Background / History
Life Before the Game
Liu Jingqing grew up in a loving, harmonious environment and enjoyed supportive relationships with her family, friends, and readers. She wrote gentle everyday stories and sweet romances rather than plots built around scheming or tragedy. One of her novels had recently received a television adaptation by the time she joined the Xianyang Village expedition 17 26 35.
Before Sick Sheep, she had survived two ghost stories. In one, Chief Player Yang led everyone to a successful clear. In the other, Roast Duck discovered a ghost’s weakness and destroyed it through the rules just as it was about to drag her beneath a bed. She attributed both escapes to luck and other players’ help rather than her own abilities 35.
Arrival in Xianyang Village
Liu Jingqing introduced herself to the assembled players as Pond Fish. Although she arrived in a luxury car, it could not handle the road to Xianyang Village, so Shi Lianshan offered her a seat in his SUV 17.
During the first night, she asked Qin Manjiang to accompany her to the bathroom and speak from outside the door to reassure her. There, she interpreted Sick Sheep’s opening lines as a description of villagers transforming a human into a god, rather than processing an actual sheep. She also proposed that the ghost could move only in darkness 21.
Her explanation coincided with the Sheep Ghost’s appearance. Cut off from outside sounds, she continued reasoning aloud while Qin confronted it. He broke open the bathroom door, covered her eyes, and brought her back to the living room. Following his instructions, she retrieved his high-powered flashlight, allowing him to drive the ghost away. The group subsequently identified her spoken interpretation as a likely summoning trigger 22 23.
Investigating the Festival
The next morning, Liu Jingqing stayed behind so Qin would not wake alone and prepared instant noodles from the players’ own supplies. The two then investigated the village together, learning that six wealthy families had benefited from wishes granted during the Sheep Transformation Festival 24.
They witnessed the aftermath of Zhang Yang’s and Mr. Chen’s deaths and helped draw information out of the Chen family’s younger members. Chen Rui revealed that villagers had restrained Li Rong, attached sheep horns to her head, and dressed her in sheepskin. Liu Jingqing openly condemned the ritual as a crime 25 26 28.
Seeking a means of controlling the Immortal Sheep, she and Qin followed Wang Ju into the village chief’s residence. Li Rong’s ghost killed Wang Ju and trapped them inside, but Zhong Xueran rescued both with her Three Pure Ones Bell. Zhong then revealed that she had already stolen the controlling Writing Brush 29 31 32.
Breaking the Silent Domain
When the survivors were pursued by black goats bearing Li Rong’s head, Qin assigned Liu Jingqing the Writing Brush and the task of breaking the Immortal Sheep’s Silent Domain. Initially overwhelmed by fear and the possibility that everyone might die because of her failure, she steadied herself by trusting his judgment 34 35.
She connected the brush’s mark to the mark between Li Rong’s eyebrows. With a brief hint from Qin that the target might be inanimate, she reexamined the opening lines and identified the Ancestral Hall as the Immortal Sheep’s manifested body. At its entrance, she bit her finger, soaked the brush tip in blood, and pressed it onto the threshold. The return of birdsong and insect sounds confirmed that the Silent Domain had broken 35 36.
Her Wish and Survival
The brush then showed Liu Jingqing images of Li Rong’s transformation. Understanding the ritual, she entered the hall and performed it on herself to obtain a wish. Despite severe pain and the Immortal Sheep’s consciousness threatening to overwhelm her, she wished that Li Rong could have her own wish fulfilled 36 37 38.
Liu Jingqing collapsed unconscious in a pool of blood. Her wish prompted Li Rong to attack Chen Ping and Green Vine and drag them into a fissure; Liu heard an unfamiliar woman’s faint “Thank you.” Qin subsequently defeated the underlying Immortal Sheep, clearing Sick Sheep 38.
The survivors found Liu Jingqing near death in the Ancestral Hall. Zhong drove her to Fu City for treatment by Doctor rather than taking her to a hospital. Her surgery succeeded, though her injuries had come dangerously close to major arteries 39.
Appearance
- Arrives wearing oversized sunglasses and driving a luxury car, creating an outwardly confident “boss-lady” impression that contrasts with her hesitant manner 17.
- Is approximately half a head shorter than Qin Manjiang 22.
- Has poor stamina after years of working at a computer; even before becoming a novelist, she struggled with an eight-hundred-meter school run 34 36.
Personality
Liu Jingqing is soft-spoken, timid, and easily frightened. She seeks reassurance from other players and initially doubts her ability to carry out critical tasks. Nevertheless, she follows Qin’s instructions during the bathroom escape without distracting him with unnecessary questions, and later forces herself to think through the Silent Domain despite panic 17 21 22 35.
Her kindness extends beyond her companions. She asks Qin to stop questioning Zhang Yang’s grieving mother, hesitates to assume the worst of Xiao Ran, and struggles with the implications of Zhong’s theft leaving the village chief unprotected. That same compassion ultimately drives her to use her wish for Li Rong rather than for herself, without calculating its benefit or cost 25 26 32 38.
Abilities & Skills
Textual Analysis
Her strongest demonstrated skill is interpreting the Ghost Story Game’s opening lines through an author’s perspective 21 23.
- Recognizes descriptions of horns, bone-shaving, and skinning as a human transformation ritual 21.
- Connects the “dark, narrow hole” to the Ancestral Hall’s circular entrance 24 35.
- Understands “I... don’t want to become a god” as Li Rong’s plea for help and uses it to guide her final wish 38.
- Her explanation also creates danger: speaking it aloud can summon the Sheep Ghost. Qin later deliberately repeats it to escape Chen Ping’s forced wish 23 37.
Writing Brush Use
Liu Jingqing learns to apply the village’s controlling brush by studying the mark left on Li Rong 35.
- Uses her own blood as the brush’s liquid and marks the Ancestral Hall’s threshold to dispel the Silent Domain 36.
- Receives images of Li Rong’s ritual transformation through the brush 36.
- Marks her own forehead to perceive the black horns and sheepskin needed to become another vessel 37.
Ritual Wish
Becoming an Immortal Sheep vessel grants Liu Jingqing the right to make a wish 37 38.
- Uses that right to request fulfillment of Li Rong’s wish 38.
- The ritual causes extreme pain, loss of consciousness, and life-threatening injuries; it is not shown as a safe or lasting power upgrade 37 38 39.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Writing Brush — Taken from the village chief’s residence by Zhong Xueran and assigned to Liu during the escape plan. Used to break the Silent Domain and perform the vessel ritual 32 34 36 37.
- Black sheepskin and horns — Ritual materials she puts on in the Ancestral Hall. The skin clings to her body, while iron nails at the horns’ ends pierce her temples 37.
- Mobile phone — Uses it to seek Qin’s help when she understands the brush’s application but cannot locate the Immortal Sheep 35.
Relationships
- Qin Manjiang — Investigative partner and rescuer. His refusal to abandon her gives her a strong sense of security; his confidence in her textual analysis helps her overcome self-doubt 22 24 35.
- Zhong Xueran / So Annoying — Fellow survivor who teleports her out of Li Rong’s trap, supports her during the chase, and arranges her medical treatment 31 34 39.
- Li Rong — Ritual victim whose suffering Liu recognizes in the opening lines. Liu sacrifices her own safety to make a wish on her behalf 28 36 38.
- Yang — Chief Player who led Liu and the other participants through an earlier ghost story 35.
- Roast Duck — Saved Liu in another game by finding and exploiting a ghost’s weakness 35.
- Shi Lianshan — Recognizes her work as Pond Fish and offers her transport to Xianyang Village 17.
