Background / History
Polaris entered Age of Mysteries hoping to support his grandmother, his only remaining relative. Her illness required an amputation, and he wanted to buy her a Mechanical Prosthesis. He also hoped to move them out of Iron Tower City, while avoiding conglomerate loans whose interest he believed he could never repay 184 282.
An experienced gamer without guild or financial backing, he treated his Closed Beta encounter with Jack as a long-term opportunity. When Jack appeared in the Open Beta cinematic as “the one guided by fate,” Polaris took it as confirmation that his decision to follow the NPC had been correct 184 185 222.
By level 22, his earnings were sufficient to purchase his grandmother’s prosthesis. He was preparing to move them from low-rent housing into a better apartment complex and hoped eventually to afford life in Splendid City 282.
Appearance
Polaris’s game avatar is an ordinary-looking man with short black hair and unremarkable features. At the Open Beta launch, he wore dress trousers, a high-collared white shirt, Mechanical Gloves, and a Blunderbuss at his waist 184.
- Crocodile armor: Dark green, armor-like keratin covers the parts of his body protected by Animal Mimicry 229.
- Transformed hand: Crocodile Bite turns his hand or arm into a crocodile’s head and jaws 229 230.
- Transformed legs: Gazelle Leap produces antelope-like hooves 224 229.
- Later combat form: Footage shows a crocodile-like head, keratin-covered body, and antelope hooves 422.
- Portrait-empowered form: Jack’s temporary enhancement enveloped his head in crocodile armor, gave him scarlet eyes, and released blood-red vapor from his body 290.
Personality
Polaris is independent but cooperative. Although he sometimes feels isolated among teammates with guild affiliations or shared interests, he declines Dongyang’s offer of a Hall of Heroes officer position because he prefers remaining unaffiliated. During expeditions, he treats collected materials as shared loot and proposes rolling for valuable items, with compensation for the other participants 116 209 214.
His caution is grounded in gaming experience: he recognizes suspicious treasure placements, checks dangerous enemies, and favors maintaining distance when investigating unknown encounters. He nevertheless accepts calculated risks when Sanity or expedition time is running out 116 137 211 219.
He is ambitious without being blindly imitative. Rather than copy Jack’s animal selections, he builds a combat style around his own needs as a solo player. He also reinvests earnings into equipment instead of saving so aggressively that he loses future opportunities 224 282.
Polaris’s gratitude toward Jack is sincere, but his view of the Circus remains pragmatic. He considers it a neutral, self-interested faction rather than assuming its conflict with the Red Apple Church makes it inherently righteous 282 425.
Abilities & Skills
Beast Speech
The exclusive skill Polaris gains upon becoming a Sequence 9 Beast Tamer 222.
- Enables communication with animals and commands them in battle 223.
- Unlike Beast Speech, Animal Mimicry was not automatically included in his advancement; he learned it separately from Jack 222 223.
Animal Mimicry
Polaris’s principal combat skill, taught by Jack after he becomes his contracted representative. It records animal traits that he can reproduce through bodily transformations 223 224.
- Memory limit: Three stored traits, compared with Jack’s ten 224.
- Training: Recording his initial three traits required repeated attempts and nearly exhausted his stamina 224.
- Development: He invested all his accumulated skill points into the ability before the Kazt defensive battle 247.
- Combat integration: Combines transformations with Mechanical Glove fire attacks 247.
| Trait | Source | Applications and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Gazelle Leap / Antelope Hooves | Gazelle | Provides speed, sharp changes of direction, evasive leaps, and rapid approaches. Polaris chose maneuverability over the cheetah’s straight-line speed 224 229 239. |
| Crocodile Bite | Saltwater crocodile | Transforms his hand into crocodile jaws. Can decapitate comparable players or tear away flesh, but initially could not penetrate Sequence 7 Aokang’s defenses 224 229 230 289. |
| Crocodile Hide / Crocodile Armor | Saltwater crocodile | Produces protective keratin. Blocks heavy blows, supports armored shoulder strikes, and protects his transformed jaws against weapons 224 229 239. |
Survival of the Fittest
A passive learned from Jack after Polaris reaches the version 1.0 level cap 421 424.
- Increases Strength, Dexterity, Endurance, Charisma, and Insight by one point each per skill level 424.
- Gives him additional raw attributes despite the player level restriction 424.
