Background / History
Lu Ran comes from a family closely associated with animals. His father, Lu Qiancheng, was a zoologist and former Jinling University professor; his mother, Lu Yunxiu, was a biologist and former Imperial Capital University professor. Both later worked as biological consultants for the Natural Life Company. His paternal grandfather, Lu Hai, was a hunter and village chief of Lujia Village, while his grandmother, Lu Ying, was the village veterinarian 22.
His parents were confirmed dead five years before the authorities investigated his background. They had been attacked while studying an undiscovered rare beast in an overseas rainforest; their bodies were never recovered. Lu Ran remained unwilling to accept their deaths and wanted to visit the rainforest to search for them 4 22.
The Fang family adopted him after his parents’ deaths. Fang Lan’s parents had been close friends of his own parents, and he grew up with her as his older sister. Once he could look after himself, he moved out, supported by the substantial inheritance his parents left behind 1.
His parents encouraged his interests in animals, swords, and firearms. They arranged for him to study at Rainbow Sky Dojo, where his talent earned Jiang Dou’s personal instruction and nearly made him the master’s final disciple. He later shifted his attention to shooting, which he learned during a trip to Hawaii with his father. Jiang Dou also supported him around the time his parents died 4 38.
Two years before the opening events, Lu Ran acquired Telepathy. Alongside it came recurring dreams of monsters overrunning a city and killing him. Medical examinations found nothing wrong, but the experiences drove his interest in supernatural reports and eventually influenced his decision to use the Black Card 2 3.
Appearance
- A teenage boy; Senior Brother He notices that his face has become somewhat more mature when they reunite 22 39.
- Wears a black hoodie, white shorts, and a sun hat on his trip to Jinling 39.
- Carries a small white, broken-antler-shaped pendant on a cord, inherited from his mother 4.
Personality
Lu Ran is independent and resistant to being managed. Fang Lan considers him rebellious, and he skips supplementary classes to enter insect-fighting tournaments despite being a top student. Once bug fighting ceases to challenge him, he looks for another outlet for himself and his combative husky 1 22.
His confidence is backed by experimentation. He studies training theory, tests unconventional uses of Super Beast Mimicry, and turns his own swordsmanship into a development path for General Ha. He also jokes and boasts about his successes, including teasing Fang Lan about their different trial ratings 17 18 21.
Ambition does not erase his caution. He keeps the Divine Deer Pendant secret, retreats when the Demon Cat Leader’s reinforcements make a fight unfavorable, and warns General Ha not to accept avoidable injuries merely because healing is available. His desire for strength is tied to protecting himself, his family, and the city threatened in his dreams 8 10 32.
He is deeply attached to his animals and family. He worries immediately upon learning that Fang Lan entered a trial, allows General Ha to rest rather than pushing him through exhaustion, and hesitates to make the fearful Sudden Death King a meat shield. Although resurrecting a dead pet appeals to him, he rejects hunting Beast Tamers and questions whether an undead pet without its old memories would still be the same companion 16 42 49.
Abilities & Skills
Telepathy
- Reads the inner voices of nonhuman creatures and communicates with animals 2.
- Uses insects’ observations to predict rain and to dominate insect-fighting tournaments 1 2.
- Questions animals as witnesses, including a crow that reports the escaped tiger and squirrels that witnessed a murder 20 44.
- Works more easily with intelligent animals; with less intelligent creatures, he must interpret thoughts through instinctive behavior 20.
- Fails against the Demon Cat projection encountered in the beginner trial 5.
- General Ha’s erratic mind initially resists normal communication, while the timid Red-Eyed Hawk Lizard is also difficult to communicate with 3 23.
Super Beast Mimicry
- Grants strength and skills through imitation of a contracted pet beast’s behavior 9.
- Lu Ran trains General Ha as a sword user, then imitates that swordsmanship instead of simply copying ordinary husky behavior 17 18.
- Extends imitation into shared food and daily routines, though he refuses to wear a husky costume or train on all fours 34.
- His improved physique lets him throw stones two or three hundred meters and jump beyond the world record; he estimates that one punch could kill a cow 34.
- Develops a proposed “Super Beast Mimicry 2.0,” using Telepathy to convey his own training insights back to General Ha 34.
Swordsmanship and Sword Intent
- Received personal instruction from Jiang Dou at Rainbow Sky Dojo 38.
- Deflects a Necromancer’s throwing knife with his sword 48.
- Projects a savage, beastlike sword intent that overwhelms the dojo’s apprentices. Jiang Dou perceives an intimidating image resembling a wolf king 39.
- Sword intent is documented; the more advanced sword will remains a future possibility discussed by Jiang Dou, not an attained ability 41.
Eye of Data
- Receives a fuller temporary version during the Novice Trial, allowing him to inspect encountered creatures 5 9.
- Retains a basic version afterward, limited to himself, his own pet beast, and lower-rarity resources and items 9.
