Background / History
Poverty and Li Xuan’s change
Wang initially resents Li Xuan’s wasteful behavior, which has contributed to the family’s hunger and inability to afford Li Shan’s medicine. She is introduced wiping away tears beside her sighing husband, and later scolds Li Xuan for returning home after dark 1 3.
Her attitude softens when he brings home two rabbits and agrees to keep one for dinner while selling the other and the pelts for grain. During the meal, she gives Li Shan the softest, meatiest portions and keeps an eye on how to divide the remaining food 3 4.
The Xu marriage dispute
Matchmaker Wang’s arrival alarms her because of Li Xuan’s previous infatuation with Xu Yulian. She fears that his extravagant promises will burden the household, until he explains that they are a ploy to keep the Xu family at bay. When Xu Wang insults him and tries to take his pheasant, Wang supports his rejection of the marriage 5 6 7 9.
Village gossip and the snowstorm
The family’s improved meals change Wang’s standing among the village women. Previously accustomed to avoiding gatherings where her household was mocked, she begins taking pride in Li Xuan’s hunting success. She defends him against Widow Zhao’s claim that he merely found dead game, pointing to the pheasant’s arrow wound as evidence 13.
Her anger turns to fear when she learns that Li Xuan has entered the mountains alone in worsening weather. She sets out with Li Zhong to search for him despite Widow Zhao’s taunts. When he returns carrying mountain-goat meat and hide, Wang checks him for injuries before allowing herself to feel relieved and proud 13 15 16.
Market journey and martial training
Wang accompanies Li Zhong and Li Xuan to town with provisions and mountain goods. Along the way, she is astonished by Li Xuan’s stamina and reed-spearing technique on the frozen river. During a bandit attack, she and her husband shelter behind a rock; the bandit leader’s attempt to target them prompts Li Xuan to end the fight quickly 19 20 21 23.
At market, she helps collect payments and make change. The family earns more than twelve hundred copper coins, which she uses to buy grain and necessities. She later accepts Li Xuan’s decision to seek martial training, but repeatedly warns him against overexertion and injury 25 30 33.
The Wang Kui affair
After Li Xuan returns with half a wild boar, Wang offers to accompany the retrieval party because she does not trust the brothers to handle so much valuable meat without mishap. Li Xuan persuades her to remain home. Later, he explains the blood on himself as pig’s blood from a fall rather than telling her about killing Wang Kui and his companions 38 43.
When Constable Zhou Hong pressures the village over the deaths, Wang argues that he is upset about losing Wang Kui’s tribute payments and is using the accusations to extract money or find a scapegoat. This is her interpretation of his motives 50.
Personality
Wang is frugal and attentive to the household’s needs. She objects to roasting goat because it consumes firewood and reduces the meat’s volume, preferring stew with plentiful broth. Even after a profitable market day, she weighs quality against price and frets over the ten copper coins Li Xuan spends on sweets—though she carefully packs them away with a concealed smile 17 25.
Her sharp tongue coexists with warmth and protectiveness. She welcomes Xing’er to dinner out of sympathy, defends Li Xuan against public slander, and worries about both his hunting trips and martial training. Her growing trust in him does not erase her concern for his safety 13 15 17 30 33.
