Background / History

Life as a Servant Disciple

Ning Hao was a poorly regarded servant who knew how to work but struggled with words, making him an easy target for bullying. Chen Yang exploited his willingness to perform dirty, exhausting jobs. After Chen Yang deducted money from his allowance and Ning Hao sent some home to his family, he had almost nothing left to purchase cultivation resources 15.

Feng Qiufeng, his childhood friend from the same hometown, had brought him to the Azure Cloud Lineage. Their long-standing connection made Ning Hao feel obliged to answer Feng's summons even when it interrupted a cultivation breakthrough 19 20.

Saving Lin Shisan

Ning Hao interrupted Chen Yang's potentially fatal attack on Lin Shisan by claiming that Immortal Lord Zhao urgently wanted to see him. He invented a waiting sword-bearing attendant to make the summons credible. Chen Yang let Lin Shisan leave and instructed Ning Hao to accompany him 14 15.

Once they were alone, Ning Hao admitted the deception and condemned Chen Yang's willingness to kill a fellow servant. He spent nearly an hour channeling true qi into Lin Shisan until his injuries stabilized. Lin Shisan offered him the remaining fifth of a bottle of Body Tempering Liquid; after repeatedly refusing payment for his help, Ning Hao accepted it and declared him a friend 15.

He later supported Lin Shisan after finding him badly injured from his secret lightning experiments. Ning Hao helped him reach work and complete his tasks, delaying his own planned breakthrough out of concern for him 19.

Interrogation and Death

Feng Qiufeng and Chen Yang interrupted Ning Hao's breakthrough preparations, assaulted him, and questioned him about Niu Shan's Storage Ring and the Body Tempering Liquid. Ning Hao denied possessing the ring and claimed to have bought the liquid, refusing to identify Lin Shisan as its source. After exposing his fabricated summons, Chen Yang demanded that he choose between his boss and his friend 20.

According to Feng Qiufeng's later account, Body Tempering Liquid was reported missing the day after Lin Shisan left for Jade Maiden Peak. The liquid in Ning Hao's room became evidence against him. He insisted that he had not stolen it but still refused to name Lin Shisan. His cultivation was crippled, he was expelled, and he reportedly died in a demon-beast attack near the mountain's foot 32.

Feng Qiufeng subsequently thought that Chen Yang had very likely arranged the supposed beast attack, recognizing it as consistent with methods Chen Yang had used before 34.

Appearance

Personality

Ning Hao was hardworking, socially awkward, and uncomfortable receiving thanks. He often stammered under pressure, but his timidity did not prevent him from risking retaliation to save Lin Shisan. Although he could endure stolen allowances and exhausting labor, he drew a firm line at Chen Yang killing people 14 15.

His loyalty was practical as well as emotional: he treated Lin Shisan's injuries, helped with his workload, and postponed his own advancement for him. His refusal to reveal the source of the Body Tempering Liquid continued even when he faced punishment 15 19 32.

Abilities & Skills

True Qi Control

• Could channel his own limited true qi into another person to stabilize injuries; treating Lin Shisan required nearly an hour 15.
• Used qi circulation to prepare for a Body Tempering breakthrough 20.

Improvised Deception

• Exploited Chen Yang's fear of higher-ranking cultivators with a fabricated urgent summons 14 15.

• Body Tempering Liquid — Lin Shisan's gift, intended to support his breakthrough. The remaining portion was worth seven or eight Spirit Stones, equivalent to three or four months of Ning Hao's allowance 15.
• Storage limitations — Had no Storage Ring; leaving the liquid on his table allowed Chen Yang to spot it immediately 20.

Relationships

• Lin Shisan — Close friend whom Ning Hao rescued and protected. Lin Shisan regarded him as someone worth growing close to; Feng Qiufeng later called Lin his best and only friend 15 19 32.
• Chen Yang — Exploitative superior whose authority Ning Hao defied to prevent a killing. Chen Yang later threatened him and was suspected of engineering his death 15 20 34.
• Feng Qiufeng — Childhood friend and fellow townsman who helped him enter the sect, then assaulted and interrogated him on Chen Yang's behalf 19 20.

Story Role

• Ning Hao's reported clearing of Lin Shisan's former courtyard makes him a potential lead in the search for Lin's father's memorial tablet and the Little Black Cauldron. His death prevents Lin from questioning him 32.
• Feng Qiufeng and Chen Yang use his death to accuse Lin Shisan of theft and of causing his friend's demise 32 33.
