History
Life in Gongshan
Yun Xiaomei grew up dividing her time between her village and Gongshan’s forests, treating mountain animals as companions and teachers. She learned their movements and breathing so that she could travel farther to gather herbs, which she sold to tourists in town. Before meeting Chen Jue, she had never regarded these practices as martial arts 115 116.
Her grandmother taught her some medicine-making. Yun Xiaomei gathered wild herbs, including lingzhi, and prepared qi-and-blood tonics for village elders. She also learned to make Golden Dew, although she acknowledged that her own preparations were less effective than her grandmother’s 116 117.
Meeting Chen Jue
Yun Xiaomei initially trusted Chen Jue because his innocent aura resembled her own and the forest animals spoke well of him. Their conversations revealed that her apparently informal animal imitations embodied advanced martial principles. Chen Jue praised her as a self-taught Xingyi Fist grandmaster, while she insisted that she had merely picked up useful tricks 115 116.
Their exchange became reciprocal: Chen Jue taught her formal boxing and internal-alchemy principles, while her Snake Form Bone-Shaking supplied an insight he needed to perfect Dragon Roar Iron Shirt. Afterward, he shared extensive cultivation materials and continued answering her questions through WeChat 117 121 123 125.
During their mountain excursions, they helped an injured elephant calf. Yun Xiaomei treated its wound and eventually calmed its parents after Chen Jue intervened against their attacks 119 120.
Journey to Second Home
After mastering the Ten Body-Tempering Forms, Yun Xiaomei sought further instruction but received only Chen Jue’s automatic replies. Following his earlier advice, she contacted the base, underwent testing, and joined the second landing party bound for Second Home 250 256.
She immediately befriended Little Parrot, taught it human speech, and rode it through the sky. While the expedition established its outpost, Chen Jue assessed her cultivation and took her beyond the Safe Zone to learn from exotic beasts 250 251 255 256 257.
Her Beast Language made her the intermediary between Chen Jue and Bai Ze. She translated the beast’s distress, helped explain its mind-energy overload, and quickly befriended it after its condition improved. Bai Ze then led them to the cavern containing the Bai Ze Diagram 256 260 261.
Desert Exploration and Separation
Accompanying Chen Jue into the desert, Yun Xiaomei identified an ancient mural’s ox-sacrifice ceremony as Derung and wondered whether its figures were connected to her ancestors. She also helped communicate with the Vermilion Bird during an exchange involving Bai Ze’s mind crystals 264 265 266 267.
When Chen Jue decided to return to Earth to investigate the dangers in his cultivation, she chose to remain with Bai Ze, the Vermilion Bird, and Little Parrot to develop her own path. Before he left, she kissed his cheek; he recognized her affection and promised to return 268.
Much later, she sensed the closure of the wormhole linking Second Home to the Moon. Chen Jue eventually reached the planet by interstellar travel, and Yun Xiaomei and Little Parrot contacted him as his fleet arrived 402 403 404.
Appearance
- Cloud pattern on her forehead: A familiar identifying feature that Chen Jue recognizes at their Second Home reunion 250.
- Forty even, snow-white teeth: An inborn trait associated with her exceptional constitution, not the result of training 116 120.
- Expressive face: Described with large eyes, a delicate face, and a smile that narrows her eyes into crescents 115 119 123.
- Expedition clothing: Wears a heavy spacesuit over a black, formfitting combat suit on arrival at Second Home 250.
Personality
Yun Xiaomei is initially innocent, candid, and largely free of worldly ambition. Her closeness to Chen Jue begins with her perception of his sincerity rather than his strength. Although friendly with him, she would avoid a stranger whose intentions felt complicated or threatening 116 117.
Her compassion extends naturally to animals. She brings milk to weak bear cubs, treats an injured elephant, and releases a snake delivered by a black kite. She treats living creatures as equals rather than possessions; when Chen Jue praises her for “taming” Little Parrot, she corrects him that she has taught it instead 118 120 121 268.
She is also studious and increasingly independent. She works through difficult cultivation texts, asks precise questions, and joins the expedition to advance beyond the methods she has already mastered. By the time Chen Jue returns to Earth, she explicitly refuses to leave every problem for him to solve 125 192 250 256 268.
Abilities & Skills
Beast Language
An innate ability to communicate with animals through their calls and sounds 116.
- Earth wildlife: Converses with monkeys, tigers, bears, birds, and elephants; can explain their behavior and resolve misunderstandings 115 116 120.
- Exotic beasts: Communicates with Little Parrot, Feiyi, Bai Ze, and the Vermilion Bird 250 257 260 266.
