"Hong Kong? 1982?" Gu Sheng sat by the street, sorted through the memories in his head, and spat.
"And I'm a gangland grunt. The most fucked-up part is, I'm an undercover cop too."
"Yuen Long's so poor all it's got left is cow shit, and they sent me here undercover? They could've at least sent me to Causeway Bay or Portland Street."
He'd woken up with a whole new identity. What the hell was this?
He didn't want to be a gangster or an undercover cop. He just wanted to make money, and making money in this era was far easier than it would be decades later.
With enough guts and a quick mind, there were plenty of ways to rake it in. As long as he was careful not to get caught, wouldn't any of them beat this?
The main problem was that being a gangland grunt didn't pay much either-just a little over a thousand dollars a month.
Even a regular job paid two thousand. The risk and the reward didn't remotely match.
Soon, Gu Sheng discovered something in his memories. He pulled his waistband out and peered down, unable to keep a grin off his face.
"This whole transmigration thing isn't all bad."
"Brother Sheng, the boss's wife is heading out." A young man with rather large eyes came over and called to him. His name was Big-Eyed Hua.
"Then let her head out. What the fuck's that got to do with me?" Gu Sheng replied without thinking.
"Brother Sheng, it's our shift today. Did you forget?" Big-Eyed Hua asked in surprise.
Gu Sheng searched through the memories in his head. Sure enough, it was his and Big-Eyed Hua's shift. They had to accompany the boss's wife when she went out-in plain terms, they were bodyguards and bag carriers.
He spat on the ground again. "Being a gangland grunt is worse than having a regular job."
"Huh?" Gu Sheng soon dug up another memory, and his mouth spread into a grin. The previous owner of this body had actually been sleeping with the boss's wife.
That perked him right up.
"Come on. Where's she going?" Gu Sheng got up and brushed off his backside.
"She's going to Hansa to get her hair done," Big-Eyed Hua said, tugging Gu Sheng along as they walked.
"Her hair? Getting her hair done is great. I love going with her to get her hair done." Gu Sheng promptly cast aside his annoyance at having transmigrated and followed Big-Eyed Hua, sorting through his memories as he walked.
"Brother Sheng, you'll be in trouble if someone hears that," Big-Eyed Hua said quietly.
"What's wrong with getting her hair done? Beats going shopping with her, doesn't it? You walk until you can't even feel your feet. At least at the salon there's air-conditioning and somewhere to sit," Gu Sheng said offhandedly.
Big-Eyed Hua nodded. "That's true."
Gu Sheng continued sorting through his memories.
Hongxing? Yuen Long? A boss called Ah Sin?
And the current dragon head is Chiang Tin-sang?
Teem-Kwan runs Mong Kok, and Big B is the boss of Tsz Wan Shan...
This sounds familiar. Is this Young and Dangerous? The movies or the comics? I've seen some of the movies, but I've never read the comics.
He hadn't met the others, but he had met Big B, Chan Ho-nam, and a few of Chan Ho-nam's followers. At first glance, they looked about fifty or sixty percent like he remembered.
Big B was on good terms with his boss, Ah Sin.
And this world already has brick phones. Those shouldn't be around in 1982 either, should they?
Half a month ago, his boss had ordered his men to beat up a young fellow-the younger brother of Tung Sing's Thunderclap Tiger. Thunderclap Tiger had threatened to deal with Ah Sin, so for the past two weeks, men had been taking shifts escorting the boss's wife whenever she went out. Today was Gu Sheng and Big-Eyed Hua's turn.
Before long, the two of them saw a woman coming downstairs from the apartment building, wearing sunglasses and a short skirt, her hair in loose waves.
"Boss's wife!" they greeted her in unison.
The eyes behind the sunglasses swept over Gu Sheng. Then she walked ahead, casually tossing them the keys.
She'd been with Ah Sin since she was sixteen and was only twenty-three this year. Her waist swayed like a water snake as she walked, and Gu Sheng followed behind without taking his eyes off her.
Big-Eyed Hua drove. A few streets later, they arrived at a two-story hair salon.
"You two go find somewhere to have tea. Come back in two or three hours." The boss's wife handed over two hundred dollars.
"Thanks. Big-Eyed Hua, you go have tea. I'll go inside with her." Gu Sheng tossed the two hundred dollars to Big-Eyed Hua and followed her into the salon.
As they climbed the stairs to the second floor, Gu Sheng quickly put a hand around her waist. "Careful. These stairs are steep."
"Look at you!" Her voice had softened considerably.
They reached the second floor and went straight into a private room.
That face really puts all those future plastic-surgery faces to shame. She could even enter Miss Hong Kong.
"All you do is smoke, smoke, smoke!" She snatched his cigarette and threw it onto the floor.
"You're going to police my smoking too, boss's wife?"
"So now you remember I'm the boss's wife?"
"Of course. This is the only time a man gets to stand firm!" Gu Sheng chuckled.
"Ah Sin suspects me..." she said suddenly.
"What?" Gu Sheng snapped his gaze toward her.
"I said, Ah Sin suspects me." Her voice grew louder.
"Then why the fuck did you still come out to get your hair done?" Gu Sheng cursed angrily.
If his boss found out about this, both of them would end up at the bottom of the sea.
"I can't live with him anymore. Last time he beat me so badly I couldn't leave the house for days. Think of something. How about we run away together?" She turned her face, revealing a little bruising along one side.
Gu Sheng had noticed it earlier, but who had time to care about that then?
Besides, she wasn't his wife.
"Run, run, run. Run where?" Gu Sheng cursed. How the fuck could running away be that easy?
Did she think everyone in Hongxing was dead? They'd barely reach the airport before someone dumped them in the sea.
"I don't care. You're the man. You figure it out. Worst case, they throw us both into the sea." She wrapped her arms around him.
Gu Sheng really wanted to kick her off him. How had he ended up in this mess?
He pulled up his trousers and walked out with a cigarette between his lips. "Go downstairs and get your hair done. Let me think."
He found a sofa and sat down. The more he thought about it, the more he felt his boss was a real fucking bastard.
I work for you for barely over a thousand a month.
What kind of boss are you?
Fucking prick!
A moment later, the boss's wife swayed her way downstairs to get her hair done, and Gu Sheng drew his gaze back.
Do I have a cheat? This would be easier if I had one! As Gu Sheng was pondering that, a wheel covered entirely in question marks appeared in his mind.
"Oh, hey, I really do!" Gu Sheng immediately grinned.
A moment later, he cursed in fury again.
"I don't even have three hundred dollars in my pockets, and one pull on the lowest tier costs ten thousand? Are you fucking kidding me? This really is Penguin Daddy's loving care, huh? There's no Windows, no smartphones, but they've already brought out pay-to-win?"
"Ten pulls only guarantee one two-star?"
"What the hell is this? Fucking scummy!"
There was only one wheel in Gu Sheng's mind, and only its lowest tier was currently unlocked. Each pull cost ten thousand dollars.
After a hundred pulls, he could unlock the second-tier wheel.
That was a fucking million dollars. A million dollars in 1982!
