Background / History
Life at the Pavilion
Feng Qingye grew up in the Tai Chi Hall and considers the sect his home. Despite his youthful appearance, he is already sixty-five when Lin Shisan meets him 44 50.
When Lin Shisan reports to Deer Gate Peak, Feng asks about his connection to Han Yansong, accepts his gifts, and assigns him a small courtyard. He then places Lin Shisan in charge of cleaning the gatehouse, rooms, courtyard, and grounds, including daily trimming of the bamboo and grass along the path 42 43.
Feng explains that the pavilion’s paid mystery-box searches make its workers targets for disappointed visitors. He also returns Lin Shisan’s father’s memorial tablet, which Han Yansong has recovered, and gives Lin Shisan until the next morning to decide whether to remain 43 44 45.
Protecting Lin Shisan
As Lin Shisan prepares to leave, an outer sect disciple threatens Feng over a Spirit Token that cost a thousand Spirit Stones and yielded nothing. When the visitor turns on Lin Shisan, Feng pleads that the boy is merely passing through and asks the man to take his anger out on him instead. Both survive the assault. After Lin Shisan chooses to stay, Feng stops demanding tribute because Lin has saved his life 46.
Bai Wuqi later arrives using Lei Shi’s Spirit Token. As Bai grows furious at his inability to catch a mystery box, Feng sends Lin Shisan down the mountain to buy food and liquor. Lin returns to a wrecked pavilion and finds Feng buried beneath broken timber, gravely wounded. He subsequently realizes that the errand gave him a chance to escape Bai’s violence 48 49.
Injuries and Retaliation Fears
Lin Shisan bandages Feng, takes over the pavilion’s work, and assists him while he cannot move. Feng admits that full recovery requires either expensive medicine or powerful assistance, neither of which he can obtain 49.
After learning of the injuries, Lei Shi leaves to punish Bai Wuqi with confinement on the Back Mountain. Feng fears that punishment will provoke covert retaliation against them. He urges Lin Shisan to flee immediately and offers his savings and cultivation supplies, but Lin refuses to abandon him. Their exchange is interrupted by a Demon Beast lunging at Lin Shisan; Feng’s face turns ashen, and he rolls beneath the bed 50.
Appearance
- Youthful exterior: Initially appears to be a boy close to Lin Shisan’s age, despite being sixty-five 42 44.
- Eyes: Described as large and dark; his smiles can narrow them into slits 43 44.
- After Bai Wuqi’s assault: Has a bruised, swollen face, numerous bleeding sword wounds across his chest, and torn clothing. Lin Shisan’s bandaging leaves only his eyes and mouth exposed 48 49.
Personality
Feng is greedy, easily pleased by flattery, and fond of good food and liquor. Lin Shisan’s gifts of pork trotters, braised beef, and wine noticeably soften his treatment of the boy. He delegates even small chores and continues demanding food and drink while severely injured 44 45 49.
He enjoys displaying his knowledge and teasing Lin Shisan. He lectures at length about the pavilion, scolds questions he considers foolish, and briefly frightens Lin with a joke about the limited protection afforded to servant disciples 43 44 47.
His self-interest does not prevent genuine loyalty. He pleads for Lin Shisan’s life, sends him away before Bai Wuqi’s assault, and later offers his meager savings to help him escape. His warnings about retaliation reflect his belief that powerful cultivators can arrange seemingly accidental deaths without acting openly 46 48 49 50.
Abilities & Skills
Pavilion Access Control
- Uses a palm-sized Little Yellow Flag and an incantation to open a starlit path into the pavilion’s mystery-box search area 48.
- The activation reveals a darkened sky filled with moving, unmarked boxes that visitors must catch 48.
- Operating the entrance does not grant him unrestricted access: he explicitly says that he cannot enter the pavilion freely himself 43.
Knowledge of the Mystery-Box System
- Identifies the pavilion as a Spirit Artifact belonging to the Tai Chi Hall’s Founding Patriarch and explains that visitors search only its outer region 44.
- Estimates the chance of obtaining a cultivation manual or combat skill at roughly one in a thousand, with the chance of finding a suitable one below one in ten thousand. These are his own rough calculations 44.
- Explains admission costs, annual free visits for outer sect disciples, and why visitors blame pavilion workers rather than the powerful backers of the Spirit Token trade 43 44.
- Directs Lin Shisan to monitor the Message Stone for incoming visitors while he is bedridden 49.
Cultivation Recovery Knowledge
- Names an Origin Returning Pill as a possible treatment: at least 100,000 Spirit Stones, or 200,000 for one with two or three markings 49.
- Says a Yellow Dragon Realm cultivator could nourish his dantian with a Dao Seed and restore him in fewer than three days. Neither remedy is obtained in the provided chapters 49 50.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Little Yellow Flag — Instrument used to activate the pavilion entrance and mystery-box search area 48.
- Personal savings and supplies — A small bag of Lower-Grade Spirit Stones, a Low-Tier Cultivation Manual scroll, several nearly dried medicinal herbs, two bottles of Body Tempering Liquid, and four dull-colored Body Tempering Pills. He offers these to Lin Shisan, who refuses them 50.
Relationships
- Lin Shisan — Subordinate whose diligence and gifts initially earn his favor. Their relationship becomes reciprocal: Feng protects Lin from dangerous visitors, while Lin nurses him and refuses to leave him behind 42 45 46 49 50.
- Han Yansong — Acquaintance whom Feng calls an “old drunk.” Han connects Lin Shisan to the pavilion and delivers the recovered memorial tablet through Feng 42 45.
- Lei Shi — Uncle-Master whom Feng describes as even-tempered and familiar to him. Lei condemns Bai Wuqi’s attack and leaves to impose punishment, alarming Feng rather than reassuring him 47 50.
- Bai Wuqi — Uncle-Master Feng knows and fears. Bai severely injures him during his pavilion visit; Feng later fears he will arrange covert retaliation after Lei Shi intervenes 48 49 50.
