Power Progression

Demon Gods do not cultivate step by step like humans. Their development concerns the completion of their individual rules; the examples below are not a shared cultivation ladder 146 546.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Rule accumulation — Ten Thousand Eyes 276 546 Grew another eye whenever it exterminated a species. Covering its entire body with eyes would have allowed it to become Ultimate, but it was killed before reaching that state.
Increasing rule completeness — Hope 525 550 Representatives interpreted its apparent ability to lie as evidence of more complete rules. Zhang Ming later discovered that its rules were vastly more complex than those of Unfulfilled Wish.
Ultimate Demon God — Hope 569 Became the first Ultimate Demon God in tens of thousands of years. Its Jupiter-sized gourd expanded to the size of the sun and dissolved as it wrote part of its rules into the world’s foundations.

Nature and Origin

Demon Gods originate from concepts, including life, death, hope, the sun, the moon, reproduction, and freedom. Because there is only one Mythological Origin, an occupied concept almost never produces another identical Demon God. Particularly broad concepts can nevertheless give rise to several distinct beings 541 550.

Their bodies and abilities are expressions of their rules. Studying the Space-Time Worm leads Zhang Ming to conclude that it is not truly a life-form, but something derived from a Unique Rule 207.

The Mythological Origin

  • Source of their strength: Ancient accounts associate proximity to the Mythological Center with greater power 509 510.
  • Reason for their flight: Burial’s theory holds that the Mythological Center may be alive and hunting Demon Gods. Becoming Ultimate would remove the weaknesses that expose them to this hunter 510.
  • Later explanation: Karl describes the Mythological Origin as existing between life and death and seeking to complete its rules by preying on Demon Gods 526.
  • Limits of knowledge: The region cannot be directly investigated safely. Karl warns that truly understanding the purely idealist Origin would mean becoming part of it 526.

Intelligence and Ego

Most Demon Gods lack humanlike intelligence. Their behavior follows rules that can contain exploitable loopholes, although they can calculate, learn, and assess benefits and risks 525 546.

Intelligence is not the same as ego-awareness. Unfulfilled Wish can sustain elaborate schemes with machine-like rationality, while ordinary Demon God thinking does not understand loneliness or the human sense of self. Hope’s emerging ego allows it to value companionship over its original drive to become Ultimate 525 551 554 556.

Classification

Category Meaning
Lesser Demon God The weakest category identified by the Ancient Oath Civilization 446.
Greater Demon God The strongest category in the same account; its exact relationship to Ultimate is not explained there 446.
Ultimate Demon God The final evolutionary form. Its rules can extend indefinitely and become natural laws 525.
  • The Flame-Horned People initially use “Demon God” as a broad designation for overwhelmingly powerful beings, without a reliable internal ranking 146.
  • Ultimate status does not confer literal omniscience or omnipotence: even Hope cannot calculate every consequence of its influence 569.

Abilities and Powers

Unique and Absolute Rules

A Demon God represents the pinnacle of a particular domain. Within that specialty, even Immortals and Eternals cannot directly match its rules 516 563.

  • Conditional supremacy: Gangduo describes a Demon God as unsurpassed within the scope of its absolute attack rule. Such a rule can kill another Demon God if its conditions are triggered 235.
  • Historical influence: Their abilities can redirect evolution and alter the history of entire worlds 235.
  • Rule division: Learning a fragment can qualitatively change an ordinary being’s soul and help it surpass the Spirit Limit, but division weakens the original rule’s expression 179.
  • Continuing unity: Divided Demon God rules remain parts of a single whole; cutting them apart does not necessarily create independent Demon Gods 549.
  • Revised understanding: After nearly becoming the Space-Time Worm, Zhang Ming concludes that the earlier distinction between “strong” and “weak” rules inadequately describes Demon God power 207.

Anchoring and Mental Influence

Anchoring allows Demon Gods to extend their influence through other beings and places 519 522.

  • Possession and corruption: Their rules can occupy a soul and produce a partial revival, potentially causing an ecological catastrophe 502.
  • Subtle influence: A Demon God’s power can alter a mind even without a detectable anchor 540.
  • Name recognition: Merely spreading a Demon God’s name creates a very weak form of anchoring 532.
  • Psychological openings: Dusk exploits the Great Willow Tree’s conflicting emotions, attachments, and vanity to undermine its seal 517.
  • Avatars: Demon Gods can project power into anchored bodies. The avatars encountered during the Burial Realm war possess at most one percent of their true bodies’ power 558 563.

