Background / History

Original Li Xuan and Transmigration

The original Li Xuan was the Li family’s third son. His mother died giving birth to Li Xiuer, and his second brother disappeared several years before the story. His father, Li Shan, had supported the household as a respected hunter until a fall during a fox hunt left him with a damaged leg and a lasting ailment. The fox pelt had been intended to help Li Xuan court Xu Yulian 1.

Spoiled and unwilling to work, the original Li Xuan repeatedly took the family’s money to please Xu Yulian, answered advice with curses or violence, and ignored his younger sister’s hunger. After stealing the household’s remaining eggs, being chased away from the Xu family’s gate, and developing a high fever, he awakened with a different soul inside his body 1.

Becoming the Family’s Provider

The transmigrated Li Xuan discovered the Hunting Panel and entered the safer forest fringes with worn weapons and half a piece of flatbread. His first rabbit kill provided points, an agility trait, and the beginnings of Archery Mastery. Bringing the rabbit home—and behaving without his predecessor’s hostility—began to restore his family’s trust 1 2 3 4.

He subsequently hunted pheasants and a mountain goat, inherited Li Shan’s stronger bow, and planned how to divide his catches between food and saleable goods. He intended to use the goatskin to obtain winter clothing, while his family’s increasingly frequent meat meals changed the village’s opinion of him 8 12 14 16.

Breaking with the Xu Family

When Matchmaker Wang proposed a marriage requiring costly gifts and a change of surname, Li Xuan exaggerated Xu Yulian’s supposed worth and raised the demanded gifts to a hundred taels, gold, jade, and Suzhou fabric. He later explained that this was “praising to death”: inflating their expectations before exposing their greed publicly 5 6 11.

When Xu Wang insulted him as a “mud-legged peasant” and attempted to take his pheasant, he rejected the match. He then acted as though he had gone violently mad, frightening the visitors into fleeing. Afterward, he assured his family that both his apparent madness and his continued devotion to Xu Yulian had been acts 9 10 11.

Bandit Rescue and Martial Training

On the road to town, Li Xuan fought six armed bandits while protecting Li Zhong and Wang. He then investigated another attack and rescued Shen Qingyi, her younger brother, and their accompanying party. The encounter also revealed that killing humans could produce traits 22 23.

Shen Wanjun invited him to the Shen residence to thank him and provide an account to Head Constable Wang. Seeing the constable’s extraordinary attributes and martial skill convinced Li Xuan to seek formal training. Rather than accept the offered reward, he requested help finding a trustworthy teacher and received a recommendation to the Thunderbolt Martial Arts Hall 26 27.

The hall accepted him as an outer-courtyard disciple despite his inability to produce the thirty-tael apprenticeship fee. His poor martial aptitude made the basic fist routine difficult, and he was given six months to build a foundation and pass an assessment; otherwise, he would have to leave or pay to continue 30 31.

Wang Kui’s Gang and Its Aftermath

After killing a female wild boar, Li Xuan discovered that Wang Kui and two companions had stolen the meat he had hidden in the mountains. He tracked them, killed the two accomplices, and defeated Wang Kui with his woodcutting blade. Wang Kui’s death yielded a martial root-bone entry and an incomplete internal cultivation manual 37 39 41 42.

Li Xuan used wolves and the rain to conceal the remains and evidence. Li Shan approved of his actions but ordered him and Li Zhong to keep the killings secret. Li Xuan also concealed the Hunting Panel and traits when describing the confrontation to his father 43.

After reaching Oxhide, Li Xuan unsuccessfully attempted the incomplete Breath-Subduing Formula. At the martial hall, he clashed with Du Mingxuan over a training spot and discovered medicinal soup as another source of points. Later, he ambushed two men following him, took their valuables and clothing, and returned home to learn that Wang Kui’s associates and Constable Zhou Hong had accused the village of the killings. The following morning, three veteran hunters approached him about hunting together 45 47 48 49 50.

Appearance

  • Initially frail: The body he inherited was weak enough that climbing a mountain trail left him breathless and drawing a battered bow required considerable effort 1 2.
  • Increasingly sturdy: After his early Physique improvements, Li Shan notices that his shoulder has become much sturdier 12.
  • Hunting attire: Wears thin, worn padded clothing in the mountains and carries a bow, quiver, and woodcutting blade 14 35.

Personality

Li Xuan’s priorities sharply contrast with his predecessor’s. He commits himself to feeding the household, helping his father recover, buying Xiuer clothing, and relieving Li Zhong and Wang’s constant anxiety over food. He also shares goat soup with Xing’er to take home and warns villagers against hunting alone or venturing too deeply into the mountains 7 18 35.

