword Arts among the Eastern Daoist Sect 235.

  • Sword nurturing incorporates Internal Alchemy and the Five Thunders, including celestial-circuit circulation, lead and mercury, astral and baleful energies, and thunderous sound and light 235.
  • Sword movement emphasizes nimbleness, responsiveness, and free advance or retreat rather than solely forceful, mountain-cleaving attacks 235.
  • Cheng Xinzhan’s performance at the Sword-Dueling Gathering spread the sect’s reputation for swordsmanship 109.

Three Beget All Things Talisman

  • A unique talisman formed from Pure Spirit Qi, appearing as clear light between three raised fingers 146.
  • Serves as a traveling disciple’s credential; outsiders cannot produce it without the required cultivation 146.
  • The additional effects of Pure Spirit Qi when combined with the sect’s secret methods are not publicly known 146.

One Qi Transforms into the Three Pure Ones

  • A patriarchal inheritance passed down for nearly six thousand years 549.
  • Cheng Xinzhan discovered that Zhang Sanfeng’s taiji guiding exercises could raise an incarnation body’s previous upper limit, resolving a longstanding limitation of the method 549.

Recruitment

Requirement or procedure Details
Preparatory exercise Mortal temples freely distribute the Meridian-Opening and Muscle-Stretching Exercise, which regulates qi and blood, nourishes organs, and opens meridians 1.
Spiritual qualification Candidates must cultivate clear qi, identified elsewhere as Pure Spirit Qi, while still mortal 1 146.
Age limit Sixteen or younger 1 443.
Local examination schedule Irregular: several examinations may occur in one year, while another interval may last two hundred years 1.
Outlying recruitment Once every Jiazi cycle—sixty years—temples and mountain sects gather qualified children from seven surrounding regions 443.
Participating regions Kuaiji, Eight Min, Three Xiang, Yuyang, Qingzhou, Jingchu, and Jinling 443.
Registered-disciple residence Little Ten Thousand Mountain provides cave dwellings for registered disciples 2.
  • The public exercise benefits ordinary practitioners even if they never develop Pure Spirit Qi; exceptional practitioners gain resistance to poisons and illness 1.
  • Recruitment eligibility does not guarantee admission. Of the more than one hundred candidates who entered with Cheng Yunqi, only he remained 200.

Defenses and Spiritual Resources

Mountain-Protecting Formation

The Six Dragons Returning the Sun Nine Heavens Cloud Restriction Formation is renowned alongside Emei’s Two Principles Dust Formation 59.

  • Accidental intruders are guided back out of the mist to their starting point 143.
  • Repeated attempts to force entry result in progressively longer confinement; attacking the clouds causes the attacker to be swept inside without emerging 143.
  • The array joins the surrounding clouds and extends into the Third Heaven, allowing it to conceal ascension phenomena completely 409.
  • During Cheng Xinzhan’s core formation, the formation helped contain the extraordinary vitality that threatened to escape the grounds 172.
  • A Heavenly Gang is rumored to be hidden within it 59.

Ginseng Fruit Tree

  • Cheng Xinzhan brought back a sprouted Ginseng Fruit pit and entrusted it to the sect 126.
  • The leadership reorganized the landscape and concentrated earth qi at Five Palaces Mountain before planting it. Shi Tongxuan volunteered to remain as its guardian 126.
  • Its existence became widely known within the ancestral headquarters during the Ginseng Dharma Assembly at Changes Garden 688.
  • The tree strengthens fortune, but the narrative explicitly rejects attributing every aspect of the sect’s prosperity to it. Its revelation also bolstered disciples’ confidence in facing cultivation barriers and danger 688.

Eight Gui Territory requiring restoration of damaged earth qi. The sect seeks Thunder Observatory assistance, and Lu Duxing later volunteers to oversee Cheng Xinzhan’s holdings there 546 613.
  • Three Pure Ones Mountain does not demand tribute from subordinate sects. Schools sharing its principle of mutual study are treated as fellow travelers rather than merely sources of offerings 92.
  • Disciples produce talismans, pills, artifacts, and spiritual plants during cultivation. Shi Yiniang proposes that the Xiao Household purchase their practice pieces in exchange for money or raw materials; Huo Jingyan agrees to consult the relevant offices and mountains 143.

After the alliance’s victory, Three Pure Ones Mountain hosts the division of captured treasures and arrangements for rotating watches on Dragon-Tiger Mountain 211 550 572.
  • Yellow Mountain Sword Sect — Receives substantial founding support from Three Pure Ones Mountain. Its sect master descends from Bao Erxuan, Ge Hong’s father-in-law 688.