Space-Time and World Crossing

Demon Gods exist above World Domains and possess abilities involving space and time 235.

  • Forced crossing: Some can cross through their own space-time abilities, but doing so can severely exhaust them. Zhang Ming attributes the Space-Time Worm’s weakened condition partly to such a crossing 282.
  • Special nodes: Rare space-time nodes provide another route and can form forbidden regions such as the Abyss 282.
  • Boundary restrictions: A World Domain can sharply limit projected power. Repairing the Abyss seal progressively blocks Unfulfilled Wish’s influence 290.
  • Tunnels: During the Burial Realm crisis, Demon Gods gather around newly excavated tunnels as routes into the Demon God’s Sea 558 561 563.

Energy, Recovery, and Combat

Demon Gods obtain space-time tidal energy by influencing history. Destroying civilizations is one method, not their only possible means of survival 526 546.

  • Source of the World: Fuels combat and repairs injuries. A well-funded Demon God can sustain almost inexhaustible power and vitality unless erased in an instant 565.
  • Predation: Hunting another Demon God yields more than destroying ten thousand civilizations, making alliances vulnerable to betrayal 540.
  • Adaptive recovery: The Space-Time Worm’s brain rules include repair, evolution, and the development of new rules to counter enemies 209.
  • Physical vulnerability: Purely physical attacks can bypass idealist-rule defenses, forcing the target to endure the damage with its body 564.

The Way of the Demon God

The Way of the Demon God is one of the old path’s two routes, alongside the Way of the Heavenly God. It relies on opportunities that cannot be reproduced through a standard teaching system 502.

Aspect Details
Method Taking control of Demon God rules rather than merely being controlled by them 513.
Supporting talent According to Tong Gu, a devouring ability is required. Possible sources include Pixiu or Taotie bloodlines, natural abilities, and Divine Man inheritances 502.
Teaching limitation Unique rules cannot simply be shared between practitioners: one person’s possession excludes another’s use of the same rule 502.
Principal danger The rules gradually occupy the practitioner’s soul, potentially reviving a Demon God through them 502.
Historical outcomes Recorded attempts include failures, mistaken identification of Anchoring Ones, and backlashes that caused disasters 513.

A Demon God Anchoring One is controlled by a Demon God; a practitioner of the Way of the Demon God controls Demon God rules. The distinction is fundamental, despite their sometimes similar outward appearance 513.

Known Demon Gods

Demon God Rules, traits, and significance
Space-Time Worm / Red Moon Associated with freedom and exceptionally useful space-time abilities. The Blue Crystal People’s Pillar of Heaven killed it while it was still unhatched; Zhang Ming later appropriated its rules and operated its true body 146 205 550 564.
Ten Thousand Eyes Possessed eyes capable of freezing space-time and gained an eye by exterminating a species. Liu Mang killed it through a scheme involving Unfulfilled Wish 230 276 281.
Unfulfilled Wish / Hope Two sides of the same Demon God, associated with wishes and the Judgment Balance. Hope developed ego-awareness and ultimately became Ultimate 541 551 569.
Burial Keeps civilizations captive for a stable supply of space-time tidal energy. Its territorial interests also lead it to suppress rival Demon Gods 519 522.
Mo Enforces contracts through absolute attack rules. Its paper contracts function even in the Demon God’s Sea 526 540 546.
Dusk A mental-type Demon God that exploits emotional weaknesses. Bofu’s sacrifice enabled its sealing; Hope later removed it from the Great Willow Tree 517 518 570.
Slaughter Hunts the strong and lends power to capable hunters. Its Evil Weapons absorb victims’ life force to restore and strengthen their wielders 540 545.
Reincarnation Seeks to establish the Six Paths of Reincarnation and repeatedly reincarnate lives under its control. Initially regarded as an exceptionally dangerous, near-Ultimate threat 558.
Mi / Maitreya Uses assimilation as a combined offensive and defensive rule. Its Buddha-shaped avatar devours other avatars during the Burial Realm war 561 562.
Mighty Sky Seeks to assimilate the whole world into itself; fights Qilin and Zhang Ming during the Burial Realm crisis 564 569.
Mirror Imitates the Space-Time Worm’s tunneling abilities. Fragments shed by its damaged avatar retain imitation powers 563 565.
Realm Attempts to create a tunnel suitable for a Demon God’s passage, but cannot widen it sufficiently through its own power 563.
Turbidity Completes its rules by contaminating life. Hope proposes redirecting this power toward bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells 569.
Sea of Illusions A freedom-associated Demon God with powerful teeth and a preference for eating other Demon Gods’ flesh 550.
Laplace A freedom-associated Demon God that seeks to perceive everything and records unusual histories, antagonizing other beings through its spying 550.
Sky-Mending Stone Wa’s intelligent Demon God companion. Gu Shunjing identifies it as the force that changed the world’s rules; Karl credits Wa’s companion with directly bringing about the Demon God’s Sea 446 546.