- Cost him 300 Contribution at his discounted student rate 424.
Combat Tactics and Leadership
Polaris combines close-range transformations, firearms, explosives, and situational command 215 217 239.
- Rapid reactions: Shoots a concealed ratman beside Ma Ren in a dark passage before directing the group’s retreat and firing line 215.
- Explosive attacks: Uses a suicide-bombing tactic to defeat an armored ratman assessed at the limit of Sequence 9 217.
- Controlled pursuit: Draws Gan Ziwen away from the crowded train station before subduing him, avoiding civilian casualties that would reduce his mission reward 239.
- Target selection: Identifies vital-point accuracy and smoother trait switching as areas for improvement after his first major PvP event 230.
Limitations
- High-health opponents: Without consumables, he cannot quickly finish Doghead Gold and Wangwuji through their large health pools and strong recovery 230.
- Sequence disparity: His normal attacks cannot meaningfully threaten Sequence 7 Aokang. Even Jack’s temporary enhancement does not let him safely overpower the Ghoul head-on 289 290.
- Player penalties: Death can cost him levels, Wonderland drains Sanity, and resurrection opportunities can be exhausted 137 141 213.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Connie No. 1 Mechanical Gloves — Earned for his leading contribution to the Red Apple Cathedral assault. Allow him to launch fireballs while still a mortal; sustained overloading causes overheating, and operation requires Fuel Blocks 134 213.
- Flintlock / Blunderbuss — A regular ranged weapon, including a fallback when his Mechanical Gloves become unusable 184 213 215.
- Silver Snake Ring — His Circus Full Member token, used to verify his identity at Jack Manor 185 186.
- Jack’s Character Paint / Oil Painting of Jack — A single-use supernatural portrait gifted by Jack 282.
- Serpent Hand magic scroll — Jack’s gift containing animal magic. Releases a giant white python that restrains Aokang, then divides into five snakes that continue attacking him 282 289.
- Bombs and supplies — Purchases red and blue bombs, potions, ammunition, and replacement fuel through Circus exchanges 282.
- Jack’s letter — Keeps the letter describing the Circus’s expansion rather than surrendering it to Ma Ren as a souvenir 186.
Relationships
- Chen Lun / Jack Spade — Mentor, faction leader, and the NPC Polaris credits with changing his life. Jack selects him as his player representative, teaches him skills, and later permits him to publicly identify as his disciple 223 282.
- Grandmother — His only remaining relative and the primary motivation behind his efforts to earn money through the game 184 282.
- Su Keying — His longest-standing and closest companion among the early players. They temporarily stay together in-game to coordinate their activities; she records battles and openly supports him 109 230.
- Dongyang — Teammate, PvP opponent, and would-be recruiter. Respects Polaris’s expedition leadership, offers him a Hall of Heroes officer position, and promises compensation for his contributions against Aokang 213 214 291.
- Ma Ren — Early teammate and frequent expedition companion. Polaris protects him from a ratman ambush but also defeats him during the staged PvP spectacle 84 215 229.
- Doghead Gold and Wangwuji — Teammates and sparring opponents. Their combined durability forces a draw against Polaris despite his control of the fight 230.
- Gan Ziwen — Target of a Circus Kill Order whom Polaris captures. Polaris refuses his offer of a private payment for release 239.
- Noah — Circus officer who assists with Gan Ziwen’s capture by sealing the prisoner’s supernatural power 239.
- Fuluoyin — Circus officer who handles commissions and exchanges. Warns Polaris that inspecting others without permission is rude and dangerous 186 187.
Shadow Contract with Jack
Polaris signs a Shadow Contract to become Jack’s representative and nominal student, accepting restrictions in exchange for free guidance and instruction 223.
| Term | Effect |
|---|---|
| Faction bond | Establishes a deep bond with Jack and binds Polaris to the Circus 223. |
| Immediate benefits | Jack’s favorability rises to close; Polaris receives a 20% discount on Circus merchandise and learns Animal Mimicry free 223. |
| Betrayal penalty | Triggers Oathbreaker, a permanent curse attributed to Conrad, an Angel of the Conspiracy Faction 223. |
| Curse effects | Permanently reduces all attributes by 90%; maximum health and stamina cannot exceed 100 223. |

- Continues strengthening his character beyond the level cap by learning Survival of the Fittest from Jack 424.
