Background / History

Primordial City and the Beast Pet Tournament

Guo Dundun is the son of Guo Mingzhi, Primordial City’s city lord, and Jiang Hao’s deskmate and best friend. His association with the increasingly famous “Chicken Bro” attracts attention during the tournament, including mockery from an opponent whom he subsequently defeats 13 18.

After Guo Dundun reaches the tournament’s second stage, his father urges him to cultivate Jiang Hao as a potentially valuable connection. Guo Dundun rejects that interpretation of their friendship, insisting that Jiang Hao is his brother regardless of status or background. He also resents his father’s earlier choice of a beast pet with limited potential 18.

He joins the tournament team formed around Jiang Hao, Wen Ruxue, and Gongsun Qianxun. Song Jie and Chen Xiaolin later join them during the survival competition, when the group chooses a less-traveled route through swamp and ridge terrain 18 26.

Military Service and Appointment

Guo Dundun enlists alongside Jiang Hao and their companions, traveling from Primordial City to the City of Eternity and sharing Tent 79. When Qian Zhonglin provokes them, Guo Dundun nearly punches him before Jiang Hao intervenes 54.

His loyalty remains outspoken as the army grows. He confronts Yang Qian and the women accompanying her over their earlier treatment of Jiang Hao, orders them away, and releases Pang Dudu to intimidate them 102.

Following the defeat of He Qin’s army and the relief of Shenzhou, King Han rewards Jiang Hao and the Self-Defense Army’s commanders. Guo Dundun subsequently identifies himself as Marquis of Peace and General of the Cavalry 130 150.

His appointment as Combat Division director initially benefits from Jiang Hao’s support. Guo Dundun recognizes that some stronger Beast Tamers respect his position without genuinely accepting his leadership; his closeness to Jiang Hao and lack of mistakes have helped keep him unchallenged 146.

Wumeng City Breakout

Guo Dundun helps lead an infiltration of Wumeng City disguised as a slave movement. When the operation is exposed, he kills the captain escorting the group and stays behind to confront General Qin, allowing Yu Guangguang to lead the soldiers toward the gate 144.

Huo Jiajun joins General Qin, turning the fight into a confrontation with two Divine Valor Realm experts. Guo Dundun reaches the city wall, but Huo Jiajun freezes him with Absolute Ice Seal and kicks him from its roughly twenty-meter height 144 145.

The New-Style Potion supplied by Jiang Hao repairs his injuries, while Pang Dudu advances to the middle stage of the Divine Valor Realm. When Yu Guangguang returns with reinforcements, Guo Dundun orders them away and faces General Qin and the pursuing army himself 145 146.

He kills General Qin by breaking his spine, then leaves the corpse before the remaining troops and declares his name and affiliation. He subsequently catches another pursuing force of roughly a thousand soldiers, killing many before the survivors flee. By the time he rejoins his men, both he and Pang Dudu are exhausted 146.

The feat of holding off an army of ten thousand earns him the soldiers’ admiration and the recognition he had previously doubted he deserved as Combat Division director 146.

Baishan Town and Chongtian Town

At Baishan Town, Guo Dundun organizes defensive works and special training for more than forty thousand rescued slaves, putting them on the walls to resist the Northern Barbarians. Wang Chongqing later approaches with fifty thousand troops 148 149.

Guo Dundun uses captured female relatives of the Grand Lords as bargaining leverage, demanding ransoms in rare beast crystals. His demands include ten thousand crystals for Xu Shi and fifty thousand for Yang Shi. He signals Yu Guangguang to coerce a reluctant captive into identifying herself, and refuses Bai Bingbing’s request to ransom herself after promising her to Yu Guangguang 150.

Unable to shake their pursuers in unfamiliar terrain, Guo Dundun and Yu Guangguang divide their forces. Guo Dundun leads the original Self-Defense Army soldiers toward the Han Palace Royal Court as a diversion, while Yu Guangguang takes the Baishan recruits to raid supply lines 153.

