Background
Huang Fuling studied the Shadow Moon Convent’s Sacred Scripture from childhood and became its holy maiden. As Abbess Gong Yajun’s sole direct disciple, she received personal instruction in cultivation, acting, seductive arts, and bearing 109 168.
Six years before revealing her identity to Fang Yang, she infiltrated the Blood Rain Cult on Gong Yajun’s orders. Her mission was to discover the secret behind the Blood Rain Demon Venerable’s rapid rise and prepare for a future assassination attempt. The convent destroyed her records to conceal her background 109 169.
She and Yuan Heng posed as husband and wife during the operation, sharing a small courtyard but occupying separate rooms. Despite his persistent courtship, she never reciprocated his feelings. Her undercover assignment was approaching its planned recall when her pursuit of Fang Yang complicated the mission 37 47 109.
Appearance
- Features: Pale, jade-like skin, a voluptuous figure, and a foxlike oval face 51 157 160.
- Hair: Long, silky black hair that reaches below her hips when loose; she also wears it in two braids 51 104 168.
- Fragrance: A faint orchid scent repeatedly accompanies her 64 162 168.
- Changing presentation: Uses clothing and disguise to adopt sharply different appearances, including an innocent maiden, a princess consort, a female emperor, and a fox spirit 104 143 157 168.
Personality
Huang Fuling is openly appearance-driven. She rejects Yuan Heng because she finds him ugly, while Fang Yang’s handsome face and commanding presence become the focus of her infatuation. Her attraction is accompanied by fierce jealousy toward women she believes have secured his affection 37 41 47 96.
Bold, stubborn, and willing to violate taboos, she repeatedly approaches Fang Yang despite rejection, threats, and physical punishment. She sometimes injures herself to demonstrate submission or punish herself for trespassing. Her conduct leaves Fang Yang unsure whether she is sincerely devoted, testing him, or pursuing an assassination scheme 51 63 72 107 108.
Her devotion is nevertheless genuine: Fang Yang’s system eventually confirms an affection score of one hundred. Although she competes aggressively for his attention, she accepts that he may have many partners and says that even a small share of his favor would satisfy her 126 142.
Outside that attachment, she has a ruthless reputation. The narrative describes her as a notorious killer, while Fang Yang’s knowledge of her poison expertise contributes to his early distrust 51 168.
Abilities & Skills
Charm Art
Huang Fuling is an accomplished practitioner of seductive arts, trained by Gong Yajun. She considers her mastery far superior to that of ordinary practitioners 93 103 168.
- Reads signs of attraction and uses them to adjust her approach to Fang Yang 105 124.
- Combines charm techniques with acting, costumes, and carefully chosen behavior 55 143.
- Backlash: When genuine love takes root, the Charm Art can rebound on its practitioner. Huang Fuling experiences this as an overwhelming loss of restraint around Fang Yang 51.
- Her Buddhist appearance conceals cultivation associated with the Joyful Bodhisattva 279.
Disguise Technique
Her advanced Disguise Technique alters appearance and bearing, including the charm appropriate to the assumed persona. Fang Yang obtains a system skill card based on this ability 143.
- Portrays respectable maidens, seductive princess consorts, and domineering female emperors 143.
- Adopts a convincing innocent appearance before revealing her usual seductive manner at Mirror Lake 168.
- Her disguises are not necessarily sufficient to fool Gong Yajun, who personally trained her and knows her behavior intimately 168.
Poison Expertise
Huang Fuling is reputed to be exceptionally skilled with poison, with countless men said to have died at her hands 51.
- Rumors claim poison has permeated her entire body, making close contact dangerous; this is presented as rumor rather than a demonstrated ability 51.
- Her reputation makes Fang Yang regard intimacy with her as a potential threat 51.
Shadow Moon Sacred Body
Her special physique is one of the two secrets later recognized by Fang Yang’s system 185.
- A purple crescent mark appears between her brows during an episode of severe pain and weakness 124.
- She tells Protector Wang that Fang Yang has already broken the physique, but later passages establish that it remained intact at that time 109 168.
- Gong Yajun subsequently recognizes that Fang Yang has broken it after Huang Fuling’s encounter with him at Mirror Lake 170.
Massage and Sutra Techniques
Huang Fuling develops massage methods specifically to please Fang Yang and relieve his fatigue 72 124 157.
- Offers these skills as her reason for accompanying him on campaign 156 157.
- Recites the Water Dragon Sutra beside Mirror Lake 170.
- Takes turns with Gong Yajun chanting sutras to dispel Fang Yang’s killing intent; their night-long effort restores clarity to his eyes but exhausts both women 172.
Equipment & Items
- Protective jade pendant — Given by the convent mistress before her infiltration; crushing it was intended to keep her safe in danger. Huang Fuling claims Fang Yang’s aura prevented her from using it 109.
- Seduction materials — Obtains a jade slip from Spring Passion Hall and studies additional techniques associated with Spring Renewal Hall 46 49.
- Costumes and stockings — Secures Protector Wang’s agreement to provide garments suited to Fang Yang’s tastes under the pretext of supporting her mission 55.
