Background / History
Wang Kui possessed considerable strength when young and used connections to enter a martial arts school in town. After several years of training, he returned to Wang Family Gully, gathered idle men into a gang, and proclaimed himself a “mountain boss” 38.
His gang repeatedly seized game from neighboring hunters, including Old Zhang and Chen Fourth, under the pretext that everyone who saw the prey deserved a share. Their actions nearly provoked a clash between the two villages. Although they became less brazen afterward, they continued targeting isolated hunters and people unlikely to resist. Wang Kui also used his martial skills and County Office connections to squeeze surrounding villages’ hunters out of their hunting grounds 39 50.
Appearance
- Build: Lean, muscular, and wiry; sturdier than an average villager 35.
- Complexion: Dark skin 35.
- Eyes and expression: Sharp eyes and a mocking half-smile during his first encounter with Li Xuan 35 36.
- Voice: Slightly hoarse 35.
- Clothing: Hunter’s attire, with a bow on his back and a woodcutting blade and leather pouch at his waist 35.
Personality
Wang Kui is contemptuous of those he considers easy prey. He dismisses Li Xuan’s success as luck, insults Li Shan, and treats stolen game as something his gang deserves. His confidence in his own strength leads him to underestimate Li Xuan’s willingness and ability to pursue him 39 40 41.
He is also calculating: he sends his companions downhill with most of the stolen meat to reduce his burden and spread the risk, while keeping a concealed shelter available for retreat. When cornered, he attacks viciously, but his bravado collapses into pleas for mercy once Li Xuan defeats him 40 42.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Training
Several years of formal training give Wang Kui greater strength and faster reactions than an ordinary hunter 39 41.
- Reacts to Li Xuan’s bowstring and rolls aside quickly enough to avoid a fatal head shot, though another arrow pierces his right upper arm 41.
- Breaks through the shelter’s flimsy wall and prepares to defend himself with his blade 41.
- Attacks left-handed after his right arm is wounded, but pain, blood loss, shock, and fury disrupt his technique 42.
- Li Xuan suspects that years away from the martial arts hall have weakened his qi and blood 44.
Attributes
| Condition | Physique | Dexterity |
|---|---|---|
| First observed by Li Xuan | 1.8 35 | 1.6 35 |
| Under Li Xuan’s Killing Intent | 1.6 41 | 1.4 41 |
Low-Grade Martial Arts Root Bone
His death produces the blue Low-Grade Martial Arts Root Bone trait, which Li Xuan collects 42.
- Slightly improves aptitude and training efficiency for basic external fist and foot techniques 42.
- Assists the tempering of sinews and bones and slightly lowers the threshold for sensing “force” 42.
- His limited root bone is presented as a major obstacle to further Blood Gate breakthroughs 45.
Mountain Experience
- Knows the local trails and the location of an abandoned shelter concealed beneath an overhanging rock 40 41.
- Li Xuan suspects him of destroying a pheasant trap and setting unfamiliar snares, but never establishes proof 36 39.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Hunting bow — Carried on his back when he meets Li Xuan 35.
- Woodcutter’s blade — Used to escape the shelter and attack Li Xuan 41 42.
- Leather pouch and meat sack — Carries a pouch at his waist and reserves tenderloin and leaf fat from the stolen boar for himself 35 41.
- Incomplete internal cultivation manual — A damaged booklet recovered after his death. Li Shan confirms its authenticity but warns that its missing material makes it unsafe to practice. Li Xuan subsequently studies it as the Breath-Subduing Formula 42 44 45.
Relationships
- Li Xuan — Target of his theft and eventual killer. Wang Kui’s death gives Li Xuan both a martial aptitude trait and an internal cultivation manual 39 42.
- Li Shan — Claims they “go way back,” but Li Shan condemns his criminal activities; Wang Kui later mocks him while dividing the stolen meat 35 38 39.
- Widow Zhao — Visits her courtyard. Li Xuan suspects she supplied information about his recent hunting successes, but this is not confirmed 35 50.
- Monkey and Erdun — Accomplices who help divide and transport the stolen boar meat. Li Xuan kills both before confronting Wang Kui 40 41.
- Zhou Hong — Sworn brother and county constable who investigates his disappearance. Wang, Li Xuan’s sister-in-law, attributes Zhou Hong’s pressure on the village to the loss of Wang Kui’s tribute payments 46 50.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Targeting Li Xuan
- Meets Li Xuan outside Widow Zhao’s home, questions his recent “luck,” and scrutinizes his bow and arrows 35.
- Is later found with two companions cutting up the boar meat Li Xuan had hidden on East Mountain, confirming his involvement in that theft 39.
Ambush and Death
- Sends Monkey and Erdun downhill with most of the meat while he stays in a hidden shelter 40 41.
- After killing both accomplices, Li Xuan shoots through the shelter’s roof, wounds Wang Kui, and blocks his escape route 41.
- Wang Kui charges with his blade. Li Xuan evades, cuts deeply into his lower back, pins him, and kills him despite his offer to return the meat 42.
- Li Xuan leaves his corpse for wolves and uses the rainy conditions to conceal evidence of the killings 43.
Investigation
- Zhou Hong questions villagers about Wang Kui’s disappearance 46.
- Men from Wang Family Gully accuse Li Family Village of killing Wang Kui and his companions 49.
- The villagers provide no incriminating information, and Zhou Hong finds nothing unusual during his inspection. Li Xuan nevertheless identifies Widow Zhao’s knowledge of Wang Kui’s interest in him as a remaining risk 50.