- Learning unfamiliar communication: Cannot initially understand Bai Ze’s language directly, but establishes an exchange using lion- and tiger-like Beast Language sounds 260.
- Limits: Cannot communicate with the Giant Ants. Frightened or enraged animals may resist her attempts to soothe them, and Feiyi’s negative emotions make it harder to persuade 119 120 257.
- Improvement through training: Reports smoother communication after practicing Five Senses and Six Perceptions 257.
Learning from Nature
Her central talent is extracting movement, breathing, and martial intent directly from living creatures 116.
- Recognizes the butterfly principle behind Chen Jue’s lightness technique after one demonstration 116.
- Learns new boxing movements after only a few attempts and integrates them with existing techniques 117.
- Reconstructs Chen Jue’s Dragon-Tiger Union posture using animal forms rather than the hard-body arts he practiced 123.
- Develops her Ten Thousand Beasts Fist and Myriad Beasts Dao through continued observation of exotic beasts 257 259 268.
Animal-Derived Martial Techniques
| Technique / Inspiration | Applications |
|---|---|
| Ape and Monkey Forms | Agile movement and evasion; uses Ape-Form footwork against attacking elephants 116 119. |
| Serow-derived movement | Light, lively mountain travel; Chen Jue interprets it as a self-created Deer Form movement technique 116. |
| Tiger-Leopard Thunder Sound | An advanced animal-derived skill mastered before formal instruction 117. |
| Turtle-Form Embryonic Breathing | Draws qi and blood inward toward the Shangqu Acupoint, gradually strengthening her constitution and concealing her presence 116 250. |
| Snake Form Bone-Shaking | Soft, rhythmic movement through the spine and body; inspires Chen Jue’s insight into Dragon Form and marrow transformation 121. |
| Old Bear Shaking Off Lice | Produces skin tremors used in her reconstruction of the Dragon-Tiger Union posture 123. |
| Kui Ox imitation | Incorporates thunderous breathing resonance and a one-legged stance into her developing beast intent 259. |
Perception and Mental Cultivation
Her unusual perception initially allows her to distinguish good and evil intentions and recognize the character expressed through martial intent 116.
- Perceives Chen Jue’s Core Formation as a bamboo shoot breaking through the earth, using natural imagery to understand his transformation 122.
- Produces a mental-field frequency that draws ambient True Qi toward her, which Chen Jue identifies with Unity of Heaven and Man 256.
- Gains greater understanding from Bai Ze’s true essence, though the initial influx of energy and information causes head pressure and requires rest 262.
- Eventually senses planetary magnetic-field changes and projects her mental magnetic field outward to communicate 403 404.
Herbal Medicine
- Identifies and gathers medicinal plants across Gongshan’s forests 116.
- Prepares qi-and-blood tonics and a less effective version of her grandmother’s Golden Dew 116 117.
- Applies herbs and cloth bandages to an elephant calf’s bleeding foot 120.
Equipment / Items
- Back basket — Carries gathered herbs, food, animal feed, medicine, and cloth usable for bandaging 117 120 121.
- Golden Dew — Her family’s costly herbal preparation. Supplies Chen Jue with a sample from her grandmother and arranges his larger order 117 120 125.
- Spacesuit and combat suit — Expedition clothing used during her arrival on Second Home 250.
- Dagger — Uses it to draw on tree bark while teaching Little Parrot 255.

Relationships
- Chen Jue — Teacher, fellow cultivator, and romantic interest. Their instruction is reciprocal: he supplies formal knowledge, while her natural techniques inspire his breakthroughs. She kisses him before their separation, and he later crosses interstellar space to reach her 117 121 125 268 404.
- Grandmother — Raises her with practical mountain provisions and teaches her medicine-making; the more accomplished maker of the family’s Golden Dew 117 120.
- Little Parrot — A childlike companion she teaches and cares for. It calls her “Mama,” carries her in flight, and learns to gather supplies under her guidance 250 251 255 268.
- Bai Ze — Friend, cultivation companion, and later guide in studying the myriad beasts. Offers its fur as a resting place after she absorbs the diagram’s energy and helps her perceive changes in Second Home’s magnetic field 261 262 403 404.
- Grandpa Turtle — A mountain turtle over two hundred years old whose breathing and movements inform her Turtle Form 116 117.
- Flower Tiger, Old Black Bear, and the mountain monkeys — Longstanding animal companions whose behavior supplies several of her earliest martial forms 115 116.
- Sun Wu and Luo Qiong — Fellow expedition members associated with Second Home’s outpost; she relies on their presence when reassuring Chen Jue that he can return to Earth 250 268.
Notable Quotes