- Imperial outfit — Specially tailored dragon robes, a crown, and fishnet stockings used for her female-emperor persona 104.
- Red leather whip and coarse hemp rope — Collected after the Heavenly Yin Sect invasion and subsequently incorporated into her attempts to attract Fang Yang 96 105.
- Fox-spirit outfit — Designs an outfit inspired by Fang Yang’s story of Yingning and wears it aboard the Black Jade Flying Carriage 157 158.
- Red cords and bells — Wears these beneath her modest disguise during her Mirror Lake confession 168.
Relationships
- Fang Yang — Initially her infiltration target, later her lover and the object of her unconditional devotion. His distrust gradually gives way to affection after the system verifies her feelings and she confesses her identity 51 142 169 173.
- Gong Yajun — Her master and the abbess who ordered her infiltration. Their teacher–disciple bond becomes a romantic rivalry when Huang Fuling discovers Gong Yajun also seeks Fang Yang’s favor 168 171 172.
- Yuan Heng — Fellow undercover operative and husband in name only. He repeatedly interprets her rejection and willing pursuit of Fang Yang as jealousy, coercion, or self-sacrifice on his behalf 47 48 53 93 157.
- Han Lingxuan, Princess Consort of the Southern Pacifying King — An early rival whom Huang Fuling vows to replace. The two trade provocations and compete over Fang Yang’s attention 47 67 71 108.
- Ye Qinghong — Another rival for Fang Yang’s affection. Their competition becomes especially direct aboard the flying carriage during the journey to Shadow Moon Convent 96 158 160 163.
- Protector Wang — Her convent contact, who authorizes the honey trap and later conveys orders to abandon it. Huang Fuling exploits Wang’s belief that she remains a devoted agent making reluctant sacrifices 54 55 109 110.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rebellion and Pursuit of the Demon Venerable
After Zhang Sheng’s rebellion, Fang Yang punishes Huang Fuling for standing aside rather than defending him. Even while he strips her cultivation, she responds flirtatiously. His subsequent display of power intensifies her attraction, and she openly rejects Yuan Heng’s attempts to claim her affection 38 41.
Believing that the Princess Consort is already intimate with Fang Yang, Huang Fuling dresses to seduce him and enters his bedchamber. Fang Yang initially mistakes her for the Princess Consort. Discovering the mistake deeply wounds her, but strengthens her determination to win him over. Her Charm Art backlash then drives her to tackle him, and he forcibly expels her 47 49 50 51.
Fang Yang secretly leaves a trace of Profound Heaven Strategy aura on her to identify her contacts. Meanwhile, Protector Wang proposes a beauty trap to uncover his secrets, unwittingly giving Huang Fuling an official excuse to continue her personal pursuit 52 54 55.
Rivalry and Growing Attachment
Huang Fuling repeatedly challenges the Princess Consort and seeks private time with Fang Yang at the hot spring. Although he remains suspicious, her plea for companionship briefly softens his attitude 64 67.
After witnessing the Heavenly Yin Sect invasion and Ye Qinghong’s concern for Fang Yang, she identifies another rival. She adopts increasingly elaborate personas, including the female emperor, while concealing her enthusiasm from her convent handlers by claiming she has been forced into submission 93 96 104 105 109 110.
When she suffers severe pain, Fang Yang treats her with the Immortal Finger and brings her food. Later, the system confirms her maximum affection and rewards him with treasure chests. It also identifies two undiscovered secrets associated with her 124 125 126 142 143.
Campaign to Shadow Moon Convent
Huang Fuling volunteers to accompany Fang Yang’s expedition to her own convent. By this point, he regards her as his most loyal companion because her affection has reached its maximum 157.
During the journey, she and Ye Qinghong openly compete for his attention. Ye Qinghong’s attempts to monitor them fail to prevent further private encounters, and Huang Fuling answers subsequent questions evasively 158 160 161 163.
Mirror Lake Confession
At Mirror Lake, Huang Fuling decides to give herself completely to Fang Yang rather than continue trying to involve her master in his affairs. She also intends to reveal her true identity, knowing Gong Yajun would be furious if she discovered the deception 168 169.
After their intimacy, a strand of Huang Fuling’s spirit enters Fang Yang’s Profound Heaven Strategy. This allows him to distinguish her lies from the truth and gives him the power to destroy her soul. She confesses that she is Shadow Moon Convent’s saintess and has spent six years investigating him, then submits herself for punishment 169.
When Gong Yajun arrives, Huang Fuling initially shields Fang Yang from her. Discovering that her master also desires him transforms her alarm into jealousy. The two compete to take punishment in the other’s place before Fang Yang orders both to help dispel his killing intent 171 172.
Fang Yang afterward shows Huang Fuling rare tenderness. Uncovering her physique and undercover identity also completes the system’s two secrets, producing rewards that include the Temptation Box and Bewitching Eye 173 185.
Later Appearances
- Returns from an assignment guarding the mountain’s foot when she notices something amiss, joining Gong Yajun 278.
- Remains respectful toward Fang Yang but refuses to yield to Gong Yajun in their continuing competition for his attention 279.