- Uses it to identify equipment properties and compare purchases at the forge 26.
Animal Training and Combat Planning
- Raised General Ha from puppyhood and trained him to obey instructions more reliably than a police dog 3.
- Builds skill training around Energy Release, Energy Flow, Energy Shaping, and Energy Compression, with Energy Coating as the foundation 17 25.
- Recognizes that species rank does not measure learning ability and prioritizes General Ha’s exceptional comprehension 18 21.
- Identifies Sword Aura’s stamina cost and straight-line trajectory as weaknesses, considering improved energy control or a support pet with control skills 31 33.
- Has firearms training, though the supplied events do not show him using a gun in combat 4.
Pet Beasts
- General Ha — His first contracted pet, a husky raised from puppyhood. Lu Ran chooses him for their bond, obedience, and fighting spirit, then develops him into a Wind-attribute sword user 3 17 20.
- Sudden Death King — His Red-Eyed Hawk Lizard, originally a birthday gift from Fang Lan. By the Jinling visit, it has undergone supernatural evolution and possesses exceptional defense. An Attribute Stone reveals Lightning aptitude; Lu Ran considers developing it as a defensive partner for General Ha. No second contract is documented in the supplied chapters 23 38 39 42 45.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Divine Deer Antler / Divine Deer Pendant — Epic maternal family heirloom with powerful healing effects. It enables sustained trial hunting and helps offset the injuries caused by Energy Surge Fruit. Lu Ran conceals it because it is both a precious keepsake and a transferable treasure others could steal 4 7 8 10 34 50.
- Contract Black Card — Used to contract, recall, and summon General Ha 4 5.
- Identity Card — Displays Beast Tamer ID 9528 and provides Communication, Party, Inventory, and Teleport functions 9.
- Iron-Slashing Sword — Custom-made one-handed sword used for personal practice. It is left behind during the initial trial teleport 4 5 18.
- Windfall Sword — High-grade sword forged by Master Lin from Lu Ran’s meteoric iron reward. Conducts and amplifies Wind energy; assigned to General Ha 26 30.
- Wind-Slaying Sword — Lu Ran’s high-grade enchanted sword. Its wind blades consume his stamina, and its Storm Slash can sever a massive tree. He avoids overusing the enchantment because of the drain 26 30 32.
- Basic Training Manual — Purchased from the Cat-Eared Maid Café for 100 Crystal Coins; supplies the foundation for his energy-training plans 16 17.
- Energy Surge Fruit — Temporarily accelerates a low-level creature’s energy flow at the cost of severe bodily damage. Lu Ran buys five and uses the experience as a training aid for General Ha 29 34.
- Awakening Leaf — Accepted from Pig Farmer in exchange for extended sparring; tests animals’ aptitude to become extraordinary 35.
- Jiang Man’s Diary — Given to him by Jiang Dou as guidance and a warning. Its account introduces him to Fusion, Trait Borrowing, and the Weapon Mastery trait 39 40.
Relationships
- Fang Lan — Adoptive older sister and childhood companion. She pushes him to attend school, exchanges Beast Tamer information with him, and becomes a friendly rival through their pets’ performances 1 21 34.
- Fang Yuhang and Su Ya — Adoptive parents, whom he also calls godfather and godmother. They worry about his safety and ask him and Fang Lan to help them become Beast Tamers 1 38.
- Lu Qiancheng and Lu Yunxiu — Deceased biological parents. Their encouragement shaped his interests, while uncertainty surrounding their deaths motivates his wish to investigate the overseas rainforest 4 22.
- Jiang Dou — Childhood swordsmanship teacher and supportive elder. Welcomes Lu Ran back but fears that Beast Taming could lead him to the same fate as Jiang Man 38 39 42.
- Senior Brother He / He Dali — Familiar senior from Rainbow Sky Dojo. Recognizes Lu Ran during the mistaken challenge and arranges his accommodation 39 42.
- Little White Dragon Amid the Waves / Bai Junjie — Early guide to Infinite City and official contact. Helps with attribute testing, trading, registration, schooling, and contacting Jinling authorities 10 12 13 24 44.
- Pig Farmer — Fellow newcomer and sparring partner. Trades an Awakening Leaf for additional practice against General Ha 27 34 35.
- Gu Qingyi — First-Generation Beast Tamer connected to him through Fang Lan. Officials believe she backs him, but she does not recognize his name when Manager Ying asks about him 21 23 49.
- Manager Ying — Cat-Eared Maid Café owner and intelligence contact. Helps arrange the Necromancer encounter, blocks the enemy’s escape, and becomes interested in Lu Ran’s potential and General Ha’s origins 46 47 48 49.
- Zhao Chen — Jinling official who investigates Lu Ran’s murder report and coordinates the response after the Necromancer’s defeat 44 49.
- Master Lin — Blacksmith who forges General Ha’s Windfall Sword and sells Lu Ran his own enchanted sword 25 26 27.