Relations with Civilizations

Destruction and Resistance

  • Humanity’s early response: Researchers named these potentially world-destroying beings “Demon Gods” and renamed the Mysterious Zone the Demon God’s Sea. Exploration was largely prohibited to avoid attracting their attention 96.
  • Mutual restraint: Demon Gods compete and prey upon one another. Their opposition is itself an important stabilizing force 490 525.
  • Sealing: Exploiting rule loopholes can allow a Demon God to be sealed even when outright destruction is impossible. Humanlike intelligence makes those loopholes harder to expose 518 525.
  • Civilization-scale precautions: Proposed responses include isolated Small Worlds, migration to more materialist worlds, and direct military resistance 525.
  • Military limits: Zhang Ming judges that humanity cannot defeat an awakened Demon God without an Ultimate Weapon 404.

Cooperation and Trade

Cooperation depends on shared interests, not loyalty. Burial protects its captive territory from rivals, Slaughter empowers hunters, and Mo supplies enforceable contracts 519 540.

  • Negotiation: The Judgment Balance allows the Wish Demon God to communicate with other Demon Gods through an abstract process compared to machine language 523.
  • Rule-made goods: Hope offers lifespan fruits, body-rebuilding fruit, and high-level contracts produced through Demon God powers 541.
  • Civilizational acceptance: Advanced civilizations agree to test commercial cooperation, while remaining concerned about traps and the partner’s method of reaching Ultimate 546.
  • Incompatible goals: Ten Thousand Eyes’ dependence on species extermination makes sustained cooperation impossible 546.
  • Hope’s alternative: Hope proposes guiding or rewriting destructive applications into beneficial ones, while placing uncooperative Demon Gods into prolonged sleep 569.

Major Historical Events

Ancient Migrations and Seals

Ancient Divine Men disagreed over whether Demon Gods could be partners against a common threat. Members of Burial’s school advocated cooperation, citing Liu Mang’s killing of Ten Thousand Eyes; opponents argued that such bargains merely exchanged one danger for another. The dispute over leaving the Burial Realm culminated in a disciple sacrificing himself through a contract with Mo 510.

Bofu’s battle with Dusk ended in his death and the Demon God’s sealing. His staff became the forest from which the Great Willow Tree originated, establishing a defense that survived across successive lives 517 518.

The Red Moon’s Fall

The Blue Crystal Civilization devoted a thousand-year project to hunting the unhatched Space-Time Worm. Gu preserved a final opportunity after the original hunt failed on the verge of success and entrusted it to Zhang Ming. The Worm’s eventual death produced catastrophic phenomena and led distant civilizations to believe that a peak civilization had emerged 159 174 180.

The Burial Realm War

A Demon God attack shattered the Burial Realm’s balance, killing half its population within minutes. Numerous Demon Gods subsequently targeted the emerging route into the Demon God’s Sea, sending avatars to compete, devour one another, and force passage through the tunnels 541 558 561 562.

Zhang Ming used the Space-Time Worm’s true body to defend the tunnel. Hope’s emergence as an Ultimate Demon God ultimately enabled a different resolution: the hostile powers withdrew, Dusk was separated from the Great Willow Tree, and the five-month crisis ended 564 569 570.
