Background / History
Qin Manjiang grew up in a farming family beside the river in Lower River Village. He was adopted by Qin Linghan, whom he calls Old Qin, and Chen Xiuzhi. He had already deduced that he was adopted before Xi Wutong confirmed it: Old Qin’s story about the village chief naming him contradicted the chief’s death date, and Qin Manjiang increasingly resembled neither Old Qin nor Qin Manyi. He considers the lack of a blood relationship irrelevant to their being his family 1 13.
His childhood account of Chen Xiuzhi’s death was that she had suffered severe bleeding while giving birth to Qin Manyi. Xi Wutong later tells him that both adoptive parents died like other victims in Lower River Village: they walked into the river and drowned. Old Qin’s death occurred shortly after Qin Manjiang secured admission to Fucheng University, making the apparent suicide difficult for him to accept 1 13.
After witnessing Old Qin’s death, Qin Manyi developed serious psychiatric symptoms. Qin Manjiang moved out of his university dormitory to care for her rather than immediately placing her in a psychiatric hospital. Her later loss of consciousness and expensive treatment led him to miss classes and urgently seek money. Li Xijiu covered almost all of her initial medical costs 1.
Appearance
Qin Manjiang has distinct, well-defined features, long and narrow eyes, and somewhat overgrown hair. Li Xijiu compares his appearance to a refined-looking screen villain 2.
- Silver half-rim glasses: A gift from Li Xijiu before the university entrance examination 1 2.
- Mild expression, unsettling impression: Despite not being exceptionally handsome or outwardly aggressive, he can give others the impression that he is “sharpening a knife behind their backs” 2.
- Uncanny resemblance: Chen Ping says he looks almost identical to a young professor pictured at his former university—a man who had been dead for twenty years. No connection is established 18.
Personality
Qin Manjiang initially wants a steady, ordinary life rather than adventure. He is practical about work and money, apologizes when canceling a part-time shift, and later offers his unused room for rent. He nevertheless lets Mi Qiao stay when she cannot pay the full rent, without pressing her about the secrets he suspects she keeps 2 39 49 50.
His restrained manner can appear cold. He questions a grieving mother until Liu Jingqing asks him to stop, exploits villagers’ guilty consciences, and threatens Chen Rui when the latter grabs his collar. Yet he refuses to abandon companions in danger: he carries the wounded Li Xijiu through the burning cinema and later rescues Liu Jingqing rather than escaping alone 8 22 25 28.
He increasingly doubts the authenticity of his outward emotions. Expressions of fear and grief sometimes appear because they seem appropriate to the situation, not because they match what he feels. By the time his glasses are returned, he recognizes a longstanding unfamiliarity with his own reflected face and a separation between his inner emotions and facial expressions 23 49.
He values personal bonds over ancestry or imposed obligations. He explicitly identifies Qin Linghan as his father when Doctor invokes his biological father’s final request. He accepts the inherited case only because it may help explain his adoptive parents’ deaths, and refuses to follow the biological father’s plans unquestioningly 43 46.
Abilities & Skills
Observation and Ghost-Rule Deduction
Qin Manjiang survives by identifying supernatural conditions and testing explanations against what he sees.
- Recognizes the significance of the cinema ghosts’ matching father-and-son clothing and interrupts the Tall Wraith’s attack by tearing its outfit 5.
- Reconstructs the cinema floor plan and uses a work log to locate the abandoned Theater 3, which the pursuing ghost cannot enter 6.
- Identifies blinking after eye contact as the Sheep Ghost’s movement trigger; holding his gaze steady temporarily prevents it from approaching 22.
- Distinguishes the ghost’s Silent Domain from a general suppression of everyone else’s senses, then recommends traveling in pairs or groups 23.
- Deduces that reflective surfaces provide another route for the Sheep Immortal’s attacks 25 26.
- His deductions are fallible: following Wang Ju to the Village Chief’s residence leads into a trap because the controlling brush has already been removed 31.
Bluffing and Psychological Pressure
He uses incomplete information and implied threats to make frightened people disclose what they know.
- Falsely claims that wounds form the character for “Wang” to stop Wang Ju from removing a corpse and obtain testimony 25.
- Suggests that Chen Shixing’s wounds form “Chen,” then lets the younger Chen relatives infer that he has specialist knowledge 26.
- Warns Chen Rui that he could exclude him from an escape plan—or persuade the others to kill him—if he continues demanding help by force 28.
Crisis Coordination
Qin Manjiang assigns tasks around each companion’s circumstances rather than trying to keep everyone together.
- Directs He Jian to draw away Chen Ping, Zhong Xueran to lead away the Black Sheep, and Liu Jingqing to break the Silent Domain with the writing brush 34.
- Sends He Jian a prepared message when Chen Ping appears before him, redirecting him to the Chen Family’s house 36 37.
- Refuses to make a wish merely because Chen Ping demands one, recognizing that eligibility and payment are central to the ritual 37.
Exploiting the Wish System
His decisive victory over the Immortal Sheep comes from forcing a demonstrable failure rather than defeating it physically.
