Identity and Green Vine
- Chen Ping and Green Vine are different people. The player introduces himself as “Chen Ping,” but Qin Manjiang later explicitly identifies that name as not being his real name 17 37.
- Their appearances differ. Qin Manjiang and Liu Jingqing do not recognize the village’s Chen Ping when he is unveiled at the festival, despite having travelled with the player using his name 28.
- The Evil Curse Pendant connects them. Green Vine uses the single-use item to share Chen Ping’s body and soul while gathering information. Chen Ping is killed during that possession 33.
- The connection persists after death. When the pendant expires, Green Vine’s soul returns to his own body, but he is already dead and confused about his identity. Their entangled souls give Green Vine the impulse to demand wishes 33 37.
- They appear separately near the end of the incident. The real Chen Ping conducts Zhong Xueran’s drawing inside the Chen residence while Green Vine’s ghost approaches from outside 37.
Background / History
His mother’s wish
Chen Ping grew up in Xianyang Village and was one of its few young people to leave the mountains for university. As a child, he was unruly and uninterested in studying. After his mother was selected as the festival’s Sheep Immortal and wished for his university admission, he unexpectedly became successful at school and entered a prestigious university. His mother died after his admission, leading him to suspect that the wish had demanded her life as payment 16.
Investigating the festival
Chen Ping took leave from university to return for the Sheep Transformation Festival. His education had made him question customs he had previously accepted. While outwardly joining the festivities, he searched for a way into the guarded Immortal Sheep Ancestral Hall 16.
Following the village chief’s son, he discovered a concealed hole in the wall and watched Li Rong’s preparation through a window. He witnessed the villagers inscribe her body, drive nailed black sheep horns into her temples, and strip away her skin as part of the transformation. Horrified, he feared that his mother had suffered the same treatment and resolved to escape and contact the police. A noise from the window alerted the villagers and briefly dislodged the brush controlling Li Rong; the chief ordered a search for the intruder 16.
Becoming the replacement Immortal Sheep
After Li Rong disappeared, Chen Ping was killed and made into the next Immortal Sheep. Green Vine was possessing him at the time, entangling their deaths and identities. At the festival, villagers recognized Chen Ping and remarked that his mother had previously held the same role. His drawing was interrupted when the village chief’s corpse fell onto the platform 28 33.
Final wishes and disappearance
Zhong Xueran later found Chen Ping at the Chen family residence and presented a single slip bearing her name. He drew it, named her as the selected person, and invited her wish. She asked that nothing in Xianyang Village be able to harm outsiders; the pursuing ghosts stopped attacking her, but Chen Ping began transforming into an enormous humanoid black sheep 37 38.
Meanwhile, Liu Jingqing became an Immortal Sheep herself and wished for Li Rong to have her wish. Li Rong seized both Chen Ping and Green Vine, wrapped them in numerous arms, and dragged them into a fissure that closed behind them 38.
Appearance
- As the festival’s Immortal Sheep: Has closed eyes and upturned lips when Zhong Xueran finds him in the Chen residence. His face is unfamiliar to the visiting players but recognizable to villagers 28 37.
- During transformation: His muscles bulge and twist, his skin turns crimson, and prominent veins appear before black wool covers him 38.
- Black sheep form: Retains a humanoid shape, with elongated slit pupils and overlapping teeth. He grows almost tall enough to break through the room’s roof 38.
- Not Green Vine’s appearance: The thin, bespectacled young man introduced as “Chen Ping” belongs to the player identity, not the village resident 17 28 37.
Personality
Chen Ping is restless and quick to act, but his curiosity is tempered by fear. He follows the chief’s son into the ancestral grounds despite his unease, then trembles while imagining frightening possibilities. Witnessing Li Rong’s torture moves him beyond suspicion: he wants the authorities to shut down the ritual, rather than merely uncover its secret 16.
His investigation is rooted in concern for his mother. He questions whether his academic success was purchased through her death and, after witnessing the ritual, fears that she endured the same violence 16.
Abilities & Skills
Ritual Selection and Wish-Granting
As the newest Immortal Sheep, Chen Ping can choose the person entitled to make a wish 37 38.
- Selects Zhong Xueran by drawing and reading the only name slip she offers 37.
- Accepts her wish to prevent harm to outsiders; the ghosts immediately stop attacking her 38.
- Operates within a ritual that normally grants wishing rights only to the Immortal Sheep vessel and the person that vessel selects 36 37.
- Wish fulfillment carries a price; Zhong Xueran’s successful wish does not prevent his subsequent transformation 38.
Black Sheep Transformation
- Changes from a human vessel into a towering humanoid black sheep after granting Zhong Xueran’s wish 38.
- The transformation visibly alters his skin, wool, pupils, teeth, and size 38.
Shared-Soul Connection
- His death during Green Vine’s possession leaves their souls inextricably linked 33 37.
- Green Vine inherits a subconscious urge to solicit wishes through this connection 37.
- The Silent Domain belongs to the original Immortal Sheep, not to Chen Ping or Green Vine’s ghost 35.
Relationships
- Mother — Former Sheep Immortal who wished for his university admission. Her later death motivates his investigation of the festival 16.
- Li Rong — Her forced transformation reveals the ritual’s brutality to him. He becomes her replacement, and she ultimately drags him into a fissure 16 33 38.
- Green Vine — Player who possesses him through the Evil Curse Pendant. Their shared death entangles their souls, but they remain distinct figures 33 37.
- Zhong Xueran — Engineers her selection by presenting a single name slip; Chen Ping grants her protective wish 37 38.
- Liu Jingqing — Becomes another Immortal Sheep and makes the wish that enables Li Rong’s final intervention against Chen Ping and Green Vine 38.