Near Chongtian Town, Guo Dundun recruits Qin Shu, a boy persecuted for his Shenzhou ancestry. Qin Shu guides the army through a sewer into the town. Guo Dundun lends him a dagger to kill three childhood tormentors, but stops him from personally killing his father, unwilling to let the boy carry the guilt of patricide. He then joins the attack on the garrison in Bearman form 153 154.

Encirclement and Rescue

Zuo Xianning’s forces intercept Guo Dundun’s army, placing approximately nine thousand men against twenty thousand and a Transcendent Master. Guo Dundun recognizes that he cannot defeat Zuo Xianning and prioritizes getting survivors through the encirclement 155.

By their final confrontation, fewer than a thousand soldiers remain with him. He urges them to scatter, but they refuse to abandon him. Jiang Hao arrives on Big Hen before Zuo Xianning can force their surrender 160.

Guo Dundun initially refuses to leave Jiang Hao behind. He yields only after Jiang Hao insists, recognizing the similarity to his own earlier decision to cover his comrades’ retreat 161.

Later North Sea Campaign and Court Politics

After returning, Guo Dundun participates in the Star-Making Plan, during which Pang Dudu becomes a rare Battlefield Brute Bear. Liao Yunxiao later warns the participants about the plan’s dangers and determines that the New-Style Potion prevented lasting harm to their pets 169.

Jiang Hao leaves him commanding the assault on Hengyang City during a secret expedition. When Wumeng City comes under attack, Guo Dundun proposes taking the Beast Tamer Battalion back to help, but other officers warn that the distance, supplies, and Xiao Lin’s strength make the plan impractical 184.

During subsequent fighting, he clears a section of wall through brute force and later rushes to protect two frozen comrades from being pushed off the battlements 197 198.

He questions Jiang Hao’s decision to hand the remaining North Sea campaign and its military credit to Han Su and Cai Tianming. Jiang Hao explains that sharing achievements will build allies and reduce royal suspicion of the Self-Defense Army 207.

During Wei Chun’s attempted coup, Guo Dundun confronts him over his private death warriors and reveals that the Wei family has already been taken into custody 215.

Cangling War

Guo Dundun leads fifty thousand Self-Defense Army troops to recover Primordial City in a single day, freeing his father and the other imprisoned officials. His reunion with Guo Mingzhi is emotional: his father is proud of his achievements but ashamed that his son had to retake the city 249 251.

Against General Shangguan, Guo Dundun’s cavalry deployment leaves his left flank vulnerable to an elite enemy charge. He orders an all-out attack to force a decisive engagement before the flank collapses, while Guo Mingzhi brings out Primordial City’s First, Third, and Fifth Battalions to reinforce it 251.

After the costly battle, Guo Dundun refuses repeated provocations, reassesses the enemy’s weakened position, and conceals cavalry rather than rushing into a suspected ambush. General Shangguan is eventually defeated and brought before him as a prisoner 252 253 254.

Under Han Qing’s decree to end the invasion within a month, Guo Dundun personally leads ten thousand troops to reinforce Yang Qingliu near Hanshan City. He challenges Han Cheng to a decisive battle after three days of rest 258.

At twenty-two, he personally leads two thousand cavalry against Han Cheng’s larger Desert Cavalry force. Fighting without Fusion, he defeats Han Cheng in their brief exchange and routs the enemy riders. Rather than pursue them, he redirects his cavalry into the Cangling infantry’s left wing 259 260.

When the Desert Star later arrives, he refuses to abandon the campaign and assigns Shen Zaitian and Liu Zhiwei fifty thousand troops to contain it. He subsequently avoids pursuit into a concealed heavy-cavalry ambush, fortifying his camp instead 265 270.

Upon Jiang Hao’s return, Guo Dundun welcomes him with an emotional embrace. Jiang Hao praises the officers’ growth and assigns Guo Dundun to advance toward the Fallen Spirit Forest. Guo Dundun later identifies Cangling’s attempt to pin down Shenzhou’s forces and urges attacks on scattered Desert Star cavalry 273 282.

Appearance

Guo Dundun is a plump young man with small eyes; his size makes climbing onto the tournament platform and squeezing through Chongtian Town’s sewer difficult 13 153 154.

