Black Tortoise’s Remnant

Black Tortoise died while attempting to become a new world, leaving behind an ego corpse, good corpse, and evil corpse. Stone Mama embodies the ego, retaining relatively complete memories and inherited knowledge. The good corpse preserved Black Tortoise’s beliefs and protected its descendants; the evil corpse embodied animal desires and threatened even its own offspring 94 98.

Before Zhang Ming recognized its identity, the turtles had enshrined the stone on their altar. Its knowledge of the Flame-Horned People and Spirit Language led him to suspect that it was Black Tortoise or one of its remnants 88.

Life with Zhang Ming

Zhang Ming named the stone Stone Mama and offered stories in exchange for explanations of an ancient tablet. Stone Mama answered with Spirit Language, showing him a vision of a Flamehorn elder teaching students about spirit 64.

When the island’s central monsters blocked Zhang Ming’s plans, Stone Mama proposed reenacting Black Tortoise’s failed Heavenly God breakthrough to provoke Heavenly Punishment. Its eventual deception relied on borrowed power and the might of heaven and earth, not personal combat strength 89 94 98.

Stone Mama subsequently accompanied Zhang Ming beyond Turtle Island. It explained World Hunters, identified the blood moon as a demon god, and helped him interpret unfamiliar civilizations and supernatural phenomena 113 131 146.

Blue Crystal World and Monkey Pavilion Valley

During the exploration of the Blue Crystal world, Stone Mama hauled Zhang Ming’s backpack through sewage pipes and scouted the tower’s upper level with a phone. After the clash involving the Space-Time Worm, it retrieved the Worm’s red Reality Coordinate from the seabed 165 178.

In the monkeys’ world, Stone Mama served as an interpreter and gained the deference of Maomao, the monkey king, and the elders. It also helped Zhang Ming withstand the Space-Time Worm’s influence and advised him before his dangerous fusion with a heart fragment 196 202 207 210.

Work with Humanity

Stone Mama welcomed the opportunity to represent Zhang Ming’s group at a civilization exchange. Being needed reminded it of the days when Black Tortoise carried the Flame-Horned People across the Demon God’s Sea 334.

On Earth, human researchers recognized it as an authority on the Black Tortoise Breathing Technique. It negotiated access to that knowledge in exchange for large-scale production of Little White’s turtle eggs, initially demanding one hundred million before lowering the demand to ten million 391.

As a dean of the Great Academy of Sciences, Stone Mama delivered an opening address through a Spirit Language vision of a lifelong Dao Seeker. Its later assistance improved the Human Breathing Technique’s efficiency by 40%; further improvement was limited by humanity’s lack of turtle shells and Black Tortoise bloodlines 396 403.

Return to Turtle Island

At Turtle Island, Stone Mama encountered the Dragon Turtle: Black Tortoise’s former evil corpse, which had devoured the good corpse and occupied a Bixi descendant’s body. Suspecting that it intended to consume the descendants’ bloodlines, Stone Mama attacked it 449.

After the exhausting confrontation, Stone Mama explained that neither remnant could strengthen itself by devouring the other anymore. Both had developed self-awareness and become separate individuals living second lives 450.

Their rivalry later allowed cooperation. Stone Mama exchanged a Black Tortoise Bloodline petal for one hundred thousand tonnes of The Starry Night Shells and a favor. During the Dragon Turtle’s subsequent battle with Lu Wu, it recognized its rival’s exhaustion and urged Zhang Ming to intervene 468 483.

Burial Realm and Later Events

After suffering severe injuries, Stone Mama helped protect Zhang Ming while he remained unconscious. In Bluestone Village, it distributed Zhang Ming’s spare weapons and rifles to the villagers, treating the assistance partly as payment for sheltering him 491 497.

Among the Burial Realm’s ancient monsters, Stone Mama fabricated an explanation of how to escape Demon God contracts by preserving a remnant soul. Although it drew on Black Tortoise’s genuine attempt to become a world, the proposed contract-escape method was improvised, not established knowledge 524.

Before the Demon God War, Stone Mama helped arrange Zhong Shan and Blue’s meeting with [Hope]. It later agreed to a family connection between Little White and the Mountain-Bearing Divine Turtle 560 561.

In the extra story, Stone Mama reunited with the Dragon Turtle while Zhang Ming helped the Flamehorn Civilization find a homeland. The two no longer held a genuine grudge, though their dispute over who deserved the name Black Tortoise remained unresolved 579.

Stone Mama’s natural body is a fist-sized black stone that cannot grow or shrink 72 396.

Personality

Stone Mama is nosy, shameless, theatrical, and especially fond of embarrassing stories. It repeatedly bargains for gossip about Zhang Ming’s first girlfriend and becomes distraught when it realizes that it does not even know her name. Fiction is acceptable entertainment too: when Zhang Ming admits that a story is invented, Stone Mama demands that he keep inventing it 70 161 248.

It prefers repetition to original composition and often avoids thinking through problems. Philosophical questions about memory and identity leave it spinning in confusion. Its knowledge is extensive, but Zhang Ming repeatedly finds its reasoning and proposed solutions exasperating 89 104.

Praise and recognition are powerful incentives. Stone Mama painstakingly rehearses an impressive entrance, enjoys being addressed as “Teacher Stone,” and monitors online comments from inside its artificial giant body 390 391 396.

Beneath the vanity lies a persistent desire to restore Black Tortoise’s glory, carry a civilization, and see Little White become a Black Tortoise. It can also act courageously when needed: it joins a dangerous battle despite being outmatched, and Bluestone Village’s elders judge it foul-mouthed but conscientious and dependable 342 486 497 552.
