History
Lunar Exploration and the Wormhole Secret
Eagle Country landed people on the Moon during the previous century. Zhong Deyuan rejects claims that the landings were fabricated, stating that he personally watched a lunar module land through an astronomical telescope 180.
It was the first country to discover the lunar Wormhole Tunnel and the unfamiliar planet later called Second Home. Information associated with an interrupted lunar broadcast remained concealed for decades, becoming known to China through its own discovery and subsequent international intelligence exchanges 181.
Zhong attributes the suspension of lunar landings to a possible combination of economic difficulties, limited returns, political assassination, spacecraft disasters, and fear of alien civilizations or unknown pathogens. He presents these explanations as speculation rather than confirmed policy 181.
Linglong’s investigation later identifies Zhao Zhen as Eugene Annan, a former Eagle Country astronaut who discovered a Wormhole Tunnel during Apollo 17. Having faked his death, he pursued immortality and participated in a secret effort to return to the Moon 211.
Renewed Exploration of Second Home
Eagle Country joins the renewed international push toward Second Home, while the Western Alliance and major financial consortiums also accelerate their preparations 215. Its joint landing site with the Western Alliance leads into a desert, distinct from Bear’s island site and China’s forest site 246.
Eugene’s later expedition discovers a pyramid-like structure beneath Artemis’s Crescent, also called Crescent Lake. The team identifies it as the Wall of Sighs and the entrance to the Garden Where the Gods Sleep. After Linglong and Russian forces destroy his outpost, the wounded Eugene joins the expedition and retreats into the Pyramid 370 371 372.
Chen Jue’s Accidental Landing and Interception
An electromagnetic disaster sends Chen Jue’s return capsule off course toward Area 15. Zhong Deyuan initially intends to request humanitarian assistance from Eagle Country’s Space Agency, but the landing site’s military jurisdiction complicates that plan 271.
Area 15 officers Bonat and Jenny instead mobilize troops to capture Chen Jue for intelligence about Second Home. When he escapes into the air, Bonat withdraws the capture-alive restriction and authorizes gunfire. Chen Jue exceeds Mach 4 and leaves the pursuing weapons behind 272.
The operation expands into a cross-regional interception involving West Coast bases. Jenny emphasizes recovering his apparent flight technology, even if only fragments remain. Chen Jue defeats the fighter interception, destroys two F-35s during the wider confrontation, and enters the sea 273 275 276.
Naval forces fail to stop him with torpedoes and depth charges. He cuts Japan’s Izumo in half and disables the propulsion of Eagle Country’s 1st Carrier Strike Group, leaving all twelve vessels stranded. He deliberately avoids sinking the nuclear-powered carrier to limit the risk of escalation 276 278 279.
Concealment and Fleet Withdrawal
Eagle Country publicly attributes the Izumo’s sinking to an ammunition-magazine accident during a joint exercise. It reports rescuing 223 Japanese personnel and restricts survivors from revealing what happened. Foreign satellite analysts nevertheless detect the immobilized carrier group 279.
The defeat disrupts subsequent deployments. Of the ten other carriers, three are undergoing maintenance; the remaining seven return to port or shorten their patrols after learning that Chen Jue severed the fleet’s propellers 304. The carrier groups stationed in Japan also become less active, and Pentagon orders reduce reconnaissance flights near China 372.
The New Humans Laboratory
Hong Mou Group operates an underground laboratory inside Mount Fuji to synthesize a drug for Eagle Country’s New Humans project 293. After discovering records of human experimentation, Chen Jue deliberately triggers the volcano’s eruption. Magma destroys the laboratory and kills its occupants, including John 295.
The Sun Wheel and Extraterrestrial Signals
Experts recover the Sun Wheel Chen Jue left inside his return capsule at Area 15 and determine that it is more than 7,600 years old 279. Chen Jue later offers to retrieve the signal-transmitting artifact, but Zhong discourages another incursion because it could provoke a world war 314.
The Sun Wheel subsequently vibrates and glows in response to an extraterrestrial signal. Bronze artifacts in China react as well, and technicians calculate the source to be 130 billion kilometers away 351.
Eagle Country uses ancient bronze artifacts and powerful radio telescopes to investigate the signals. Its transmission of human genetic information alarms Chen Jue, who considers it a danger to humanity and blames his abandoned Sun Wheel for helping enable the discovery 370.
Carrier Attacks and the Transmission Ban
Chen Jue infiltrates the USS Ronald Reagan at Eagle Country’s naval base in Japan, killing watch personnel and accessing the carrier’s internal layout 372 373. Its reactors subsequently shut down, with engineers finding the abnormal condition of no detectable radiation. Chen Jue evades electronic tracking and strikes the flight deck hard enough to tip the carrier almost vertically 374 375.
After learning that the attacked carriers’ reactors are shut down and their nuclear fuel is missing, the president accepts Chen Jue’s conditions. He orders an end to transmissions beyond Earth and instructs the Pentagon to conceal the attacks to protect Eagle Country’s military image 377.
Chen Jue then penetrates Area 15 in a spherical craft, retrieves the Sun Wheel, copies the experimental records, and destroys the base’s servers. The resulting loss of data links disables its connected weapons and command systems, allowing him to escape 380.
International Relations
- China — Strategic rival, but also a participant in private discussions with Eagle Country and the Western Alliance about disclosing Second Home. Chen Jue’s attacks repeatedly raise fears of a wider conflict 313 314.
- Western Alliance — Partner in a joint lunar landing and desert exploration site on Second Home 246.
- Japan — Hosts permanent Eagle Country forces and participates in joint naval operations. Its Izumo receives Eagle Country modifications and joins the failed interception of Chen Jue 276 372.
- Bear Country — Historical rival during the previous century’s struggle for supremacy; also independently monitors Eagle Country’s naval losses through satellite imagery 279 349.
- Chen Jue — Initially targeted for capture and technological exploitation. His repeated victories force military withdrawals, concealment of losses, and presidential acceptance of his ban on extraterrestrial transmissions 273 304 377.