- Wishes that a particular hair will not break for the next second, then immediately snaps it 38.
- The failed wish brings the Ghost Story Game’s spiraling eye, which destroys the Immortal Sheep 38.
- The destruction is performed by the Game, not by an established combat power of Qin Manjiang’s 38.
Physical Limits and Unexplained Behavior
- Limited stamina: He struggles to keep pace with Li Xijiu and becomes severely exhausted while carrying him through the fire 6 8.
- Post-game recovery: His fire injuries disappear after the cinema incident, but physical and mental exhaustion remain. The mechanism is not explained 11.
- Mechanical responses: After hearing about his resemblance to the dead professor, his posture, blinking, drinking, and swallowing briefly become unnaturally rigid and rhythmic 18.
- Standardized habits: He later reflects on the unnatural regularity of his own behavior; no confirmed cause is given 49.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Game phone: Hosts the Ghost Story Game, its messages, player profile, Spirit Pupils, and item interface. Attempting to disclose the Game causes intense pain and a warning of elimination 13 39.
- High-powered flashlight: Prepared for the cinema rescue and later used to make the approaching Sheep Ghost vanish 2 22.
- Wrench: Brought to the cinema and handed to Li Xijiu, who uses it against the Tall Wraith’s blade 2 5.
- Other rescue supplies: A hammer, pepper spray, a cross, garlic, a Guanyin pendant, and a jade Buddha. He brings both practical tools and religious objects without knowing which might work 2.
- Silver half-rim glasses: Lost during the cinema fire and returned by Yang, who says the ghost left them behind 10 49.
- Inherited white metal case: Opens at his touch. According to Doctor, opening it emits a signal that exposes his presence somewhere in Fu City to people seeking its contents 43.
- Inherited phone and letters: The case contains an ordinary-looking phone and his biological father’s letter discussing the Game and a door he could not open. Qin Manjiang rejects the expectation that he should continue the man’s investigation 43 46.
- Longevity lock pendant: Found beneath the inherited phone with a note signed “Mom,” wishing him a safe life 43.
Relationships
- Li Xijiu — Childhood friend and financial supporter of Qin Manyi’s treatment. Repeatedly saves Qin Manjiang in the cinema before becoming a vengeful ghost. Qin Manjiang continues searching for him rather than accepting that he is entirely gone 1 6 9 47 49.
- Qin Manyi — Younger adoptive sister. Their everyday relationship is distant, but he takes responsibility for her care. He believes the girl who awakens in the hospital is not the sister he remembers; she privately warns him not to trust other players 1 12 15.
- Qin Linghan / Old Qin — Adoptive father. His unexplained drowning remains one of Qin Manjiang’s principal reasons for investigating the supernatural 1 43 49.
- Chen Xiuzhi — Adoptive mother. Xi Wutong’s disclosure overturns the account of her dying in childbirth and links her death to the village’s drownings 13.
- Biological parents — Unnamed. His father was a Game player; his mother left the longevity lock. Doctor claims they were killed, but Qin Manjiang distrusts the circumstances and purpose of the inheritance 43 46.
- Xi Wutong — Doctor and police-retained specialist. Shares information about his adoption and Lower River Village, and asks him to contact her before investigating there 12 13 14.
- Liu Jingqing / Pond Fish — Sick Sheep teammate whom he rescues and investigates alongside. His refusal to abandon her gives her a strong sense of security 22 26 34.
- Zhong Xueran / So Annoying — Fellow player who saves him and Liu Jingqing with the Three Pure Ones Bell. Later brings him into the investigation at Guanyin Lake 31 32 47.
- Shi Lianshan / Boss Shi — Veteran teammate who gives him a ride and explains multiplayer dangers and Game mechanics 17 18 19.
- He Jian / Knife-and-Brush Clerk — Sick Sheep teammate. Hesitates over whether to trust Qin Manjiang’s message, but ultimately reaches the Chen Family’s house 34 36 37.
- Doctor — Mysterious acquaintance of his biological father who delivers the inheritance and arranges protection. Qin Manjiang rejects further involvement and deletes his number 43 46.
- Lin — Young man sent by Doctor to protect him under the pretext of renting a room. Leaves when Qin Manjiang insists on handling matters himself 42 43 46.
- Mi Qiao — Tenant admitted despite insufficient rent money. Temporarily stays rent-free and volunteers to prepare meals; she lives with her little yellow dog, Xiaobai 49 50.
- Class representative — Helps look after Qin Manyi during the cinema rescue and informs him when she awakens. He later avoids involving her further because he fears endangering people close to him 2 10 42.

Trivia
- Old Qin’s naming story derives from a poem describing a river half emerald and half red. He first considered Qin Quanjiang, meaning “whole river,” before settling on Qin Manjiang, meaning “full river.” Qin Manjiang later discovers inconsistencies in the story 1 13.
- Receiving no Spirit Pupils for the Beginner Level becomes a clue in his belief that Li Xijiu may still exist in some form 18 47.
- He dislikes mirrors from childhood, initially attributing it to his appearance. He later concludes that his own face has always felt faintly unfamiliar 49.