  • Bearman form: Approximately four meters tall, with thick bear fur and a massive physique 144 145.
  • Battlefield attire: Wears armor; later appears in golden armor with a windblown cloak while commanding from a war chariot 260 268.
  • Mounted appearance: Rides a Snow-White War Wolf and carries a refined-iron spear when leading cavalry 260.

Personality

Guo Dundun is fiercely loyal to Jiang Hao and rejects treating their friendship as a route to advancement. His protectiveness can become openly confrontational, particularly toward people who insult Jiang Hao or previously mistreated him 18 54 102.

Although hot-tempered and fond of boasting, he can remain patient at decisive moments. His refusal to respond to Shangguan’s taunts and his caution toward Situ Long’s retreat contrast with his impulsive manner outside strategic decisions 146 253 270. By the later campaign, even Qian Zhonglin notices how much calmer he has become 271.

His concern for comrades is practical as well as emotional: he repeatedly covers retreats, shares the dangers of cavalry charges, jokes with ordinary soldiers, and considers recreational activities important for troops under pressure 145 160 260 270 271.

That solidarity does not extend equally to enemies. He endorses eliminating anyone who poses a threat, enables Qin Shu’s revenge, and uses captives for coercive ransom negotiations. His decision to prevent Qin Shu’s patricide reflects a specific moral boundary rather than a general rejection of violence 150 154.

Abilities & Skills

Beast Pet Fusion

Guo Dundun merges with Pang Dudu to become a powerful Bearman suited to close combat 13 144.

  • Combines heavy striking power and durability with speed comparable to the Divine Valor Realm opponents pursuing him at Wumeng City 144.
  • Can leap onto town walls and break through packed enemy formations 154 197.
  • Cannot ride his War Wolf in Bearman form because the mount cannot support its weight 260.

Combat Techniques

  • Intimidation: A roar that overwhelms an opponent with fear or briefly pins them in place; used against the escort captain and General Qin 144.
  • Heavy Strike: A powerful blow used to kill a Mountain Moving Realm captain after Intimidation 144.
  • Mountain-Pulling Strength: Used to lift General Qin overhead before breaking his spine across a raised knee 146.
  • Sweep Across a Thousand Armies: A sweeping attack that knocks clustered enemies from a city wall 197.

Reinforced Defense and Recovery

Skin Strengthening and Jiang Hao’s New-Style Potion allow Guo Dundun to endure attacks that would otherwise be fatal 145 197.

  • Survives being frozen and thrown from Wumeng City’s wall; the potion continuously repairs damaged flesh and later heals his injured leg 145.
  • Endures General Qin’s claw attacks and ordinary enemy blades with little effect 146 198.
  • Is not immune to restraint or exhaustion: Absolute Ice Seal temporarily immobilizes him, lingering cold stiffens his movements, and sustained fighting leaves him barely able to walk 145 146.
  • Does not consider himself capable of defeating a Transcendent Master such as Zuo Xianning alone 155.

Spearmanship and Cavalry Combat

Guo Dundun remains dangerous without Fusion, wielding a spear weighing dozens of jin with considerable agility 260.

  • Disables enemy mounts and unhorses riders during a cavalry charge 260.
  • Gets the better of Han Cheng in a brief mounted exchange without using his beast pet 260.
  • Trains his cavalry against maneuvers modeled on the Desert Star, enabling them to match the enemy riders’ dispersal and mobility 260.

Military Command

His command experience includes infiltration, raids, siege defense, combined infantry formations, and cavalry operations 144 148 249 260.

  • Organizes rescued slaves into defenders and introduces special training 148.
  • Coordinates heavy infantry, archers, crossbowmen, and ranged Beast Tamers 249.
  • Uses concealed cavalry, scouting, and deliberate refusal of battle to counter enemy traps 253.
  • Recognizes when pursuit is unsafe and relies on trenches, chevaux-de-frise, and fortified positions instead 270.
  • Raises morale through personal participation in dangerous fighting and direct contact with soldiers 260 270.