He is pragmatic about both survival and advancement. He initially hunts only near the forest’s safer fringes, prioritizes archery because it supplies his livelihood and points, and evaluates traits for practical usefulness rather than rarity alone. He avoids unnecessary confrontation when other hunting grounds are available 1 23 34 36.

His protectiveness is paired with calculated ruthlessness. He uses exaggerated praise and convincing performances to defeat the Xu family’s pressure, acts decisively when bandits threaten his relatives, and refuses Wang Kui’s pleas for mercy. He also takes care to conceal dangerous evidence and keeps his supernatural advantages secret 6 9 10 22 23 42 43.

Abilities & Skills

Hunting Panel

An interface visible only to Li Xuan that displays attributes, skills, equipment, points, traits, and beast-pet information 1 18 34.

  • Attribute inspection: Reads the Physique and Dexterity of people and animals. Moving attribute labels help him follow a squirrel while it remains within range 1 26 36.
  • Point investment: Improves physical attributes and recognized skills directly. Once an attribute exceeds 1.0, each further 0.1 increase costs five points 2.
  • Point sources: Gains points from successful hunts, eating game, and medicinal broth 2 4 18 37 47.
  • Equipment bonuses: Receives direct attribute increases from weapons and ammunition 1 14 34.
  • Trait management: Can freely switch equipped traits or convert excess traits into points. His initial equipped-trait limit is five, with further expansion available through point expenditure 23.
  • Absorption limit: Drinking additional medicinal soup eventually yields diminishing returns because his body cannot absorb unlimited amounts in one day 48.

Archery

His principal hunting skill advances to Expert mastery, supplying both accuracy and techniques useful beyond conventional bow shooting 5 34.

  • Proficient accuracy: Can fully draw and steadily control his early bow; estimates seven or eight hits out of ten against stationary targets within thirty paces under suitable conditions 5.
  • Consecutive Arrows: Fires three arrows in rapid succession, demonstrated with impacts barely an inch apart. The technique heavily strains his arms, shoulders, and back 34.
  • Combat use: Alternates between firing arrows and using a hunting bow to block like a short staff 23.
  • Transferable precision: Applies archery’s trajectory judgment and timing to thrown stones and reed-spear fishing 21 22.

Acquired Traits

Take the Hit White Slightly reduces pain and actual damage; dropped during the same confrontation 41.
Low-Grade Martial Arts Root Bone Blue Improves martial aptitude, basic external-technique training, sinew-and-bone tempering, and sensitivity to “force”; collected from Wang Kui 42.

Martial Arts and Cultivation

  • Thunderclap Fist Stance: The Thunderbolt Martial Arts Hall’s foundational routine; point-assisted mastery improves muscle engagement, breathing, and qi-and-blood circulation 31 44.
  • Oxhide/Cowhide: Toughens his skin and strengthens qi and blood. Li Xuan estimates that an ordinary woodcutting blade would probably leave only a white mark 44.
  • Blood Gates: He senses an internal barrier but has not opened the first gate. Breaking all three gates is described as the requirement for formally entering the body-tempering realm 44 48.
  • Breath-Subduing Formula: Attempts to cultivate the incomplete manual but cannot sense qi and becomes exhausted. He plans to seek discreet guidance at the martial hall 45.

Hunting and Fieldcraft

  • Tracks mountain goats, wild boars, and human thieves through snow, rain, and forest terrain 14 37 39.
  • Combines snares with carefully placed noise to drive a pheasant into a trap 8.
  • Uses trees and terrain for ambushes and elevated shooting positions 37 43.
  • Spears fish through a quietly opened ice hole using sharpened reeds and flatbread bait 20 21.

Beast Pet Enhancement

  • Has an unnamed, contract-bound forest wolf cub listed under the panel’s Beast Pet entry 18.
  • Can inspect enhancement options for individual parts, including teeth, tendons, bones, and lower-back strength 19.
  • Invests one point in the cub’s heart. By his next inspection, the formerly dying animal has become energetic, larger, and sturdier, encouraging his hopes of raising a hunting companion 34.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Battered Mulberry Hunting Bow — His first bow; severely worn, with a weak draw and a +0.1 Physique bonus 1.
  • Woodcutting Blade — Initially rusty and chipped, granting +0.1 Dexterity. Used to finish the mountain goat and kill Wang Kui 1 14 42.
  • Poor-Quality Arrows — Begins with four crude arrows with crooked shafts and rusty heads 1.
  • Ox-Horn Bow / Mulberry-Hardwood Bow — Inherited from Li Shan; grants +0.2 Physique and +0.1 Dexterity despite severe wear and can kill most medium-sized prey 12 14.
